It is unlikely that anyone today doubts that documents in color look much more prestigious and attractive.
As technology becomes cheaper, many companies are happy to move to color mass printing, as color helps emphasize the importance of information and speed up the decision to read or not to read the document itself. Color also enhances the recall of data, improves emphasis on information, impressions of color are more memorable, and direct mail and letters stay in memory much longer if they are in color.
Studies show that color-coded phone lists increase returns by 44%, and a person is 55% more likely to pick up a color-coded email or ad. Color reduces the search time for the necessary information by 80%, reduces errors by 80%, the use of color in forms and questionnaires will reduce errors when filling out.
Sorting of documents is improved by 15% when using color, this is helped by colored headings, bookmarks, folders, highlighting text with color reduces search time compared to using different fonts by 39%. Buyers are 2.5% more likely to pay the full amount if shown in color.
Studies show that if the invoice is in color, the buyer will prefer it, even if the amount is not the lowest among similar offers.
Color improves the learning process by 78%. The best example is the use of colored materials in educational institutions. The use of color in voluntary questionnaires improves returns and gets significantly more responses, the reader's attention is focused 14% better when using color than just bold text. Finally, brand awareness improves by 80% if a corporate color is used - think of Ferrari, IBM and Xerox.
Currently, desktop color printers use two main printing technologies: laser printing, which, in turn, is divided into "classic laser" and "LED", and solid ink printing. Unlike laser models, solid ink printers were originally designed for color printing
The basis of the technology is a special pigment ink capable of maintaining a solid state. The ink comes in "sticks" in four colors, configured with "fool proof", each for its own slot on the top of the printer.
Loading solid ink into the printer is similar to loading staples into a regular office stapler. Nothing spills on the floor, nothing needs to be cleaned. Ink can be replenished at any time, even during printing. When heated to a certain temperature - just above 60 ° C, the ink turns into a liquid and instantly solidifies with a slight cooling. This enables solid ink to reproduce vibrant colors on virtually any surface.
Solid ink prints in a single paper pass, unlike some modern color laser printers that still use 4-pass technology. Tandem laser printers print fairly quickly in a single pass, but they contain more replaceable parts than solid ink printers.
Molten ink is applied by the print head to the heated surface of the drum, where it retains a viscous state that ensures accurate image transfer to paper. This allows you to reduce the amount of ink distributed along the fibers of the paper, preserve the brightness of colors, and control the amount of dots that affect image quality.
At the same time, the quality of the color image is less dependent on the nature of the surface of the material, which guarantees high-quality printing on various types of materials.
Solid ink is applied through holes smaller than the thickness of a human hair. The production of high-precision printheads is organized in a sterile room, which guarantees their high performance, stability and reliability. It took years of investment, research and experience to create a fully compatible ink and print head system.
Color laser printers reproduce an image by applying powdered toner to paper. Such printers have many parts of a conditionally expendable class: photoreceptors, image transfer rollers, fuser (oven) rollers, fuser webs, waste toner collectors and four toner cartridges. All of these elements are subject to wear during the printing process and their life depends on the number of pages printed or the toner consumption of each color. Over time, all this requires replacement and maintenance, and also means a significant increase in the cost of printing when even small color images are added to a page of text.
At the same time, solid ink technology also has one definite disadvantage. The fact is that at the moment of a "cold start" of the printer, ink is necessarily "pumped", which costs a part of the stick of each color. Such is the technology, and all that can be done here is just to try to keep waste of ink to a minimum. Even before I started writing this article, I received several letters in the mail asking me to certainly cover this issue when testing the most modern solid ink printer. I tell everyone who is interested: in comparison with the "oldies" like the Phaser 860 that are in operation, the ink consumption of new models for initialization is significantly reduced. This was confirmed to me by Xerox employees, I was able to verify this myself - at least, compared to the Phaser 350 model, which I happened to use, the consumption has decreased quite noticeably. In addition, Xerox experts simply recommend not disconnecting solid ink printers from the network during downtime - as servers, fortunately, the power consumption of new products in standby mode is reduced to a minimum.
A wish that is quite acceptable for an office printer, which, in fact, are the models of the Phaser 8500/8550 series; for the home, such devices are unlikely to be purchased.
So, the solid ink printer consists of three main blocks:
1. Print head that applies ink to the drum
2. Drum that transfers the image to paper
3. The controller is a control system that converts computer data into a printed image.
Adding a body and paper tray - and get a solid ink printer. Instead of a metal paper feed belt like most printers, Xerox uses a solid cast aluminum frame in solid ink printers. This improves mechanical accuracy, reliability and print quality. The combination of a dedicated color architecture and a high-speed controller delivers the most important benefit for standard office color jobs - fast first print. Xerox solid ink printers have a very short paper path, so the image is quickly transferred to the paper. Printing does not require synchronization, solid ink printers do not have a heated fuser roller.
Heating of solid ink to a viscous state occurs once, at the beginning of the working cycle. All this allows to reduce the first printout time to a minimum - a few seconds.
The printing process looks quite simple. At the very beginning of the process, a microscopic layer of silicone grease is applied to the pressure roller to facilitate the process of ink separation from the heated drum. All four colors of ink are simultaneously applied to the rotating drum from the print head. This technology allows you to achieve high speed printing at low cost.
The transfer of the image to a slightly heated paper is carried out at the moment of its passage between the drum and the pressure roller, and the image is fixed almost instantly, as it cools, without the use of fusers (ovens) characteristic of laser printing.
Another unique benefit of solid ink technology is its minimal environmental impact. Solid ink printers have only one type of replaceable consumables, and not several, like color laser printers.
As a result, for 100 thousand prints, a color laser printer produces about 55 kg of waste, while a solid ink printer produces only 3 kg of waste.
