How to connect a barcode scanner to a computer and an online cash register
A barcode scanner is a peripheral device for a cash register or POS system. It recognizes barcodes and transmits information to the main device. How a barcode reader works
Photo scanners read bar codes using photo detectors.
The camera photographs the label in full format. The image is recognized by the firmware. Recognition speed: up to 100 codes per minute. Photo scanners read damaged or blurry barcodes. These models are used in medium and large stores where you need to quickly serve customers.
Laser scanners direct a laser beam at the label. Inside the device there are mirrors that refract the beam into several streams. To recognize a barcode, at least one of the beams must hit the label. This beam is reflected from the surface of the label, transferring the image to the photo editor. There, the signal is recognized and converted into a binary code. Laser readers are often installed in supermarkets.
Which barcode scanner should I choose?
2D readers are required to work with marked goods. These devices read 2D codes, including Data Matrix and QR code. The devices are suitable for working with EGAIS and the Chestny ZNAK system.
How to choose a reader design:
- Manual models are universal.
You can use them for inventory in a warehouse or on a trading floor. Can be mounted on a stand and used in stationary mode. - Stationary models are installed on the cash register. They recognize codes from a long distance and at an angle, which speeds up the work of the cashier. Models are suitable for stores with a large flow of customers.
- Embedded scanners - a subspecies of stationary models. They are built directly into the KKM. Suitable for large chain stores and supermarkets.
Wireless models connect to a base that connects to a PC. These devices can be carried without being limited by the length of the wire. Synchronization range: up to 100 meters.
How to connect a barcode scanner to a PC?
Each model has one or more ports. Often, USB-COM and USB-HID connectors are used for connection. Sometimes other connectors are used, such as RS-232. If the connectors on the computer and scanner do not match, install an adapter.
Please read the instructions before starting synchronization. Wired connection is easy. Insert one end of the cable into the port on the reader. And the other side - into the connector on the computer. Use the cable that comes with the device.
If the cable is inserted correctly, the system will recognize the new device and prompt you to install the software to get started. Free drivers are included with every Mertech reader. Install the drivers according to the instructions. Specify the path to the equipment in the computer settings.
Checking the operation of the barcode scanner
After connecting to the PC, you need to check the operation of the reader. Make sure that the cable is connected, the drivers are installed, the path to the device is registered. Open a text editor or accounting software.
Try to scan a test barcode:
- If the synchronization is successful, it will be displayed in the program or text editor. After that, you can start scanning labels.
- If no new information appears on the monitor, the connection failed.
If there is no synchronization, try reconnecting the device (according to the instructions). If this does not help, restart your computer or laptop. Try again. If barcodes still fail to read, contact Mertech support.
How to connect a barcode scanner to EVOTOR and 5 other online cash registers

Features of the scanner
After successful synchronization, you can start working. Barcode readers are used for:
- Get product information.
- Replenishment of the commodity base (acceptance of goods).
- Item adjustments.
- Sales of goods at the checkout.
Each model's manual lists the reading range and coverage angle when scanning. The information will be recognized if the label is at the right distance and at the right angle. The product name, price, manufacturer and other data will be displayed on the screen.
When selling or accepting goods of the same type, it is possible not to scan each label (unless these are labeled goods). It is enough to scan the code once and set the desired amount in the program. With each sale, KKM generates a sales receipt, which includes the scanned items.
