Negotiating table with layout
I haven't posted anything from my work for a long time.... We should fix it!)
So: we'll start with one unique work, which was worked on by three people and one old printer! 1:500 I must say right away that the area here is more than real. Our task was to repeat the terrain and buildings in this layout as much as possible.
I apologize in advance for the quality of some photographs. We filmed on Nokia 3310 in the cramped conditions of "beginning" layout specialists)
Location: in addition to aerial photography and satellite images, we had to repeatedly go to the place. This is the Mozhaysky district, the village of Alekseevka. Yes, the table is there. Ecorancho area.
The territory is huge and consists of a little more than 10 hectares with buildings, landscape and, most importantly, its inhabitants. Animals. nine0003
Getting Started
My colleague and I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how much space a 1:500 scale model would take. As a result, we agreed that 1.1mx1.2m would be enough for us and the search began for a specialist who would make the countertop. The tabletop was made for us by a good craftsman from solid oak. The work was very difficult and the period took about 2 months in the manufacture of the mock-up space.
The main task was to make not just a countertop, but also a cabinet and a niche for wiring, lighting controls, etc. The tabletop must have an edge for laying bulletproof glass, 10 mm thick, and an edge for laying a diode tape. The task with the table was completed and we started the main work....
Model work...
It didn't take us much time to make the houses, fortunately, there are no more than 10 of them on the territory and they are small. The only thing that needed to be repeated with maximum compliance was the main two-story building of the Family Estate and the stable with the hotel. We modeled the main building according to the drawings in the same notorious Tinkerkade)) And the rest of the houses too. This did not affect the quality of the model in any way, given the scale of the products.
For printing, we used the printer that I had at that time, and it was the equipment of "high technical and engineering creation" by Stas Pryanikov. Yes, Stas, "hello" to you too!)))) But, oddly enough, the machine coped with this task. Of course, here a big profit was given to us by ABS plastic from Filamentarno, with its stable quality (do not take it for advertising, in fact, plastic took out many projects).
Printed first floor of the Estate.
Given that most of the houses were made of wood, we did not process them after printing. The layers gave a good texture of wood after priming and painting.
The stable dries after the soil and is waiting for improvements. After the ground, all jambs and shortcomings are opened, which makes it possible to notice them in time and promptly correct them. There are ventilation holes in the roof of the stable. A little later we will close them with transparent plastic.
The remaining buildings are already drying after painting. Well, where, if not on the battery?)))) (Reference to cramped conditions). Buildings are ready. You have to install them. Where?!!!! nine0003
Model space
After bringing in the tabletop, adjusting the glass and checking all the necessary holes, we started to make the model space itself.
We must have a layout with a landscape, which means we need hills and reservoirs. To do this, we printed long spacers that will give some height to the PVC sheet and we can safely play with these very heights. We did not bother with cutting these sheets and simply printed stops and stripes for rigidity in 3dash. nine0003
The sheet is laid, it's time to start creating the landscape.
There is nothing complicated here. A section of the sheet is cut out for the landscape and then covered with material corresponding to the map. Yes, the grass, unfortunately, is not made on a 3D printer, but the effect is colossal. Especially when there are a lot of them. And different colors.
We estimate the parts of buildings for installation and marking of the territory.
After laying out the buildings and roads, we finish the landscaping and make holes for lighting wiring. Planting trees and bushes...
Laying wires.
We made a small pool near the sauna building.
The cars were printed in silhouette and subsequently painted in the desired colors. The landscape is ready.
Animals, buildings, landscape and cars are added to the layout. Building lighting also works.
Backlight
Separately, I want to highlight the backlight functionality. It consists of two zones. General - perimeter, and illumination of buildings. It is controlled from a simple remote control and can work together or separately. The dimmer was a plus. Total 1-4 modes. Looks very lively! nine0003
The photo shows a greenhouse. We acted simply and reliably: we printed out the frame and glued it with a transparent film.
At the time of making this layout, we did not have a photopolymer printer, so we had to purchase animals. But, we had to paint them ourselves, because. We really didn't like the color scheme, which was originally.
The background was printed by a nearby printer. The backdrop really enlivens the layout, especially in this case.
This is what the finished model looks like on the Customer's territory. nine0003
Epilogue
It is a pity that we could not bring this model to the 3D Fest. The table is made to last. We simply could not separate the countertop from the cabinet. But, it was the wish of the customer. The table must be solid and must not leave the room where it is placed under any circumstances!)
I hope you liked our work. Ahead of a couple of articles on a similar topic. We have something to show!
Contact us! We will fulfill any of your wishes under the Order and this work will surely surprise everyone!)
Best regards!
How to get a .STL file of any landscape in seconds

3D modeling
A real landscape, not a fictional one? With accurate display of rivers, mountains and lakes? In general, 3D printing of landscapes as such is not particularly difficult.
But how do you get an accurate model of the site you like? nine0003As it turns out, nothing is easier. This was taken care of by ThatcherC on GitHub. His software, a .STL file generator called Terrain2STL, allows you to select any part of the earth's surface and convert it into a file suitable for 3D printing. Using the program is incredibly easy. All you need to do is select the desired site on Google maps and click on "Create STL file". That's all. The program automatically creates a file and downloads it to your hard drive. Further, the file can be edited if necessary, or simply sent for slicing and printing. nine0003
It is worth bearing in mind that this application is a kind of experiment, and therefore very primitive and has some obvious flaws:
- For example, it is not possible to select surface areas that cross zone boundaries expressed in the form of a grid. On the other hand, you can make several .STL files on different sides of the borders and join them together using a CAD editor.
- The program only allows you to select areas of a certain size, since the maximum zoom increase does not increase the resolution. The number of polygons of "enlarged" areas will be very small, and the models will come out angular. nine0131
- Do not print received models without filling. Difficult surfaces or large horizontal areas can cause failures. Add at least the minimum filling, 10% percent, and there should be no problems.
Here is a simple solution. Unfortunately, it is not clear how long this service will work, because this is a purely amateur project. You can try Terrain2STL here.
