Presentation of GOM Atos 5/5X 3D scanners at Top 3D Expo / Sudo Null IT News
Presentation by Sergey Morgun from OIM at Top 3D Expo, talking about new generation GOM ATOS scanners and a specially created educational complex for teaching how to work with 3D scanning systems in industry.
Video
Performance
The company Optical Measuring Machines represents GOM in Russia and the CIS: optical scanners of this company, called Atos, systems for analyzing dynamic deformations and displacements Aramis, equipment that is used to analyze the formability and formability of materials.
The presentation is divided into two parts: the first is dedicated to the novelty, a completely new generation of scanners, and the second is a complete solution for educational institutions.
Modern metrology is not about tactile machines, but the transition to optical 3D scanners. They completely replace the previous generation equipped with probe sensors, are innovative, precision accurate, and provide a qualitatively new approach to measuring the geometry of objects, as well as quality control in production at all stages - from the beginning of product development, to quality control of finished parts and diagnostics in during operation.
The new equipment incorporates all the unique developments of GOM: this is the Triple Scan projection principle, a stereo camera system, precision accurate calibration, built-in self-diagnosis, the measurement process of tracking an object in space during measurement, as well as electronic layout and projection functions, interchangeable measuring volumes, the use of photogrammetry in work - for measuring large objects of the order of 10-20 meters or more, a combination of contact and non-contact methods - the use of a probe together with an optical measuring machine, as well as the possibility of using it both in manual and automated mode.
So, we present you the fifth generation of Atos scanners: they are called ATOS 5 and 5x.
ATOS 5 and 5x

Features ATOS 5X
ATOS 5X is designed for automated control of car body geometry. The device allows you to do wide-angle scanning at maximum speed automatically. Together with ATOS, the ScanBox is the ideal tool for car manufacturers and bodyshops.
These are completely refurbished systems with certain innovations in both hardware and software that have a great effect on the work of the whole production.
These systems now offer even faster scanning, use a blue equalizer for precise data acquisition, can scan larger areas with the same detail as before, use fiber optic data cables, provide reliable measurement accuracy, and are used as metrology equipment by workers of any qualifications.
Now it takes only 0.2 seconds for one scan, that is, moving the scanner or changing the position of the scanned object is much longer than the measurement process itself.
Scanning process
The system projects more light onto the object, which allows you to scan faster than 100 frames per second.
The equipment can scan black and shiny objects, including glossy ones. The blue equalizer allows you to get data of even higher quality, with its help you can get objects with complex geometry in detail: small radii, edges - get them with completely low noise and accurately cover this geometry, convert it into a three-dimensional view.
Now it's all one and a half times brighter and faster. The illustration shows a blade scan with full edge capture.
The laser light compressor, which uses an ultra-bright light source, also improves data quality. The Atos 5x modification uses a laser diode with an equalizer and a specialized projector. This system allows you to produce 8 times more light than similar existing systems, and allows you to quickly scan with fields up to one meter - with the same detail as before, you will receive much larger areas of objects, which means much faster to scan them.
Now it will take 2.5-3 times less time to scan a car body. The use of a fiber optic line for data transmission also contributes to the acceleration of the measurement process. Optics allows you to make the cables longer and use the scanner at a distance from the computer itself.
Reliability and accuracy are also ensured by the design of the sensor itself - now it is a housing protected from external influences such as dust and splashes, protected optics, a separately assembled sealed unit for electronics with external cooling.
All components now have industrial waterproof and dustproof connectors.
The system also recognizes a change in the field of view, that is, as soon as you change lenses, the system automatically recognizes everything. There is a built-in active temperature control of the sensor.
Atos combines high-speed scanning, blue equalizer, laser light compressor, high-precision scanning of large areas, optical fiber for data transmission and reliability for industrial applications.
Educational solution
We have decided that it is necessary to create a common set for universities, schools and technical schools, which would allow educational institutions to receive not only equipment of high quality and a high technological level, but also allow them to train people to work with this equipment. After all, each student, in the future, is a specialist, employee, manager at an enterprise where such technologies can be used.
Having knowledge of 3D scanning, working on CNC machines, reverse engineering, it is much easier to include their workflow later.
We took the industrial scanner Atos Core as a basis and formed a solution for education on its basis, and called it: Atos For Education.
This is a kit that allows you to train people for direct work in production.
It is a set for theoretical and practical training in schools, colleges and universities, contains industrial software and hardware, lecture and methodological materials for teaching and practical classes.
