Version 1 (PVC Pipe Version)

Shopping List

PVC Pipe: 1" Diameter x 5' Length

Glue: I used 5 minute epoxy, you can use superglue and that's it will be ok

Filler: I personally used Bondo Spot Putty, but you can use your filler of choice!

Paint: I used gray putty primer + flat black paint + matt clearcoat.

Print

• You have to print 7 parts: top assembly, bottom assembly and crystal ball.

• Top assembly in 3 pieces; Fins Piece 1 (top), Fins Piece 2 (bottom), and a key to help with assembly.

• The lower assembly consists of 3 parts: shaft base 1 (round piece), shaft base 2 (pointed piece) and a wrench for easy assembly.

• "Crystal Ball" can be printed in FDM or resin. So far I have printed it in FDM, but I plan to print it in resin in the future.

Assembly and post-processing

• Before assembly, you will likely want to cut the PVC pipe a few inches to make it a more suitable length. I cut 5 inches off my PVC pipe for a total length of 55 inches, and it's quite long, but I find it close to "movie-quality" at that length."

• Top Assembly: Use glue to attach fin piece 1, fin piece 2, and key 1.

• Bottom assembly: Use glue to connect shaft base 1, shaft base 2 and key 2.

• Use glue to attach the top and bottom assemblies to the PVC pipe.

• Fill gaps at the junctions of the printed parts and at the junctions of the knots with the PVC pipe with Bondo Spot (or putty of your choice).

• Sanding with 80 grit sandpaper

• Apply a coat of gray primer

• Sand with 80 to 1000 grit sandpaper until desired smoothness is achieved.

• Several coats of flat black paint

• A few coats of matte clearcoat to finish!

• For the Crystal Ball, I simply printed with white filament and lightly sanded where the supports were. In the future I plan to print it in resin and maybe cast it!

Version 2 (fully 3D printed) .

Print

• You have to print 12-13 parts (depending on the desired length): Top knot (3 parts), bottom knot (3 parts) and shaft (5-6 parts).

• Top assembly consists of 3 parts: fins 1 (top), fins 2 (bottom) and a wrench for easy assembly.

• The lower assembly consists of 3 parts: shaft base 1 (round piece), shaft base 2 (pointed piece) and a wrench for easy assembly.

• Shaft: You need to print 5 copies of shaft 1 part (length 250 mm). I would print these and all other parts first, then print part 2 (207mm) or part 3 (80mm) to get the desired final length.

• "Crystal Ball" can be printed in FDM or resin. So far I have printed it in FDM, but I plan to print it in resin in the future.

Assembly and Finishing

• Top Assembly: Use glue to glue Fin Piece 1, Fin Piece 2 and Key 1.

• Bottom assembly: Use glue to connect shaft base 1, shaft base 2 and key 2.

• Assemble the shaft parts together using the printed threads.

• Assemble the top assembly onto the shaft using the cut threads.

• Assemble the lower assembly onto the shaft using the printed threads.

• You can follow the post-processing steps suggested in version 1, or print everything in black and do minimal post-processing!
