Metal 3D printing - Ultimaker Metal Expansion Kit

06/15/2022

3D printer manufacturer Ultimaker has expanded its platform with the release of the Metal Expansion Kit to make metal 3D printing more accessible and affordable.

Compatible with the Ultimaker S5, the kit is designed to eliminate bottlenecks and limitations in metal 3D printing processes, providing users with the items, software features and knowledge to achieve maximum process efficiency.

" The Ultimaker Metal Expansion Kit is particularly suitable for printing custom parts such as tools, tooling and fixtures, interchangeable parts, functional prototypes and ancillary components" - Andrea Gasperini, Ultimaker Product Manager.

From left: Miguel Calvo (CTO Ultimaker), Tobias Redlmeier (Business Development Manager - Metal Ecosystem at BASF Forward AM), Andrea Gasperini (Product Manager Ultimaker) present the components of the Ultimaker Metal Expansion Kit, developed jointly by the Ultimaker companies and BASF Forward AM.

Company Portfolio Ultimaker

Founded in 2011, Ultimaker has since built a portfolio of open material FDM 3D printers and has also invested heavily in software including Academy, Digital Factory and Cura . The former aims to help users upgrade their skills and those with multiple systems optimize print management in addition to data collection and detail digitization, while the latter is simulation software designed to simplify slicing.

In April, the company released Cura 5.0, a beta version of Cura software, which improved the mechanism to allow users to use variable line width when slicing. The latest version of the program contains many features that will allow users to type with greater accuracy and perhaps even take on new tasks.

Just last month, the company announced a merger with Stratasys subsidiary MakerBot to create a new desktop 3D printing company that will enable them to accelerate innovation in the desktop 3D printing sector and advance the adoption of additive manufacturing.

Ultimaker Metal Expansion Kit

Metal Expansion Kit

Ultimaker has released the Metal Expansion Kit, designed to expand the company's high performance applications beyond thermoplastics and enable engineers to build the company's high performance applications beyond thermoplastic mechanical stress and heat resistance. Essentially, the kit offers a complete, easy-to-use option for users looking to prepare and print metal parts on their Ultimaker platform.

The kit contains materials that are automatically recognized by the printer via NFC, allowing users to efficiently switch between plastic and metal printing on the same printer. The kit is powered by Cura software and offers a set of special Print Cores to support the metallic filament - Ultrafuse 17-4PH, and an Ultrafuse Support Layer for complete design freedom.

Specifically for this kit, Ultimaker has developed the new Print Core DD 0.4, a wear-resistant extruder for printing abrasive support material. The Ultimaker S5 3D printer does not require constant hardware changes, as the extruders and materials of the new set can be simply replaced.

"This kit provides access to a complete and proven open platform 3D printing workflow that offers competitive quality and turnaround times normally only available with in-house fused metal filament fabrication solutions at a much higher total cost of ownership "," said Gasperini.

The Ultimaker Expansion Kit, BASF Forward AM Ultrafuse® 17-4 PH filament, and Ultrafuse® Support Layer produce strong parts with complex geometries.

The Metal Expansion Kit also gives users access to the Ultimaker 3D Printing Academy, developed in collaboration with BASF's Forward AM division. The academy offers users a centralized and up-to-date knowledge base where they can learn the complete metal 3D printing workflow on Ultimaker platforms. In addition, users will be able to access BASF's order management portal, a network of debinding and sintering services for the subsequent processing of metal parts.

Coinciding with the release of the Metal Expansion Kit in July 2022, Ultimaker is releasing a new version of Cura 5.1 dedicated to MFFF that provides all the features users need to prepare metal parts on the Ultimaker platform.

This unique all-in-one kit from Ultimaker unlocks the power of metal 3D printing on open desktop printers like the Ultimaker S5 and makes MFFF more accessible and affordable,” said Firat Khizal, Head of Metal Systems at BASF Forward AM, “Having all the necessary components and accessories in the kit will make it easier for users to switch between plastic and metal side-to-side printing and guide them through the process step-by-step from A to Z.

Description

Ultimaker 3 Extended: Rugged Desktop 3D Printer

This is a larger build area version of the Ultimaker 3 3D printer. Otherwise, Ultimaker 3 Extended is no different from its "little brother" and pleases users with the same set of useful features. The developers confidently declare that this line of devices can be called desktop 3D printers of the new generation. Looking at the functionality of the devices, there is no doubt about this. So, what attracts users to the Ultimaker 3 Extended 3D printer?

  • Automatic calibration of the working platform. Calibration of the table necessarily precedes the first start of the 3D printer, but can be carried out before each print. The developers of Ultimaker 3 Extended met the needs of users and made this process automatic;
  • The presence of two extruders and a quick transition between them. This printer is equipped with two extruders, thanks to which 3D printing with two colors / types of materials becomes available at the same time. This kit allows you to print with a soluble support material, or create two-color objects. The printer also provides the ability to quickly switch between extruders;
  • Printing on various types of plastics. The Ultimaker 3 Extended uses 3.0mm diameter plastic filament. It is possible to use materials both manufactured by Ultimaker and other companies. The printer supports materials such as ABS, PLA, Neylon, PVA, TPU, PE, PP, PC, Carbon, CPE, Silicon, Proto-pasta, bronze Proto-pasta and many more.