Includes: fixed field of view scanner, tripod, stage, training demo, computer with scanning and inspection software.
Industrial Scanner Software delivers high-level data immediately, ready for reverse engineering and industrial applications, for inspection, for quality control in manufacturing environments.
The kit includes lecture materials with full reference information in Russian, the software interface is also in Russian.
Support from our specialists is also provided: on working with software, operation and maintenance of the scanner, practical courses on teaching.
The program includes educational materials, the course consists of several modules: this is an introduction to optical metrology, preparation of objects for measurements, control of the geometry of objects, reporting.
All material is supplemented with video lessons and recommendations for the teacher. On the basis of this module, you can create additional specialized modules for training by industry.
The base module included is a 3D scanning module for reverse engineering and rapid prototyping. It contains a library of pre-made high quality 3D scans. You can make scans directly with the scanner itself, with this set of equipment, adapt the course in this way to your specifics.
The module also includes mesh processing, export for reverse engineering and rapid prototyping.
The next module is scanning for inspection.
It also contains all the necessary presentations, ways to match with a mathematical model, easy alignment of scanned data, form and position tolerance analysis, section control, and report generation and export of these reports.
We also looked at areas where this kit can be applied: universities and any educational institutions that train specialists for the automotive industry, aerospace, energy and consumer goods, as well as any industries where digital production tools are used.
As an addition to this kit, we also offer software that allows you to analyze deformations, movements of objects, nodes and components in dynamics, it uses the same hardware - Atos sensor, which will be used as a dynamic optical non-contact machine for deformation analysis.
The kit also includes, along with the software, a set of manuals for laboratory work, lecture material and video tutorials.
We also offer a simple free set for educational institutions, which can be downloaded from our website.
It contains free lecture courses with detailed background information on scanning, component materials testing, as well as GOM Inspect and GOM Correlate software for linear angle geometry inspection and component deformation and displacement analysis.
Upon request, in exchange for your contacts, we will send you this information, which can be used for teaching students and schoolchildren.

3D printed glasses - 3D printed smart glasses Vue glasses: practicality and functionality
Smart glasses on a 3D printer
the concept is still attractive. It is not surprising that this encourages various electronics manufacturers to experiment on their own, about which, by the way, little has been heard recently. But recently, a developer named Jason Guay has rekindled public interest in the subject of 3D printed smart glasses by making a name for himself with a very interesting project in the field. Jason's team is working on a feature rich gadget called Vue. As you may have guessed, this name hides the 3D printing of glasses, which we will talk about today.
The key feature of Vue glasses is their practicality - the device is designed for everyday use, and the design of the glasses allows this to be done. By their appearance, you can’t tell that you have a technological device in front of you, since all the functional components are built into the frame and lenses. This was made possible thanks to 3D printing technology, which is the main production tool in this project. The convenient touch interface of the glasses makes their management simple and natural, and the number of functions allows us to call this device very practical and useful.
3D printed smart glasses
3D printed smart glasses will give users the ability to answer calls, listen to music, view notifications and more. In addition, the device has a high-quality fitness tracker function, and a special mobile application provides the ability to search for the device in case you forgot where you left it. By the way, Jason Guey himself can tell a lot about the practicality of the device - he is not only a developer, but also the main tester of an innovative product. The 3D printed prototype glasses of Vue complement almost any of his looks, and few can guess the true purpose of ordinary-looking glasses.
This naturalness instantly captivated those interested in the project, allowing the smart glasses Kickstarter campaign to raise almost eight times the amount required. Of course, such success should not be attributed solely to the design of glasses printed on a 3D printer, since their functionality is also kept up to date. That is worth one wireless audio system based on bone conduction of sound, a noise-cancelling microphone, a pedometer and a system of tactile sensors for instant notifications. As for personalization, in addition to a set of standard models, the developers intend to implement a custom-made service. Thus, any idea of the client will be framed in an individual pair using 3D printing.
What is interesting about 3D printing glasses
Smart 3D printing glasses can be made with prescription lenses, sun glasses and more. Vue glasses can really become part of your everyday life. All of the above is just the basic functionality of the device. The developers plan to significantly optimize the device and equip it with a lot of useful options. So, the next addition will be an open application programming interface to host a huge number of programs and add-ons. As for the battery charge of the glasses, it lasts for about a week. A wireless charging system will save users from fussing with wires. On top of that, as soon as you remove your glasses, the device will go into low power mode on its own.
The concept of Vue 3D printed smart glasses is definitely something to look forward to.
