Film industry

3D PRINTING - A REVOLUTION IN THE PRODUCTION PROCESS

Recently, there has been more and more talk about the vast possibilities that 3D printing opens up. 3D printers allow you to minimize manual labor, reduce financial costs and increase production speed. They are used to make a wide variety of things. 3D printers are also being used more and more actively in the film production process. 3D printing began to be used in cinema in the second half of the 90s. Notable films that have used the power of 3D printing include Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World, Terminator Salvation, Avatar, Real Steel, Iron Man, Prometheus , "007: Skyfall coordinates". In these and other paintings, 3D printing was used to create a variety of props, costumes and their details, interior parts, scenery layouts. An example of a company successfully mastering 3D printing technologies is the British FBFX, one of the world's leading manufacturers of costumes and movie props. In the mid-2000s, FBFX invested in the development of the Objet30 Desktop printer. This Stratasys 3D printer allows you to quickly design and print a 3D CAD file.

Objet30 Desktop was first used on the set of Ridley Scott's sci-fi film Prometheus. To create the space helmet of the heroine Noomi Rapace, difficult-to-manufacture fasteners were needed. Under the normal procedure, the production of these parts would require outsourcing, and the process would take several weeks. Making the necessary elements on a 3D printer took several hours.

Another example of the use of 3D printing in filmmaking is the costume of Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man. To determine the necessary parameters, the actor's body was scanned. In accordance with the data obtained, a suit model was created in a special editor. Next, using direct metal laser sintering (DMLS), the required suit was 3D printed and then painted. While handmade costumes usually have to be remade many times because they either differ from the authors’ intentions or do not fit the actor, restricting his movements, 3D printing has made it possible to produce the desired item the first time, and at the same time costing little.

In addition to costumes and their details, 3D printers are used to create various props. For example, in 007: Skyfall, 1:3 copies of the Aston Martin DB 5 were made to shoot the car explosion scene. On a VX 4000 3D printer manufactured by Voxeljet, 18 parts were printed, including a roof, hood, doors, etc. , which were then assembled into a car. The painted model is almost indistinguishable from the original up close. Of course, it was much cheaper to blow up a printed car than if a real one were used for this. The choice of materials from which a 3D suit can be made is practically unlimited. These can be polymers, plastics, ultra-thin metals, and different materials can be combined in one suit. Among the existing shortcomings of 3D printing, filmmakers call horizontal stripes barely noticeable on the surface of the printed object - traces of printed layers. However, it is unlikely that this disadvantage, which is corrected by manual grinding and polishing, will become an obstacle to the further use of 3D printing in film production.

3D printed cartoon

Chase Me - "Catch Me" (translated by Losprinters.ru) embodies the magic of puppet animation, almost completely created on a modern 3D printer Formlabs Form1+. The picture tells about the adventures of a young girl who runs away through a dark forest from her own shadow.

Director and designer Gilles-Alexandre Deschaux spent 2 years to create the cartoon, modeled and printed 2500 parts on a 3D printer.

According to the director – “The peculiarity of traditional puppet animation is that the characters are made of plastic material that can be bent and moved for each frame. We went a more complicated way and for each new frame we printed a separate model. Traditional technology does not allow us to create such tiny figurines with such high detail, but with the help of the Form1+ 3D printer, we have succeeded.”

The project started with a simple storyboard of the plot and characters, then we created a virtual model of the character and printed it on a 3D printer. For every second of the film, up to 15 versions of the models of the main character were created. All elements are printed with a resolution of 100 microns. To save time, we independently calculated and designed the support elements of the model.

For general scenes, the main character was modeled and printed 3 cm high and 7 cm close-up. Some parts were created from several printed parts and then glued together. For example, we assembled a giant tree from 22 separate parts.

Catch Me is a story that captures our fears and turns them into something beautiful,” says Gilles-Alexandre.

Gilles-Alexandre Deschaux, has been working for the last 7 years in a special effects company for cinematography and computer games, as a digital artist and animator. Throughout his career, Gilles-Alexandre has experimented with various methods of creating effects, such as using a hybrid of painting and drawing combined with 3D animation. His experimentation with new styles led him to 3D printing technologies.

Creativity

The use of additive technologies for animation is no longer a novelty, but the high cost of producing thousands of detailed 3D printed models prevents this method from becoming widespread among amateur animators.

Sufficiently large studios like Laika, which created Coraline in the Land of Nightmares, Paranorman and The Monster Family, are able to use 3D printed models for frame-by-frame reproduction thanks to a budget backed by a financial guarantee of wide distribution of the finished product with reimbursement of filming costs from sales.

But despite the complexity and cost, a French artist ventured to independently shoot a short film using as many as 2,500 models printed with a Form1+ stereolithographic 3D printer and a generous infusion of 80 liters of photopolymer resin. The name of our hero is Gilles-Alexandre Deschaux.

Gilles-Alexandre is no stranger to cinema, being a professional CGI and special effects artist. Of course, his profession requires good imagination and ingenuity, including the desire and ability to explore new methods.

“When I first saw the Form1 3D printer on Kickstarter, I knew right away that this was what I needed to create a 3D printed cartoon,” recalls Gilles-Alexandre. "I decided to try out 3D printing in puppet animation for my own film."

After two years of painstaking work, Gilles-Alexandre has achieved the result of his first 3D printed cartoon, Catch Me, which will premiere at the prestigious Annecy International Animated Film Festival. In addition, the picture was selected for display at the International Festival in Cannes.

The plot begins with a little girl walking in a fairy forest. Then, her shadow turns into a monster that starts chasing the heroine. What's next? We will see when the official premiere takes place.

“Catch Me is a story about fighting your own fears and turning them into something beautiful,” says Gilles-Alexandre. Perhaps it is appropriate to draw an analogy here with the difficult task of creating a cartoon from 2,500 parts, which can instill in any artist at least self-doubt.

Each frame of the cartoon was first created using computer graphics and then used to create physical models. Each second of the finished film contains fifteen frames. Note that not only the figures were printed, but also the background in each frame. Printing was carried out in layers of one hundred microns and with minimal post-processing, which actually amounted to only the removal of support structures after printing. “Without the Form1, I would not have been able to produce such small but complex and detailed models,” says Gilles-Alexandre. Some larger objects, like a large tree, were broken up into several parts, up to twenty-two maximum, due to the limited volume of the printer's working chamber.

“Users like Gilles-Alexandre doing extraordinary things with our printers inspire our team. Catch Me is full of beauty and inspiration, both in terms of aesthetics and meticulous attention to detail,” said Max Lobovsky, co-founder of Formlabs, which makes Form1 3D printers.
