3ders.org - Ben Heck hacks Cubify Sense 3D scanner (video)

Dec.22, 2013

Hacker and engineer Ben Heck tackles new projects each week. This week Ben takes his use of 3D printers to the next level and tries 3D scanning. He attempts to scan a variety of objects with the Cubify Sense 3D scanner to discover how to get the most out of the device and to create the best prints possible. Ben shows you how to build a rotational device for the scanner and shares what he learns about 3D scanning along the way.

(00:57) For his first test, Ben attempts to keep the scanner in a fixed location and rotate the object he's scanning.

(02:43) Ben has Rusty assist him in his second test, walking the scanner around a fixed object.

(03:23) Ben and Rusty tape the scanner to the laptop to make the scanning process a little easier. Plus, they suspend an object from the ceiling to get a better scan of the bottom of the object.

(05:03) Ben sticks with having the scanner taped to the laptop, but tries scanning an object on a black platform.

(06:35) Ben takes a break from the project to teach you a quick lesson about the STL files that create 3D prints.

(08:02) Ben builds a mount for the scanner the moves around an object in a circle. He uses a white colored background and attempts to scan a mini-arcade machine.

(13:46) Ben checks out the prints he created from his two successful scanning methods and discusses the benefits of the systems he came up with.

Is there another method of scanning a really large object such as a horse's skull for example, besides suspension?

at my school we have a sense 3d scanner and I recommended instead of using the sense software we use the skanect software, and it worked a lot better. Would recommend.

Buy the Skanect 3D Scanning Software By Occipital and get much better results from the Sense. Even on Intel Iris it's easy to scan without losing tracking.

This item is an absolute Piece of Crap! It loses tracking constantly, and it cant even handle scanning an igloo ice chest. I have watched your video on it as well as made the same type of device to connect it too, and it still is unable to scan something that is so simple as a rectangular box!!!!

3D scanning

The 3D scanning is process by which the mesh of a real-world object is created which can be further modified in using the modeling tools. These process can be used for reverse engineering.

3D Scanner

For this week assignment I've used two types of 3D scanner.

  • Kinect sensor
  • 3D Sense

Software Installation

On your first run of the 3D sense scanner I have to install the software and drivers as Windows OS is very sensitive to device drivers and if drivers are not installed then I won't be able to scan anything.

To get hold of the software you can directly Google, direct link of the software download page is mentioned in the references section. After installation I connected 3D sense to the system, first time it took the drivers from dormant state to alive after that scanner is ready to use. Software and drivers does not takes too long to install. Once software installed I activated using the code/password given to me. How to do is mentioned on the 3D sense website.

Before scanning I would like to know about the specifications of the scanner. I wanted to do is to make sure that my scanning object is falls within the limit. As well as I wanted to have some more information about 3D scanning how it is done and what are the majors to be take care of while scanning object.

Actual hardware looks as i shown in the picture attached. There are couple of sensors are there with the scanner. Which detects the depth and tells us about the same.

3D scanner works the principle of triangulation with which it can able to sense the distance between the scanner and the object to be scanned. How scanner works is well explained in link present in references section. The scanner has got it's own sources which throws the bunch of light strips on the object and captures the reflected rays. When these are captures it measures the deflection of light with what is expected to be on the plain surface.

Now I've software and drivers installed and it's time to action. I've tried scanning the various objects such as human portrait, objects like square box, tree leaf, bottle and cloth which is shaped by putting some rigid support inside of the clone.

Scanner actually gets aware of the external geometry of the object but not what is inside it. Right in the 3D sense software is capable for editing the file right on software. To do tweaks you have to enter into the edit mode of the 3D sense software, were you can find out the edit Erase option, which erases the pixel/point coordinates. In the above image you can observer the I've erased some part of the scanned image.

Crop :

It's the tool which can remove the extra pixel that I've scanned. Crop tool is only able to alter only square areas. So, if you want to erase irregular shape then I've to go for the erase tool.

Erase :

This is the tool which can able to remove pixels. It functions same as the crop tool add-on capability is it can edit the irregular shapes as well. To erase pixels I selected the tool and selected and area to remove using click and drag gesture.

Solidify :

As the 3D scanning process is concerned process takes care of exterior shell of the object. The interior of the object remains void, to get rid of void spaces present inside. The scanned object this tool is used. Making solid object is very necessary because if one has to print the object in 3D printer the object the printer will only print very thin layer of which will just represent the exterior and the 3D structure will collapse.

Setup during the 3D scanning

Result of 3D scanner is heavily based on the image processing technique hence it very necessary to maintain good lighting condition while scanning the objects. The scanner is should be properly fitted on the tripod or if not should be hold in hand with stability as much as possible.

I did scanning in well lighted condition, where the sun light is coming into room from windows and bouncing back and forth in room there by eliminated the extra artificial light required.

