2022 Formlabs Impact Award Winners

In October 2022, Formlabs hosted its annual User Summit, where 3D printing innovators, experts and enthusiasts come together to learn, discuss and celebrate. Community representatives shared their experiences and inspired a global audience through over 40 virtual sessions in eight different languages.

Influence in every industry

In previous years, the Impact Award has been given to an individual or group of individuals who have contributed to society through 3D printing. In 2019This year, Impact Award winner Matej Vlasic accepted the trophy during the first Formlabs User Summit for his achievement in designing and 3D printing custom prostheses for his son.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Drs. Summer Decker and Jonathan Ford of the University of South Florida and their collaborator Todd Goldstein of Northwell Health received an Impact Award for their work on the 3D printed nasal swab and for addressing a supply chain shortage. that undermined efforts to fight the pandemic.

In 2021, Julien Montenero received an Impact Award for inventing a new prosthetic workflow for breast cancer survivors. These three winners are great examples of the incredible impact that 3D printing can have on our health and thus our quality of life.

In 2022, Formlabs launched the Impact Award for eight different industries, and the nominations poured in. Following a vote, the following outstanding individuals have been selected by the Formlabs user community for their brilliant work.

Trophy Creation: Nervous System

Art and design collaboration Nervous System came up with the trophy design for the Impact Award.

Drawing on their expertise in medical 3D printing, the team developed a fluid reimagining of the butterfly logo. Trophy mimics the vascular pathways in the human body and uses fluidics techniques to create a dye well encased in a polished prism printed with Clear Resin.

The submillimeter channels, created by Nervous System's Hyphae generative design system and extensive research into organ functionality, allow the dye to move and return through the channels after it has completely penetrated the butterfly. Art, science, nature, innovation and that intangible factor of awe - Nervous System has given the Impact Award winners such a wonderful reminder of their incredible accomplishments.

Production: Hasbro

Not everyone can "break the status quo in design and manufacturing," as Winston said in his opening remarks, but the Hasbro team certainly did with their industry-changing Selfie Series project (read more about the Selfie Series project here). Using the power of scanning and 3D printing, everyone can see their face, hair color and skin tone reflected in their favorite superhero. By not only reproducing personalized features, but also producing them at scale, Hasbro has set the bar high for mass personalization. "On behalf of the Hasbro Selfie team, I am delighted to accept the Formlabs Impact Award. This partnership has been a labor of love for the past two years," said Patrick Marr.

Research and Education: Andrew Bergeron and James Crigger, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories

It is difficult to generalize the influence of researchers and teachers or choose one of them. After all, it is a very broad discipline. Research can include environmental sustainability, space travel or the search for a cure for cancer, while educators create the future by shaping, nurturing and influencing the leaders of tomorrow. Therefore, it was not easy to choose one of them to receive the award.

However, the Formlabs user community voted and chose an Impact Award winner who focused on research in the highly influential discipline of nuclear power. Andrew Bergeron and James Crigger are scientists at the Canadian Nuclear Laboratory who use the Form 3 SLA 3D printer in their lab to optimize the geometry and design of nuclear fuel pellets. They are working to make nuclear power, a zero-emission fuel source, safer and more efficient. “3D printing allows for much more flexibility in part design, and when applied to nuclear fuel, 3D printing allows for the ability to make fuel that is better at dissipating heat, which ultimately makes it safer and more efficient,” says Bergeron. As the world searches for ways to reduce carbon emissions, improve transport efficiency and develop cleaner methods of electricity generation, the work of Bergeron and Crigger plays an important role in finding solutions.

Dentistry: Dr. Yurdanur Uchar

From the very beginning, Formlabs and dental professionals have worked together to provide better, faster and more affordable patient care. Today's 3D printing tools owe much of their success to dentists, researchers, and lab leaders; thanks to their commitment to empowerment, printers and materials are getting better. Formlabs is proud to be a part of this cycle and are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with such wonderful people as prosthetist, educator and researcher Dr. Yurdanur Uchar.

Dr. Uchar has contributed to the field of dental 3D printing through extensive research, and both her anecdotal support and clinical and peer-reviewed research have contributed to the widespread adoption of Formlabs technology and 3D printing technology in general in the dental industry. In over two decades of practice and research, Dr. Uchar has never wavered from her mission to improve patient care. While accepting the Formlabs Impact Award, Dr. Uchar said, "I've always loved dentistry, but thanks to 3D printing, I'm loving my job again because it helps me serve patients at a high level in a shorter amount of time. 3D printing makes it much easier to do patients are happier." Sustainability: Ferran Navarro, SiOCAST

Talk about the positive benefits of 3D printing tends to point to the impact on the business, such as reduced time to market, more frequent iteration cycles, design freedom, lighter construction, and so on down the list. Many of these benefits have the added benefit of being better for the environment. It is when the best practices of sustainable development also become the best business practices that we will see the mass adoption of solutions that can protect, preserve and improve our environment.

