Machines versus grandmas: why Uniqlo and Adidas are switching to 3D knitting

A special machine can knit a custom-made sweater, dress or jacket in an hour and a half consumer electronics at CES-2017 Las Vegas) to prosthetics, furniture and pizza. Now fashion brands have seen an opportunity for themselves with the help of such technologies to quickly create knitted clothes for each specific customer.

So, Uniqlo promises to show an unusual collection using 3D knitting technology in the fall, and on the shelves in Adidas Berlin store you can already find a 3D knitted sweater for $215. In addition, on April 7, Adidas announced the launch of the production of sneakers with a 3D printed sole. The new shoes will hit stores in 2018. Fashion brand Eileen Fisher is also interested in the opportunity: the company has teamed up with Intel to showcase the technology at a big trade show in New York.

Boston-based Ministry of Supply has shown an active interest in 3D knitting technology, writes Quartz. In her stores, a special machine creates custom-made three-dimensional yarn products in an hour and a half. After that, the clothes are washed and dried for pre-shrinkage. The cost of such a thing is $ 345, which is slightly higher than the average price of exclusive items on the Internet at $ 285, the newspaper notes. So far, the machine only knits jackets, more like cardigans, Quartz clarifies.

Co-founder Aman Advani believes that the clothes created in this way - for example, sweaters, jackets, dresses and everything else that a person can knit - are not a niche story, but the first step towards sustainable production in the fashion business, satisfying the growing demand for individual products. In addition, the machine produces less waste than traditional human knitting.

Ministry of Supply emphasizes that this 3D printing of clothing allows you to create personalized products, taking into account the characteristics and desires of the buyer. Creating pieces as orders come in is less risky for clothing retailers—they no longer need to run sales with discounts on unsold clothing every season. The technology also gives retailers the opportunity to build a personal connection with customers as they walk into stores rather than simply ordering things online.

Many of the knitting machines, including those used by Ministry of Supply, are made by Shima Seiki in Japan. Uniqlo is also partnering with the company's joint venture to develop a 3D-printable production system for knitwear.

Buying one of these machines is, of course, expensive for smaller brands, costing about $180,000, which is a significant investment for them. Advani jokes that Ministry of Supply only had enough money to ship this large dining-table-sized machine one way. If the rules of the game in the fashion business change in the way the company expects, it intends to buy 3D knitting machines in its eight other stores. The Ministry of Supply believes that they will be able to print one quarter, if not a third, of their entire production. “Or even serve the online market in the next couple of years,” Advani notes.

Ray Kurzweil, a futurist and one of the leading engineers at Google, had previously predicted the mass adoption of 3D printing in the manufacture of clothing by 2020. “As the variety grows and the cost of materials available for 3D printing decreases, popular clothing brands will be widely available on the Internet in just 10 years,” Kurzweil told a predominantly fashion audience. At The New York Times conference in 2016 and before, he predicted that people would soon be using such technologies en masse to create clothes and homes.

The Verge previously wrote that Kniterate is already working on it. The company is developing a home 3D printing machine. The release of the first copies is scheduled for April 2018. Startup Kwambio, in turn, allows using 3D printing technologies to create various ceramic and metal jewelry.

But there is also a downside: 3D printing is a new risk for high fashion due to the ease and mass production of fakes. Starting in 2018, Gartner predicts that intellectual property losses due to the spread of 3D printing technologies in various industries will be about $50 billion a year.
