A thin beam sparkles across the surface, as if a fiery phoenix is reborn from the ashes. But this, of course, is not ashes, but metal powder, and not a bird, but a part for an important node, instead of a nest - a camera of a 3D printer for metal. So no magic - solid science and technology.

How products are printed in a 3D printer:
Powder is loaded into the first platform, a working plate is installed on the second one, on which the part will be grown. The third platform is for collecting excess powder.
The powder is applied with a special knife.
Powder layer, for example for stainless steel - 0.02 mm, i.e. 20 microns, for aluminum - 30 microns.
After applying the powder, the laser turns on and, according to a given program, sinters all the details into a layer. nine0006
Selective laser sintering was developed and patented back in the mid-80s of the last century, but 3D printers have only been actively used in the last 10 years. Models, prototypes of models, and even implants are made from such a polymer powder. 3D printing of metal parts is less common, although one of the first prospects for this technology in the West was appreciated by aircraft manufacturers, and in Russia by nuclear scientists.
Before starting printing, the 3D printer chamber is filled with argon gas. It is needed to prevent the appearance of oxides and nitrides in the structure of the part. Each metal has its own melting point. For example, for aluminum, the beam must heat the powder to 660 degrees, and for titanium, to 1800.
In addition, oxygen is displaced from the chamber with argon, its content should not exceed 0.1% for the entire volume of the product. Metal powder at such high temperatures can easily flare up.
The capabilities of 3D printers are limited only by the size of the camera - most often the printing parameters do not exceed 40 cm in length, width and height of the product. But this is quite enough.

“While in the West there are about 2.5 thousand such 3D printers for metal, in Russia only about 20 imported systems for metal powders have been purchased so far,” explains Oleg Elistratov , Deputy General Director of the Ural Electrochemical Plant for the development of non-nuclear business.

The Russian 3D printer will be no worse, and in some places even better than Western counterparts. 90% of the system will consist of components made in Russia, by the end of this year a test bench will appear for debugging the main functions of the mechanism, as well as working out algorithms for growing products directly. TVEL enterprises are already deciding which parts can potentially be made in a progressive way, and which ones are better in the old fashioned way. All 20 machines in Russia run on imported powders. In most cases, you cannot use any other powder on these machines, they are immediately voided from the warranty.
This is not a good situation, because we are thus in a very large import dependence. At the same time, prices for stainless steel powders supplied to Russia are twice as high as those sold abroad. For example, a powder based on nickel and chromium costs about 100–150 euros per kilogram from a Western manufacturer, and in Russia this handful of metal will already cost 500 euros! But this problem was also solved in the Urals. For the Ural Electrochemical Plant and its enterprises, powder metallurgy is not new. For example, at the plant of electrochemical converters, powders were used to produce filters for gaseous diffusion of uranium, for isotope separation, as well as for solders and surface spraying.
Sheikhali Sheikhaliyev, General Director of Spray Systems and Technologies LLC, has been dealing with metal powders for more than 30 years and received dozens of patents for his developments. Systems improved according to Sheikhaliyev's technologies operate in the UK and Japan.
Now its primary task is the Russian installation for the production of fine special powders. nine0006
Sheykhaliev's installation already today makes it possible to obtain fine powders of aluminum alloys less than 50 microns. This is a good result. The installation is experimental and allows spraying only 5–10 kg of the alloy. An industrial installation exists so far only in the form of a computer model. The principle of operation is not complicated: as soon as the melt begins to be poured into the crucible of the industrial funnel, gas is supplied under a pressure of 30 atmospheres - nitrogen or argon, which literally breaks the metal stream into dust. Today, Sheikhaliyev's powders are meticulously studied in laboratories, because it is they who will gradually replace imported analogues. The results for aluminum alloys - aluminum-silicon, aluminum-magnesium are already very good, high-temperature melts - that is, steels - are next in line.
Each particle should be a perfect spherical shape - this allows them to better fit together and sinter correctly during printing. Also in the laboratory they look at the chemical composition, check the surface and internal porosity, fluidity, the presence of satellites - and all this on the microballoons that make up the powder, balls that the human eye cannot even distinguish. nine0006
It is planned to build a production unit for the production of powders on the basis of the Ural Electrochemical Plant. Prototypes are already being tested in a 3D printer, however, while this is German equipment, specialists from the Russian engineering center had to buy an option to use their raw materials.
The Russian 3D printer will appear already in 2017, and it will differ significantly from existing foreign models in terms of tactical and technical indicators: its performance will definitely be higher, and besides, closed codes are used in imported machines, so it is often impossible to clearly determine the composition of the part and understand how it is made.
