Griffin 3D Launches Large Delta 3D Printer and Two Smaller Printers Via Kickstarter - 3DPrint.com

Delta 3D printers are simple, easy to use, and most importantly have the ability to scale up quite well and affordably, as we have seen with the SeeMeCNC giant PartDaddy 3D printer. This style of printer functions using the delta robot concept, a robotic setup which has been used within the packaging industry for years. The technology is well known, easy to fix, and incredibly enjoyable to watch in action.

While the majority of 3D printers we see on the market today are based on a Cartesian coordinate system design, delta printers are also slowly catching on. One startup company, based in St. Louis, Missouri, called Griffin 3D is trying to bring to market an entire series of delta 3D printers via a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign.

The Griffin Pro Series, is made up of three printers, all of different sizes, allowing the company to cater to the entire market. The printers include the Griffin Mini, Griffin Pro, and the largest of the bunch, the Griffin Pro XL. All three machines feature the same general specifications which include the following:

Print Speed:: Up to 300mm/s
Printer Movement Speed: Up to 500mm/s
Print Resolution: 20 microns
Nozzle Diameter: 0. 4mm
Electronics: Azteeg X5 Mini
Firmware: Smoothieware
Key Features: 2mm Thick Gorilla Glass Bed, Optical End Stops, Carbon Fiber Rods, Viki 2 LCD Screen, Force Sensing Resistors, Custom Extruder Pulley, Semi-Auto Calibration (within 3 minutes)

The only major differences between the three printers, are the build volumes, the sizes, and the prices, which are listed below:

Griffin Mini

Printer Size: 11 in Triangular x 16 in height
Build Size: 6.8 in diameter x 6 in height (170mm diameter x 152.4mm)
Price on Kickstarter: Between $700 – $950 (depends on how assembled it is and when you order)

Griffin Pro

Printer Size: 14.5 in Triangular x 23.5 in height
11.8 in diameter x 10 in height (300mm diameter x 254mm)
Price on Kickstarter: Between $850 – $1050 (depends on how assembled it is and when you order)

Griffin Pro XL

Printer Size: 22. 25 in Triangular x 40 in height
18 in diameter x 18 in height (457.2mm diameter x 457.2mm)
Price on Kickstarter: Between $950 – $1200 (depends on how assembled it is and when you order)

The company is looking to raise $30,000 in order to begin full scale production of these three machines. The Kickstarter campaign will run from now until September 17th, and the first printers, as well as kits should begin shipping sometime in October.

Additions February 2022 - Modix Large 3D Printers

Modix is proud to introduce the new Griffin printhead. The new print head consists of a custom Bondtech extruder (based on the BMG model) and a new hot end developed by Modix. The new design consists of the following improvements:

Higher flow rate and higher printing temperature: The new and more powerful extruder features a dual drive system that picks up filament from both sides. The thermal block is made of nickel-plated copper for faster heat transfer and compatibility with higher printing temperatures. The design includes Slice Engineering's advanced bimetal thermal break, which expands the melt zone inside the fuser, as it is also primarily made of copper. In addition, the upgraded PT-1000 temperature sensor will allow printing at higher temperatures up to 500°C. An optional water-based hot end cooler will also improve printability in hot environments (available at a later stage). The hot end components are rated for 500°C and have so far been tested by printing at temperatures up to 340°C.

Higher reliability: Large-scale 3D printing typically runs the risk of scratching or hitting the printhead on thicker models, causing thermal breaks to bend or break. The new print head provides a rigid mounting of the fuser, which is naturally more reliable and reduces the number of such situations. The main reason for this is that now the heat block is attached on three sides, and not just on one. With this extra mount, it can withstand a much stronger impact. The longer E3D Super Volcano can also be attached to a hard mount using a dedicated adapter.

Improved user interface: The new printhead design makes changing nozzles much easier and even allows you to quickly replace the entire filament melting subsystem. The rigid mounting of the fuser allows nozzles to be changed with one hand, making it even easier to check nozzles of different diameters.

Easy Exchange: The design of the mounting bracket and Slice Engineering thermal break D-bar allows users to slide in and out the entire filament melting subsystem with ease. This will allow users to allocate full customization to a specific filament type. those. leave one setup for abrasive carbon filler and another for prototyping with PLA.

Compact design: The new design retains the benefits of a compact design that maintains high z travel and is compatible with a wide range of E3D Volcano tips in a variety of sizes and materials.

Smart: The new printhead allows automatic calibration of the Z offset between the nozzle and the BL Touch sensor.