Siocast is a plastic parts manufacturer that has developed a new machine that bridges the gap between injection molding and resin casting. They have also developed casting and molding materials that are 100% recyclable for a waste-free workflow. In their work, they use Formlabs 3D printers to create high-quality master models (read more about the use of Formlabs 3D printers at Siocast here). During the Formlabs User Summit, Winston spoke live with Navarro about the Siocast process and what it means to develop sustainable practices in an industry that historically generates tons of plastic waste. Navarro detailed the 0% plastic waste technology and outlined the many environmental benefits of outsourcing 3D printing, molding and injection molding processes to both Siocast and their customers.

Healthcare: Brian Albers, St. Louis Children's Hospital

While other industries were honored this year, rewarding healthcare innovators was no less important than in previous years. In the field of 3D printing in healthcare, there is such a variety of applications, experiences and approaches, but the common one remains the same - to help people by improving the quality of their care.

Brian Albers, a 3D printing engineer at St. Louis Children's Hospital, has developed 3D printing protocols for two different children's hospitals that have impacted hundreds of patients' outcomes. His experience as a 3D printing expert in point of care deployment is invaluable to thousands of hospitals and medical practitioners who want to bring the benefits of 3D printing to their facilities. Albers' work has contributed to improved outcomes for patients in the operating room, and has also helped families cope with trauma with illustrative models: "These models give clinicians a better understanding and platform to practice and plan these procedures. But at the same time, they help parents better understand what happens to their child... to better understand what is going on in the process and maybe reduce some stress in the waiting room," says Albers.

Art and design: Jenny Wu, LACE by Jenny Wu

Jenny Wu is the definition of a multi-hyphenate. Architect, designer, founder, business owner, entrepreneur, innovator - the list is endless. 3D printing has been a mainstay of her work as an architect and partner at the OylerWu Collaborative, a multidisciplinary design firm in Los Angeles, and she has used this experience in her jewelry business, Lace by Jenny Wu. Bespoke jewelry is a niche market that is becoming expensive and inaccessible due to long lead times, high prices, and the required face-to-face meetings to determine size and style.

Wu's aptitude for 3D printing and design allows him to use the Fuse 1 SLS 3D printer to produce low cost try-on models so that customers can determine the fit, feel and final design. After the final refinement, the products are made of cast gold. Historically, jewelry has been a closed and private industry. Wu has made it available to more consumers by using 3D printing to provide a bespoke, luxurious experience without face-to-face meetings and costly iterations. "It made sense for me to experiment with 3D printing for my jewelry brand. Eight years ago, I never imagined that 3D printing would completely change the game. It shaped my brand ethic, from design, production to marketing," says Wu. .

Product Design and Engineering: Charlie Bird, M2 Optics

Formlabs owes a lot to fiber optic technology. It transmits information faster and more clearly than other types of transmission, and is a key foundation of the entire digital infrastructure. When one company can have such a big impact on how fiber optics components are made, manufactured and distributed, it deserves an Impact Award. Charlie Bird is a designer at M2 Optics, a technology company that designs and manufactures lighter, more accurate fiber optic components. They use 3D printing for design and manufacturing, offloading much of the supply chain in-house. For their core customers, aerospace, defense and communications manufacturers, reducing lead times and lowering costs can make a huge difference.

In receiving the award, Byrd noted the benefits of additive manufacturing, which allows "to reduce dependence on supply chains and create customized solutions in hours or days, not weeks or months."

User Achievement: Thinnest 3D Printing by Britt Ransome, Carnegie Mellon University

There is a lot of talk in the 3D printing industry about technical specifications. How small, how large, what is the particle size, the spot size, how fast, how high, how much? There are differing opinions on the answers to these questions, but one thing we know for sure is that Carnegie Mellon University's Britt Ransom creates a pretty thin print.

Ransome is a sculptor and assistant professor at CMU, who uses environmental data to create digital sculptures that reference both natural and industrial human environments. This combination of influences and inspiration is suitable for 3D printing, and especially resin 3D printing. The incredibly complex organic structures of nature are reproduced using advanced software and brought to life by the fluidity of the resin. “In particular, Formlabs printers allow me to reproduce in nature what others can't, and keep the scale and materiality somewhat similar. 3D printing is a really important part of a larger idea of ​​what it means to capture something, manipulate something, and also look at something in our landscape that we can touch, see on screen and see in real life. . 3D printing allows me to move between these senses, feel the world and see it,” says Ransome.