Observations made

  • If the object which is scanned is too reflective then it will throw more than required light needed for scanning and scanner is not able to understand the features.
  • If the object is transparent then scanner won't be able to see the object.

3DSystems Sense 3D Scanner Review: Specifications, Reviews,

The 3DSystems Sense 3D Scanner is an inexpensive handheld model with outstanding performance. It is no coincidence that we chose her in order to prepare a new interesting review with bright informative photos, because her popularity is growing exponentially. It is ideal for teaching and hobby, design and architecture, and color scanning of large objects, including the human body. According to professionals, this is a productive device that creates high-quality scans. According to beginners, it is an easy-to-understand model with unified characteristics. nine0003

Features of the scanning module 3DSystems Sense

In the segment of manual equipment, the 3D scanner 3Systems Sense can rightly be considered unique. It runs on intuitive software and is equipped with excellent stuffing. Light-sensitive optics capture the slightest changes in the geometry of any object that you work with, while the device does not need direct contact with it.

Design and exterior

It's a paradox, but from a distance this device can be confused with a large stapler, its body is so compact and simple in appearance. Dimension is only 129x128x330 mm, it is comfortable to hold in your hand also due to the minimum weight of 700 g. This is important when scanning large objects with complex reliefs and textures, which this kid captures with enviable accuracy.

Only one cable is used to connect to a laptop, but due to its short length, the PC must be held almost all the time. At the same time, if Windows 10 is installed on any compatible tablet, the problem is automatically fixed.

Key features

An overview of all the performance features of 3DSystems Sense can be found on our 3DMall website, but we cannot ignore the most basic of them:

  • objects with a complex surface (saturated black, shiny, etc.) are best scanned almost closely;
  • within a second the device makes and processes 30 frames; nine0020
  • scanning area is from 200x200x200 to 2000x2000x2000 mm with an accuracy of 1 mm;
  • texture capture rate - 1920x1080 pixels.

Equipment

Equipment 3Systems Sens is concise and standard for models of this class. It includes the scanning module itself, software, a cable for connecting to a laptop or PC, as well as a user manual. The packaging is a simple light-colored box with functional holes to accommodate the scanner and cord. nine0003

Setting operating parameters

At the very first stage, you should install the software, which is expected to have the same name as the scanner itself - 3DSystems Sense. The first launch implies the need to activate the device for security purposes after pre-registration on the official website of the brand. Please note that the equipment is bound to the PC that was used to activate the module; only specialists from the manufacturer can remove it. nine0003

Immediately after starting the program offers to choose one of 3 operating modes:

  • object scanning;
  • human body scan;
  • face scan.

In the first mode, it is imperative that the object is stationary, this is the only way to achieve maximum accuracy of prints. In the process of work, a small problem may arise - additional points may not be added in real time when creating each next frame. In this case, you can try to mount the device on a tripod and save images frame by frame - the scanning speed will decrease slightly, but the quality will be incomparably higher. nine0003

When scanning a face, frames are stitched in real time, while the program signals you how to improve the quality of the process - slow down or stop completely. Body scanning implies the ability to quickly stitch together large scans made from a sufficiently large distance.

Texture can be applied automatically or during scan processing, tools such as square, brush and line are provided for editing the model. nine0003

How a 3D scanner works, what it can do, and whether it can change the world, Nikolay Dubinin, host of the Industry 4.0 YouTube channel, found out

Cybercom is a well-known supplier of 3D printers and 3D scanners in Russia. Not so long ago, the Russian Ministry of Defense turned to the company's employees with a request to create a bust of Admiral Pavel Nakhimov. This is a relatively simple task. But creating a digital twin is a little more difficult.

The first step is to scan the model. A person should relax and take a comfortable position that will allow him not to move for a while. Any movement can lead to the appearance of defects, and the process of their compensation takes a long time. Scanning takes five to ten minutes, resulting in a large number of photographs. The cameras on the scanner are set at different angles, so they capture the slightest distortion of the surface. nine0003

By the way, people with tattoos are ideal for scanning. The scanner guides its route along the markings, and tattoos allow you to get good tracking. The absence of hair is also a plus. Another interesting detail is that you should not scan in plaid clothes. She knocks down the device.

After scanning, the verification process starts. At this point, you can already move. The task of employees is to check how good the result is. For example, to find out if a person did not move. Then two separate scans are aligned point by point. This avoids defects: for example, pants should not come out of the shoulders. nine0003

The second step in the process is getting the figurine itself. First, the gypsum composite is evenly distributed over the form. Then a binder and colored substance is applied. They do this according to the algorithm that the computer sets.

Engineers then use a special vacuum cleaner to remove the figurine from under a thin layer of plaster. It is treated with sandpaper and wax. Then the model acquires density, saturation and color depth. The result is a digital figure of a person - almost indistinguishable from the real one. Digital twins allow people to immortalize themselves as they were at the time of the shooting. nine0003

There are already several types of 3D scanners.
