To make the best printing decisions, you need to understand the basic principles of printing, including issues such as how printer resolution or monitor calibration and resolution affect illustration printing. Illustrator's Print dialog box is for printing a document. The sets of options in this window are organized to control the printing process.

An overprint is a one-page version of an illustration that corresponds to the representation in the illustration window, or in other words, a direct print job. Composite prints can be used to make proof prints of the page layout, check the resolution of an image, and troubleshoot problems that may occur with the photo output device (such as PostScript errors).

  1. Select "File" > "Seal".

  2. Select a printer from the Printer menu. To print to a file instead of a printer, select Adobe PostScript® File or Adobe PDF.

  3. Select one of the artboard options below.

    • To print all content on one page, select Ignore Artboards.

    • To print each artboard separately, deselect Ignore Artboards and choose whether you want to print all artboards (All) or areas within a specific range, such as 1-3.

  4. On the left side of the dialog box, select the Output check box and make sure that Composite Impression is set.

  5. Specify additional print options.

  6. Press the "Print" button.

    If your document has layers, you can specify which layers to print. Choose File > Print, then choose the appropriate option from the Print Layers menu: Visible and Printable Layers, Visible Layers, or All Layers. The Layers palette makes it easy to print different versions of a document. For example, to test text, you can only print text objects. You can add nonprinting elements to your illustrations to record important information.

  • To prevent objects from being displayed, printed, or exported, hide the objects in the Layers palette.
  • To prevent objects from printing (but keep display and export), double-click the layer name in the Layers palette. In the Layer Options dialog box, deselect Print and click OK. The name of such a layer in the Layers palette will be displayed in italics.
  • To create a graphic that will not be printed or exported, but displayed on the artboard, in the Layer Options dialog box, select Template.

All categories of options in the Print dialog box, from the Basic options to the Summary options, are organized to control how documents are printed. To display a set of options, select the set name on the left side of the dialog box. Many of these options are pre-set in the launch profile that is selected when the document is opened.

The thumbnail in the Print dialog box shows where the printed objects will appear on the page.

  1. Choose File > Print.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • Drag the thumbnail illustration in the lower left corner of the dialog box.

    • Click the square mark or arrow on the Placement icon to set the origin to align the artwork on the page. Enter values ​​in the X-Axis Start and Y-Axis Start fields.

      Tip . To move the printable area directly on the artboard, drag it in the illustration window using the Split to Print tool. As you drag, the Print Splitter reacts as if you were dragging the printable area from the bottom left corner. The printable area can be freely moved within the artboard, however, any part of the page that extends beyond the printable area will not be printed.

The user can print a document with multiple artboards in a variety of ways. You can ignore artboards and print all content on one page (if your artboards are larger than the page size, you may need to apply splits). Or you can print each artboard on a separate page. When printing artboards on separate pages, the user can choose to print all areas or a range of areas.

  1. Choose File > Print.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • To print all artboards on separate pages, select All. All pages can be seen in the preview area in the lower left corner of the Print dialog box.

    • To print a subset of artboards on separate pages, select Range and specify the artboards you want to print.

    • To print all the artboards of an illustration on one page, select Ignore Artboards. If your illustration is larger than the page size, you can scale or split the illustration.

  3. Specify other print options and click Print.

Illustrator adds the ability to automatically rotate all artboards for printing on media of a given size. Select the Auto Rotate check box in the Print dialog box and Illustrator documents will be automatically rotated. For a document created in Illustrator, Auto Rotate is enabled by default.

For example, you create a document that contains both portrait (height greater than width) and landscape (width greater than height) artboards. If you select portrait orientation for the size option in the Print dialog box, landscape artboards will automatically rotate when printed to output to portrait media.

When set to Auto Rotate, the page orientation cannot be changed.

When printing an illustration consisting of a single artboard (or ignoring artboards) and unable to fit it to one page, the user may split the illustration into multiple pages. If the document has multiple artboards

  1. Choose File > Print.

  2. Select a split option:

    If your document has multiple artboards, select Ignore Artboards, or enter a value of 1 in the Range field and select Fit to Paper Size.

    Full pages

    Divides the printed artboard into full size pages.

    Areas that can display an image

    Divides the artboard into pages based on the characteristics of the selected device. This option is used to print illustrations that, due to their size, cannot be processed by the output device. This option allows you to assemble the original illustration of a large size from the separated fragments.

  3. (Optional) If Full Pages is selected, set the Overlap option to determine the amount of overlap between pages.

To fit large documents on a sheet of paper that is smaller than the actual size of the document, you can rescale the document (symmetrically or asymmetrically change the width and height of the document) in the Print dialog box. Asymmetric scaling is used, for example, when printing films for flexography. If you know which direction the form will be placed on the image drum, scaling can compensate for 2% to 3% of normal form stretch. Scaling does not affect the size of the pages in the document, only the scale of the printed document changes.

  1. Choose File > Print.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • To avoid scaling, select the Do Not Scale check box.

    • To automatically scale the document and fit it on the paper, select the Fit to Paper check box. The scaling value is determined by the image area specified in the selected PPD file.

    • To make the Width and Height fields available, check the Custom Scaling option. Enter a percentage of the width and height between 1 and 1000. Clear the Maintain Aspect Ratio check box to change the width-to-height ratio of the document.

Adobe Illustrator achieves the best print speed and quality when using the printer's default resolution and screen size settings. However, in some cases it is necessary to change these values, for example, when printing a very long path that is not printed due to a limit control error, or when printing is very slow, or when banding occurs when printing gradients and meshes.

  1. Choose File > Print.

  2. Select a PostScript printer, Adobe PostScript® file, or Adobe PDF as the printer.

  3. Select "Output" on the left side of the "Print" dialog box.

  4. In the "Printer Resolution" area, set the combination of screen line (lpi) and printer resolution (dpi).

Printer resolution is measured by the number of dots of ink per inch (dpi). Most desktop laser printers have a resolution of 600 dpi, photo output devices have a resolution of 1200 dpi or higher. In inkjet printers, printing is created by microscopic ink droplets. And although these are not actually dots, the resolution of most inkjet printers is approximately 300 to 720 dpi.

When printing on desktop laser printers, and especially on photo output devices, the screen size must be taken into account. Screen line is the number of halftone cells per inch when printing images in grayscale or color separation mode. Screen line (also called screen frequency) is measured in lines per inch (lpi), that is, cell lines per inch in a halftone screen.

A high screen size (eg 150 lpi) places the dots close together and produces a very sharp print image; with a low raster lineature (from 60 to 85 lpi), the dots are located at a distance from each other and the image is coarser. The size of the dots is also determined by the raster lineature. With a high raster lineature, small dots are used; at low - large size. The most important factor in choosing screen lineature is the type of printing press. Find out in the printing house where the documents will be printed, what screen frequency the printing machine supports, and based on this data, make a further decision.

PPD files for high-resolution photo output devices support a wide range of possible screen lines and different resolutions. PPD files for low-resolution printers typically offer only a few screen lines—typically coarse screens from 53 lpi to 85 lpi. However, the use of coarse screens gives optimal results when printed on these printers. Using a higher quality screen, such as 100 lpi, will actually reduce image quality if you are printing on a low resolution printer. This is because as lpi increases for a given resolution, the number of colors that can be reproduced decreases.

Some photo output devices and desktop laser printers use screening methods other than halftone.
