3D Scanning on your Note10+

Have you ever wished one of your inanimate objects, like a stuffed animal, could come to life? With the 3D Scanner app on your Note10+, it's almost possible! This app lets you scan an object and create a 3D model of it. You can even interact with the model once the scan is complete.

Note: The 3D Scanner app is not available on the regular Note10.

Ready to make that physical object into a cool, digital one? It's easy with 3D Scanner and your phone.

The 3D Scanner app doesn’t come pre-installed, so you'll need to be download it first. On your Note10+, navigate to and open the Galaxy Store app. Search for and select 3D Scanner. Tap Install, and once it downloads, open the app.

Allow the different permissions, and then read the tutorial to learn how to scan something. Line up the subject with the circle and wait for it to turn green. When you’re ready, tap the Record icon. Circle around the subject, making sure it stays within the selected area. And make sure not to go too fast.

When you’ve completely circled around the subject, tap the Record icon again to end it. Now you can view your 3D model; use your finger to rotate it and get a good look at it. Then, tap Save if you are satisfied. A gif of your 3D model will be saved in Gallery!

From there, you can use the other options to have fun with your model. For example, tap the Camera icon to take a picture with your model!

Samsung has published a new app called 3D Scanner on the Galaxy Store. The 3D Scanner app takes advantage of the ToF (time-of-flight) camera on the back of the Galaxy Note 10+ (and Note 10+ 5G) to scan and create 3D models of real-world objects. The Galaxy S10 5G and Galaxy A80 also have a ToF sensor and should technically support the app, but Galaxy Note 10 owners won’t be able to use it as the smaller Note 10 doesn’t have a ToF camera at the back.

Creating 3D models of real-world objects requires one to scan the object from all directions. Those models can then be transported as a GIF file for sharing with others and can also be added to pictures and videos captured with the camera. Samsung recommends objects sized between 20-80 cubic centimetres, and we also found that you need to make sure there’s nothing else around the object that you’re trying to scan when we tested it out, or you simply end up with a scan of the object and its surroundings.

We’ll test 3D Scanner on the Galaxy Note 10+ more thoroughly later on and will tell you all about it in our review of the device. For now, if you have the Galaxy Note 10+ (or a Galaxy A80 or Galaxy S10 5G), you can grab the app from the Galaxy Store by clicking this link on your phone. After it has been installed, you will find a shortcut to the app in the app drawer. You can also access 3D Scanner from Bixby Vision –  just open the camera app, tap Bixby Vision, then switch to the apps panel.

If the app isn’t available for you via the Galaxy Store, you can download the APK file on your phone and install the app manually by navigating to the downloaded file in the My Files or other file manager app. Download the APK file here, and let us know your experience with 3D Scanner once you’ve been able to use it on the Galaxy Note 10+ (or Note 10+ 5G). Samsung Galaxy S10 fingerprint scanner cheated with 3D printed copy

An Imgur user tricked the Samsung Galaxy S10 fingerprint scanner by creating a copy of his thumb print on a 3D printer. He notes that the copy was created from a fingerprint left on a glass of wine.

The traditional method of protecting a smartphone from unauthorized access is a password. But in recent years, almost all smartphone manufacturers have begun to equip their devices with biometric scanners. Most of these devices scan a fingerprint pattern, but there are more unusual systems, for example, the iris scanner in Samsung smartphones, the infrared volumetric face scanner in Apple smartphones, or the palm vein scanner in LG smartphones. Since the fingerprint, iris and other parts of the body have dozens and hundreds of parameters that are individual for each person, manufacturers call such protection methods reliable. However, cybersecurity researchers are quick to find ways around these methods after new smartphones are announced.

The Samsung Galaxy S10 line of smartphones was introduced at the end of February 2019, and one of the differences between its older S10 and S10+ models from other smartphones is that they use an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner built into the screen for the first time. The difference between this scanner and optical scanners integrated into the screen is that it works thanks to the emitted sound waves, which allows you to create a three-dimensional model of the print, rather than its flat picture. This, according to Samsung, increases the reliability of the scanner and makes it more resistant to attacks.

Imgur user darkshark showed that this scanner can still be fooled, and in a fairly simple way. As initial data, he took the print of his thumb left on a glass of wine and taken with a smartphone. Thus, he showed that such an attack can be carried out in real, not laboratory, conditions. After taking the image, darkshark made a binary black and white version of it, and then created a 3D model based on it, reflecting the relief of the fingerprint. He printed this model on a stereolithographic 3D printer in the form of a thin transparent polymer plate.

To unlock the smartphone, it turned out to be enough just to put the plate against the scanning area and press it with your finger. The author said that he had to print three versions of the plate, because he was not immediately able to choose the desired depth of grooves on the print. It is worth noting that this is not the first Galaxy S10 biometric security method that has been bypassed in a simple way. For example, earlier the face recognition system based on the image from the camera was deceived by showing it a photo or video with the owner’s face opened on another smartphone.

In addition, researchers have previously been able to fool biometric scanners on other mobile devices. For example, the Galaxy S8's iris scanner was fooled by a photo and a contact lens, the iPhone's FaceID face scanner was bypassed with a 3D printed face model, and the Windows Hello infrared scanner was unable to distinguish a real face from a simple A4 printout.

The camera in the Galaxy Note 10+, one of the flagship models of Samsung's new phablets, has an additional ToF module. This module makes focusing faster and more accurate, allows you to take photos with background blur, and can also be used to create 3D models of various objects. Two more Samsung smartphones have the same module - Galaxy S10 5G and Galaxy A80.

A new 3D Scanner application is available for these devices, with which you can create 3D images. The app is hosted on the Galaxy Store, a content store that comes preinstalled on Samsung devices. It can also be launched through Bixby Vision, from the desktop, or from a list of all installed applications.

After installing 3D Scanner, a new option for 3D shooting appears in the camera application. To scan an object with high quality, you should place it on a uniform background and follow the instructions, taking several pictures from different angles. Samsung recommends holding the camera at a distance of 20-80 cm from the subject - this will make the 3D model look more natural. The finished model can be converted into an animated GIF format or added to the smartphone gallery, where photos and videos are stored.
