Power armor project from Fallout

3Dpulse.ru: Our editors have learned about your Fallout project - power armor on a 3D printer. How did the idea for the project come about? Why armor from Fallout?

Yuri Elkin: It all started with getting to know the game. It was a long time ago. So long ago that sometimes it seems that it never happened at all. The world of Fallout, changed by the catastrophe of nuclear war, seemed so realistic that, while playing, I immersed myself in it with my head. As time went on, I began to devote less time to PC games, but I did not miss the release of a new part of the game. And just recently I came across an article about 3D printing and 3D printers. And in my hands for quite an earthly sum was such an apparatus. After painstaking adjustment and a lot of trial and error, an acceptable print result was achieved. And then, as they say, "Ostap suffered" ...

3Dpulse.ru: At first you made a small helmet - only 5x5 cm. Why did you decide to make a life size helmet after that?

Yu.E.: Small helmet, unfortunately, fell victim to the experiment, was made as a souvenir. After comparing the result with the original from the game, a project was born to create a helmet, implemented in detail. Since there are many similar works and the quality of their execution is very high, the idea was also in the method of manufacture. Printing on a budget (and I don’t have another) printer for a large project on my favorite game.

3Dpulse.ru: I think that our readers will be interested to know how exactly the project was created - what programs did you use to create the model, what 3D printer and what plastic for printing, how did you do the post-processing?

YE: Printing software used different: Repetier-Host because of the honeycomb infill and the ability to fine-tune the process. Cura is used for simpler elements, the automatic adjustment system in it is more to my liking. I print on Prusia I3 - all this can be radically opposite for printing on other printers (including another Prusia). I used different nozzles from 0.2 to 0.8 mm. I only printed PLA, since printing of such parts is the most convenient for me due to the low shrinkage coefficient.

After printing all the elements of the model, the long assembly process began. Putting it all together is half the battle, but I wanted to achieve authenticity. So, there should not be any seams in the wrong places. Therefore, the entire surface, in three layers, with the processing of each with sandpaper and an engraver, was covered with polyester resin. It is much more elastic than epoxy, polymerizes much faster, more penetrating, so all the seams were hidden.

Next priming process - used a 1K filler primer to hide the remaining unwanted marks of printing and processing. Coloring was done with an airbrush, the colors were mixed by hand, choosing the right shade. Some areas have seven coats of paint applied to achieve the desired result!

3Dpulse.ru: Has your project already been noticed by someone? Surely a considerable number of Fallout and cosplay lovers have already contacted you.

Yu.E.: The helmet went with me to the Starcon festival. Participants and guests appreciated both the helmet and the entire Power Armor project. In the same place I received, and for this many thanks, an invitation to the VK festival.

Both visitors and participants showed interest in the project at VK Fest. There were several proposals for making a small copy for souvenirs. Also, to my surprise, one filmmaker contacted with a proposal for cooperation. Let's see what happens from this.

3Dpulse.ru: Will your project continue and develop further? What do you plan to do after the introduction of the helmet to the general public?

Yu.E.: The helmet is only the beginning, a test of the pen (or rather the nozzle). The creation of the entire T-60 Power Armor set from the Fallout game is already in full swing, which will also be identical to the original, including the fact that it can be tried on. As well as weapons from the game. The project turns out to be long, labor-intensive, but extremely interesting!

3Dpulse.ru: Yuri, thank you very much for taking the time to talk to us. We wish you further successful development of the project and look forward to interesting news from you!

1200 hours, 15000 meters of plastic, or PRUSA i3 dreams come true! Seal of power armor from FALLOUT.

Seal of FALLOUT T-60 Power Armor

Hello, friends! Maybe someone already knows me and my project, someone saw us at exhibitions, someone already took pictures of themselves in it, but now I want to tell you all more about yourself and the project.

The project is called Fallout power armor on a 3D printer, of course someone will say there are alternative ways to create armor, but I want to print it, and print it on the simplest Chinese printer, the price is 15k (like three copies of an iPhone) . On the printer of which I myself maintain, repair myself, and also feed myself, although now it is already more difficult)).

So, in this post I will talk about the project itself, all the details in printing, modeling, processing and other information that could tell about how I do it will be in the next posts. I hope for your support. I will thank each of you separately! Information about who helped, what kind of plastic he used, what he processed and how I will tell you without a twinge of conscience, everything will be as it is!

If someone considers this an advertisement - EZ Yu as they say VYSH (as you wish - as you wish)

If there are those who want to help, I will be grateful, but more on that later.

And so we went.

What's the idea?

I love the FALLOUT game world very much. I always wanted to be inside the armor, try it on in the hands of MINIGUN. But there were no opportunities before the advent of the 3D printer.

The desire to purchase this unit appeared after I learned about arduino and what craftsmen could create with it, as well as how much it costs =-). And since the hands are 'sharpened' for modeling and there are end points of sale (work in the field of cars), it was decided to try the new equipment in practice.

The printer was purchased (at a well-known service) in China for 15 tr. with plastic, but the plastic made me very upset and was sentenced to be thrown out through the bucket.

Of course, for 15 tr. - this is a constructor. I assembled it for two days, set it up for 3 months, but this is a huge experience that will come in handy for me in the future, given that the project is exactly calculated for a year.

What does the project consist of?

The project consists of creating, printing, a complete set, yes, a set of armor, weapons and other elements that will emphasize all the charm and intentions of my project.

The beginning was laid by the T-45 helmet, which was a test of the pen.

There were a lot of difficulties.

1. how many parts to divide?

2. what to process?

3. What kind of plastic to print with?

4. What is the crate?

and a number of other nuances and questions.

I wanted to create a fully functional helmet with ventilation, speaker, lighting and other interesting solutions. Some elements were not included in the T-45, as the lack of experience made itself felt.

So, it consists of:

1. T-60 power armor

Its peculiarity is the ability to remove it with the help of special devices as in the game (at the moment there are no final decisions on this issue)

2. create such elements grips that will allow you to crouch in armor, bend at the elbows, no problem (70% of the issue is resolved)

3. weapon. During the voting in my group, it was decided to start with MINI GUN, and here is the most interesting. After the start of printing, the idea came up to make it effective and with the ability to shoot. At this point, the idea with the MINI GUN stopped while creating the elements that would make it shoot.

of course, the MINI GUNe does not end there.

4. Other entourage: Pip-Boy, Bobblehead Vault-Boy, Plasma Charge, Nuclear battery, a couple of non-standard keys, Pip-Boy, power brass knuckles, impulse grenade, Cap-mine, Vault-Tek Lunchbox, Cache with lids . Lots of options.

Where did you get the models?

Models are publicly available on various resources.

But some of them are not prepared for printing at all. The lion's share of the money is spent not on plastic, paint, etc., but on preparing the model for printing.

I am a painter?

No, and they don't smell. But the desire to make a high-quality and interesting project helps to upgrade the 'skill' to the required level. Of course, a lot of time is spent on processing, painting and other measures to improve quality. Since I am not pressed for time, I can carpet over each element for a very long time)

Lots of costs?

Yes, a lot of money is spent on modeling, preparing for printing (despite the fact that there are models, but fitting them costs money, it’s a pity there is no time to master it yourself), as well as consumables (plastic, primer, paint and other)

Due to shortage, the armor has to be slowed down, but the printing of other elements of the project continues. This is where I need your help, for whom it will not be difficult, and I, in turn, will thank you in every possible way)

Where can I see my project?

First of all, I talk about him on social networks:

VK: my group In a group, you can follow the entire project, ask questions and get detailed information faster.
