Materials
Nylon 12 [Versatile Plastic]
Nylon 12 [Versatile Plastic] is a durable nylon plastic that can be used for a wide range of applications, both for prototyping and for end products. Printed using Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) 3D printing services, when thin, it's flexible enough for hinges and springs and when thick, strong enough for structural components. Learn More
Accura 60
Accura 60 is a translucent and rigid acrylate-based plastic. Shapeways 3D prints this material using a large-format Stereolithography (SLA) printer capable of producing small to large parts with high resolution and detail as well as smooth surfaces with limited layer lines. Learn More
Stainless Steel 316L
Stainless Steel 316L is manufactured using ExOne’s ‘Triple Advanced Compaction Technology’ with Binder Jetting. Unlike our Steel that is infused with bronze, this material is a single alloy, composed of pure Stainless Steel. Learn More

Testimonials
I like the ease of use in the Shapeways platform, being able to 3D print on-demand orders for the first time, and most of all–being able to scale my business. In the beginning years ago I basically had the change in my pocket and a credit line at my bank so I couldn’t order a ton of things, and you never know what’s going to sell.”

Owner | Voytek Medical
During the process, we used Shapeways capabilities to 3D print many prototypes. That meant we had the option to iterate very quickly, print objects, and test them to see if they were working correctly in terms of complexity, or too much complexity. ”

Shapeways was really great when we worked together before, which led us to reach out again. It’s been so helpful to talk with them about what we could do in every aspect of 3D printing and finishing, and it saved us a lot of time in experimentation.”

Shapeways - Amazon 3d Printing
Everyone in the 3D industry should have heard of the Shapeways website. Shapeways is the largest 3D marketplace in the world. Recently, CEO Peter Veijmarschosen was interviewed by e-commerce magazine EMERCE. I have selected the most interesting facts from this interview.
8 years have passed since the founding of the company. Shapeways was originally a small division of Philips in the Netherlands. The company opened its New York headquarters in 2012, employs about 150 professionals, and has raised $48.5 million in investment over the past few years.
But 2014 was so successful that Peter said that they had passed the tipping point and now they are no longer just a start-up, but a truly successful company. And there are good reasons for such a statement, in 2014 their monthly print volume (their own print service and community capacity) doubled compared to 2013 to 181,000 objects. The number of stores on the service has grown to 23,000.
Anyone can open a store with us, and in the long term, the number of stores can increase to 100,000. In this sense, we are Amazon for 3D printing.
For every object printed and sold through Shapeways, the company receives a good commission. The amount of the commission depends on the material, size and complexity of the object. The margin can vary from a few percent up to 20%. And although the project may change over time, it is assumed that the main monetization will be through a commission.
But now all the profits are reinvested in the business, so profits are still low. We are satisfied with where we are now, although we would like to be a little further. Building a new market takes time. And it's not just about software, printing and post-processing. We must not forget about things like the supply chain, delivery, customer acquisition. Nobody has done it before us. But we are on the right track.
We can say that we are where the Internet was decades ago, we are on the verge of a big bang. The attention surrounding 3D printers is growing at a gigantic pace,as is the number of objects printed in our country. All this suggests that we are only a few years away from really major changes.
Most of our clients are designers, architects and early adopters of 3D technology. The mainstream consumer does not yet fully understand what 3D printing is and what benefits it provides. But it's just a matter of time. Many consumers still think that 3D printing is only plastic, while we already print with more than 50 materials, including gold, silver, and ceramics. And we can offer dozens of different post-processing methods.
In addition, Peter identified several other barriers to the mass consumer. The industry needs to focus on quality, variety and price. The truth is that our products, other than jewelry, are still slightly worse than mass-produced goods.
The prices are way too high, when you have to choose between a $18 3D printed phone case or a $1 factory made phone case in China, the result is obvious. We have already noticed that lowering our commission on some product groups does wonders for sales. And what will happen when we can achieve a significant cost reduction.
Peter says that this can be achieved by increased competition between manufacturers and better agreements with material suppliers.
Shapeways is passionate about new printers and printing technologies. Peter believes that printing costs will be halved in the near future.
But despite this optimism, Peter doesn't believe in a big future for home printing. He believes that this market will grow significantly, but will not be very massive.
We already have over 200,000 customers, more than home printers sold. All these machines are either too simple, or it takes 'years' to print something of normal size on them, and users will have to do the post-processing themselves.
In the future, the company plans to take many actions to maintain its leadership in a growing market, but, however, expansion of production is not included in their initial goals. Existing 3D printing technologies fully satisfy our customers. The 28 3D setups we currently have are not cheap to run.
Our smallest printer has a print volume like a microwave and prints about 100 objects a day, it costs 80,000 euros.
