How it Works

Software Process

  1. Launch and upload STL files into the Viriprint program.
  2. Users can set up, scale, orient, and justify the build volume of their print.
  3. Save print setup and orientation settings for easy repeat prints or to share settings with other foundries.
  4. Begin print job.

Printing Process

  1. Sandhopper delivery system fills the printer head from the backside with sand (solid consumable).
  2. ABB robotic arm positions the print head over the table.
  3. The Viridis 3D printing head drops, spreads, and prints the sand and binder jetting fluid.
  4. CAD software guides the arm, raising the height to complete the printing process layer by layer until the mold is complete.

Exclusive Binder Jetting Technology

Using a patent-pending technology, a proprietary print head attached to an ABB robot arm uses exclusive binder jetting technology to print sand molds, mold cores and investment casting patterns for foundry applications. The proprietary systems include easy-to-use Viriprint software that uses a CAD file to print a mold and core in just a few hours.

A variety of build envelopes are now offered. The RAM 123 prints pieces up to 1’ x 2’ x 3’, with a RAM 224 (2’ x 2’ x 4’), RAM 236 (2’ x 3’ x 6’), and RAM 336 (3’ x 3’ x 6’) now available. Viridis3D can also develop custom solutions with this scalable solution.

Foundries will appreciate the speed with which the systems prints — and how fast their operation can be up and running with the new technology. What’s more, the RAM systems use less sand and are substantially less expensive than other sand casting 3D printers on the market today. In fact, the Viridis3D systems use about one-third the cost of competing technologies that build in a box.

This disruptive technology brings a new way of production to foundries — instead of shipping castings around the world, raw materials are shipped and files are simply transmitted to 3D printers in strategic locations. The result is castings are poured the same day, only where you need them.

EnvisionTEC GmbH is mainly known for its proprietary professional-grade photopolymer 3D printers, widely used in jewelry and dentistry, but recently the German manufacturer has also been developing additive systems for the production of molds.

The work is carried out jointly with the American company Viridis 3D.

Viridis 3D engineers set out to develop a versatile 3D printing system that can be easily adapted to the needs of individual foundries. Robotic manipulators produced by the Swedish-Swiss company ABB were chosen as the positioning mechanism. Special arrays of several heads are hung on the robotic arm, applying a binding agent to the layers of sand.

The system is designed for the production of molds and cores from quartz sand, and as binders, modified furan resins used in the production of polymer concrete, in combination with solid acid catalysts, are used. Different system options are available with different sizes of nozzles - 28" wide arrays with twelve heads or 38" arrays with sixteen heads. The 3D printer is controlled by Viriprint's proprietary software, which allows printing from CAD models.

The construction area depends on the version: 305x610x915 mm in the RAM 123 version, 610x610x1220 mm for the RAM 224, 610x915x1830 mm in the RAM 236 version or 915x915x1830 mm in the RAM 336 version. axes. The performance of the systems is quite high: the growth rate reaches 65 mm/h. The printed products are fired at a temperature of 175°C, after which the strength reaches 2.55 MPa.

In addition to high productivity and production flexibility, Viridis 3D 3D printing systems are also highly cost-effective. The cost of equipment is relatively low when compared with stationary systems of similar capabilities, such as Voxeljet 3D printers. Compared to traditional methods of making molds, 3D printers reduce sand consumption and time costs: the full production cycle from a digital model to a molded product takes a couple of days instead of two months.
