Nokia Releases Files for 3-D Printing Your Own Phone Case

Nokia has opened its arms to 3-D printing with the release of printable design files and instructions for making your own Nokia phone case — and customizing it however you wish.

The mobile phone giant announced the new endeavor today, which gives Creative Commons-licensed access to the printable files for the Lumia 820's shell. It's the largest affirmation of 3-D printing by a major corporation thus far, bringing the world of on-demand product generation and customization one step closer to the desktops of consumers worldwide. That is, to the desktops of those who have printers so far.

In Nokia's Conversations blog, community and development marketing manager John Kneeland discusses the launch of the project. "We are going to release 3D templates, case specs, recommended materials and best practices—everything someone versed in 3D printing needs to print their own custom Lumia 820 case," he explains. "We refer to these files and documents collectively as a 3D-printing Development Kit, or 3DK for short."

The files, in standard 3-D printer formats, are available on the site in three versions of the rendering: two STL options and one in STP. The company also launched a 3-D printing Wiki with material and software suggestions, and possible projects that consumers could design into these CAD files, such as built-in SIM card holders and bike mounts.

There may be more to come from Nokia in this space as well. "In the future, I envision wildly more modular and customizable phones," Kneeland says. "Perhaps in addition to our own beautifully designed phones, we could sell some kind of phone template, and entrepreneurs the world over could build a local business on building phones precisely tailored to the needs of his or her local community."

While the printing community has large libraries of user-generated, printable files hosted on sites like Shapeways and Thingiverse, there has been little corporate involvement in the arena.

Last year, Swedish synthesizer manufacturer Teenage Engineering released the design files for replacement knobs and dials for its popular OP-1 synth keyboard, sharing their designs through Shapeways. And while companies like Apple release the design specifications for its products to third-party case makers, no companies of Nokia's stature have launched a 3-D printing initiative with the actual CAD files for their products.

Nokia's project could lead to other manufacturers following suit, from car manufacturers to sporting good makers to anything in between. And while there will undoubtedly be discussion about piracy, some feel that offering the files for simple products like cases and knobs is beneficial to a company by moving a low-revenue product out of their supply chain and into the hands of the consumer.

3D printing and Nokia Lumia 820 We, in turn, also prepared material on this topic, namely, an interview with the person who made this project possible.

From time to time, technologies appear that have great potential and dramatically change our lives. So it happened with the Internet, the same thing happened with the advent of mobile phones. It looks like 3D printing technology could repeat this success and join this list. To learn more about this innovative technology and how Nokia might use it in the future, we spoke with John Kneeland, Developer and Community Manager based in Silicon Valley.

— John, what exactly is the Lumia 820 3D printing project and what makes it so special?

- Our community 3D printing project is a simple concept with exciting perspectives. Our Lumia 820 has a removable case that can be replaced with branded cases in other colors, cases with additional shock and dust resistance, and cases with the ability to wirelessly charge your phone.
These cases are a great addition for the vast majority of Lumia 820 buyers. In addition, we are going to post 3D printing templates, specs, and material recommendations in case someone with a background in 3D printing wants to print their own Lumia 820 case. Together we call the 3D Printing Development Kit, or 3DK (3D Printing Development Kit) for short.

Nokia is the first company to embrace the 3D printing community and continues to be the leading phone company in this exciting field.

I look at it as a legacy of the granddaddy of customizable phones, the Nokia 5110 with its colorful collection of interchangeable faceplates. I still remember using his version for the US market, the Nokia 5120.

— How else is Nokia using 3D printing in manufacturing, and what additional opportunities do you see for mobile technologies now and in the future?

- Internally, this helps us prototype faster to, in Stephen Elop's words, "boost Nokia's clock speed." In the future, I see much more modular and customizable phones. Perhaps, in addition to our own beautifully crafted phones, we could sell some kind of phone templates, and entrepreneurs around the world could create a local business by tailoring phones to the needs of the local market. Want a waterproof, glow-in-the-dark phone with a bottle opener and a solar battery? Someone else can do it for you, or you can do it yourself.

— Can you tell us what your day-to-day work is and how it relates to 3D printing?

- In our Developer Relations team, we are trying to build an ecosystem around Nokia Lumia smartphones. Generally speaking, our team is divided into two sections: "depth" (big brands like Angry Birds, ESPN, Red Bull) and "reach" (indie projects, hobbyists, and perhaps the big apps of tomorrow). I specialize in "reach" apps, which inspire me a lot more because I help entrepreneurs bring their ideas to life. But a rich, vibrant ecosystem isn't just about apps and services; it's also the hardware—things that enhance and personalize your phone experience. Since their release needs mass production (as well as a large investment in it), the accessory development ecosystem has always been strictly the business of the “depth” team. But now 3D printing allows anyone to start making their own accessories!

- 3D printing technology is something that many people have heard about, but few people imagine how it looks like in reality. How did you feel the first time you saw her in action?

— When I first saw 3D printing in action, I felt that perhaps this is how people felt when they first saw a steam engine. The earliest steam engines were expensive, capricious and extremely limited in their capabilities. But in these cumbersome mechanisms, some saw great potential to change everything. Any mass invention began with a mere shadow of what it could become. Today we can only print cases in one or two materials and the machines are limited in what they can produce, but that in itself is already very inspiring and there will be more in the future.

- Organizers of this year's 3D Print Show in London said it was close to changing the world the way the Internet changed it in the 90s. Do you believe in this deception, and if so, why?

I think this hoax has a real basis and 3D printing is indeed a Very Big Business. I don't think it's an exaggeration to call it a continuation of the industrial revolution. Yes, it may take a little longer than some people think, and it may be frustrating for people. This is now an enthusiastic endeavor, and this is what Nokia is currently focusing on with its community work.

- If you could 3D print anything, what would it be?

- An Angry Birds level the size of a house!

This is a very promising development of the idea of customizing your own phone. Previously, it was possible to use either accessories released by the manufacturer, or, as in the Nokia 3200, to change pictures under a transparent case. Vinyl stickers came later. Then - "bumper" covers, which, unfortunately, significantly increase the size of the device. Now, with the advent of 3D printing technology, you can add a number of chips not provided by the manufacturer that you need.

Here are a few ideas to add to your phone case:

• Built-in belt or loop;
• Points for connecting photo accessories;
• Embossed body texture to prevent slipping;
• Attachment for winding the headset;
• Fastening in a car;
• Bicycle mount;
• The holder for a backpack;
• Slot for storing an additional SIM card or memory card.

You can learn more about the project in the developer's wiki.

When the article was already ready for publication, the first photos of the finished case appeared, created on the Replicator 2 Desktop 3D Printer from the files presented above.
