3D Printing is only available to students, faculty, and staff of Illinois State University.

What to expect when 3D Printing

  1. Find or create a 3D printable object. We recommend starting with Printables, Thingiverse and TinkerCad.
  2. Complete and Submit your 3D print job request.
    • Print requests are completed in the order in which they are received, however class-related projects will be prioritized.
    • One print request per person at a time will be processed. If you have multiple 3D objects to print you may submit additional requests after you have picked up your finished 3D print job.
  3. Wait to be notified by email that your print job is ready for pick-up. The average turn-around time for prints is two weeks.
  4. Once notified, use your University ID Card to pick up your completed print job at the Floor 2 Circulation Desk.
    • Any item not picked up within 14 days of notification will be discarded. Repeated requests that are not picked up will result in suspension of 3D printing services.
    • You may not send someone with your University ID to pick up your item without first submitting the Patron Proxy Request form.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cost?

The Student Innovation Center currently provides consumables for the initial training on each piece of equipment. After training, it’s the user’s responsibility to provide their consumables. Users are not charged for machine time, training, or consultation.

Currently, machine use is on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that you will need to provide your protective equipment including safety glasses.

What kinds of projects can I do?

You can work on personal projects, group projects, and class projects within our Makerspaces. You cannot run a business out of the shop.

Who can use the makerspaces?

The Student Innovation Center’s mission is to provide collaborative space for users from all different backgrounds and disciplines. That’s why the Makerspace is open to all Iowa State students, staff, and faculty regardless of major, department, or prior experience.

However, the Makerspace is not available to be checked out for any period by anyone. Professors are welcome to bring their classes into the shop for group training, but classes cannot be held or conducted in the space. Even if professors bring a class in, the shop will remain open for others to use.

We offer consultations! Let us know in the form below if you would like a consultation, or feel free to stop by 2222 during office hours to speak with a shop supervisor.
