10 Best Nintendo 64 Games

N64 Games At this point the library feels historically thin compared to other Nintendo consoles, but these great Nintendo games are from the 64-bit era

Launched in 1996 for the Nintendo 64 packed an advanced 3D home gaming experience into a small gray block of charcoal. It included an innovative triple stick controller with analog stick and four controller ports out of the box, making it the perfect system for multiplayer gaming. While the Nintendo 64 never sold as many consoles as the Sony PlayStation, it still hosted many innovative and high quality games.

Unlike competing consoles from Sony and Sega, the N64 is currently used in ROM cartridges as game media. Nintendo's insistence on cartridges for CDs is declining with piracy as intended, but it also reduces third party involvement. Developers jumped ship to the Sony PlayStation en masse during this generation, making the N64's game library feel historically thin compared to other Nintendo consoles at the moment. Publishers have only released 388 N64 titles so far in all regions, of which Americas has received 296.

Out of those 296 games released in the US, I pulled out 10 that could easily stand as one of the best games on the platform. Although the graphics on the N64 may not have aged as gracefully as some other consoles, such games are still as fun to play today as they were when they were released.

As always, there is a nuance to these choices. While N64 fans at the moment may have found the console's library lacking in quantity, back in the day, they are delighted with the high quality of the titles. So you can probably sell about three or four of these titles with equally good games depending on your taste of the genre. For example, some of the most loved songs on this list are Super Smash Bros., GoldenEye: 007, and Pokemon Stadium. Also, there is no ranking order here; they are just all good games still worth playing today.

    Mario Kart 64 (1997)

Nintendo packed so much fun into Mario Kart 64—sights, sounds, music. It's like a family carnival ride being rolled out in a cartridge game. While Super Mario for Super Cars was originally designed for Nintendo kart racing, Mario Kart 64 let the concept breathe with fully polygonal 3D tracks, new battle modes, and support for up to four simultaneous racers, making this a wonderful holiday game. For solo players, even when you've finished beating all the GP cups on three speed plus mirror tracks, you still have plenty of attack time challenges ahead of you. The replay value here is huge.

  • In Doom 64 (1997)

Due to its release date, Doom 64 is generally overlooked compared to shooters like Gogol:007, which landed later in 1997. But this dark and brooding title should be on every FPS fan's playlist. Ironically, while Doom 64's non-poly graphics were considered obsolete at the time, these graphics are actually its age much better than many other 3D shooters on the console. The controls have aged too well: As the first Doom title with proportional analog motion, Doom 64 still feels like a modern take on a retro shooter. Lack of jump and look up/down features, which critics cite as flaws in 19'97 and shine in retrospect, keeping the demon-slaying experience fast, arcade, and easy to hit. Pulse-pounding and genuinely scary at times, this is the best single-player shooter on the N64.

  • Mario 2 (1999)

In 1998, Mario and the team invaded the board game land with Mario on the N64 for now. It delivered a novel turn based 1-4 player party game punctuated with frantic and addictive action based mini-games at the end of each turn. Unfortunately, many of the intensely physical mini-games (such as "turn the stick as fast as you can") in the first Mario game wore out the handles and gave players blisters. The game Mario 2, released the following year, improved upon that by taming the finger-fingering of the game, adding new boards, and by throwing in-game features such as costumes. Many Mario fans still consider this game to be the best in the series. Considering that there have been at least 15 Mario games released across eight different platforms since then, that's saying a lot.

  • Banjo-Kazooie (1998)

During the golden age of 3D platforming, the Nintendo 64 played host to at least four great entries in the genre. Of these, Banjo-Kazooie really stands out with his good controls, lovable characters, vibrant graphics, great dynamic music, atmospheric levels, and a good dose of humor. You play as a banjo, a bear with a bird named Kazooie, who hides in a backpack until needed. Kazui helps out by expanding the banjo's abilities, such as flapping its wings for a double jump or pecking at enemies. This game has gained a high reputation for the N64 sequel at the moment under the banjo-tooie that many consider to be of similar quality.

  • Perfect Dark (2000)

If you're looking for Gogol:007 on this list, I must apologize: I gave my slit a perfectly dark, different, rare title that many fans believe surpasses the popular James Bond shooter. For most people, the single player mode of perfect gloom is not the main attraction. Like Gogol, it allows for raucous and low four-player gunfights with numerous cool modes, weapons, maps, and features. The controls may feel awkward from a modern shooter's point of view (and the graphics haven't aged well), but once you get used to them, they become second nature. If you're looking for a more mature N64 gaming experience, you can't go wrong with this title.

  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998)

Ocarina of time to relate what Super Mario 64 Mario did: he threw it into a fully 3D polygonal world with a movable camera and proportional analog controls. The results stunned fans and critics alike, who praised the game for its innovative context-sensitive controls, intuitive combat (with Z-targeting), rich world building, challenging but fair dungeons, and an epic soundtrack that can never be compared to a Zelda title. . Melody plays a key role in this adventure: Link Ocarina's flute can change the world around him, including the weather and time itself. Once you dive into the Ocarina of Time, you can't help but feel like you've been pulled into a living, breathing world. While it's tempting to play it on an emulator these days, I suggest tracing the real thing on a real CRT is the most enveloping experience.

  • Paper Mario (2000)

Paper Mario puts the protagonist and his Mushroom Kingdom cohorts in a humorous RPG in a hybrid 2D-3D world where the characters exist as flat, paper-thin objects in three-dimensional space. The console light on RPGs is probably the best RPG on the system. Combat combines turn-based commands with action elements such as specially timed button presses to perform additional damage. The rich, colorful illustrations and interesting local history in this game makes Paper Mario feel like a love letter to a fan of the entire Mario universe that has come to life.

  • Race Wave 64 (1996)

On this day, it's amazing how smoothly and intelligibly the wave of Race 64 captures the feeling of rolling ocean waves. The character models look blocky by today's standards, but water is alive . On the slippery surface of the ocean, you control a racer on a Kawasaki jet ski (the game was sponsored by this company) racing for sweet jumps in and around buoys in various weather conditions. There is also a stunts mode and a two player verses option. It's a big change from mundane racers like Mario Kart 64—and rollicking arcade-style racing action at its best.

  • The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (2000)

Majora's mask, as a direct continuation of the Ocarina of time, is similar to the surface. But he plays more like the surrealist David Lynch feature film Star Wars Ocarina of the time. The fierce-looking moon hangs over the term, getting closer until it destroys everything. You must analyze the same three days until you can keep the term from being destroyed. Using Ocarina, you can control the flow of time to reset your progress and figure out the timeline of events to make all the right things happen. Along the way, you'll discover many masks that change their appearance and give you special abilities. It may feel insanely out of reach compared to the Ocarina of the time, but once your drawing is out of its system, the complexity of the game's structure unfolds before you like an ornate paper flower. This is arguably the deepest and most challenging adventure Nintendo has ever created.

  • Super Mario 64 (1996)

In 1996, Mario entered the third dimension for the first time in this groundbreaking game, making Super Mario (1985, NES) an innovation genre. You play as Mario as he visits different worlds come together, just like the paintings hanging on the walls of Princess Peach's castle. The game gets a lot of mileage from each world and offers different scenarios in each one, with the goal of getting a different star each time. While other titles soon surpassed it in terms of graphical complexity and gameplay, there is a nice core of Mario 64 with huge replay value that still stands out.
