biography

Andrew Alan Asher Auernheimer was born in Arkansas. According to Auernheimer's mother, in an interview with Newsweek magazine about her son's neo-Nazi activities, he is of various backgrounds, including Jewish and Native Americans. In its prisoner database, the Federal Bureau of Prisons classifies him as a racial "Indian of America".

crack (computer)

Auernheimer claimed responsibility for disrupting Amazon in April 2009 when several books on homosexuality were classified as pornographic. Amazon said that Auernheimer was not responsible for the incident. But well before the Amazon incident, his profile had been published by many newspapers arguing him or interested in his selective activities, including New York Times , in which he claimed to be a member of the of the hacker organization under the name " organization. " and bringing in an annual income of ten million dollars. He even claimed to be the owner of the Rolls-Royce Phantom. After the publication of this article, Auernheimer's comments about the hacks became a popular commodity among journalists. Gawker published article about the Sarah Palin email hack (in) and placed Auernheimer's comment at the head of the article.

AT&T information system breach

Auernheimer is a member of a group of computer security experts known as Goatse Security, and is responsible for publishing security breaches on the AT&T information system; its use allowed thousands of email addresses of iPad users to be hacked. The Goatse community revealed a flaw in Gawkers' media after informing AT&T and posting details of 114,000 iPad users, including celebrities, with the US government and the US military. The actions of this group are fueling the debate about the disclosure of security vulnerabilities. Auernheimer assures that the methods used by his group are "commonplace" in the industry, he says: "We tried to be good guys. " Jennifer Granik (in) (Electronic Frontier Foundation) also defended the strategy used by Goatse Security.

The FBI then launched an investigation into the incident. A criminal case has been officially opened. .

Shortly after the investigation began, Auernheimer's home was raided by the FBI and local police. The FBI search was motivated by a breach of the AT&T information system, but Auernheimer was arrested for drug possession. Cocaine, ecstasy, LSD, and pharmaceuticals were found in Auernheimer's possession while executing a search warrant linked to AT&T, police said. He will then be released on $3,160 bail pending trial. After being released on bail, he violated his obligation to remain silent to protest what he sees as a violation of his civil rights. In particular, he challenged the lawfulness of the search and the inability to avail himself of state legal aid. He also requested donations through PayPal to cover legal costs.

On , all drug charges against him were immediately dropped following his arrest by federal authorities. The Justice Department announced his indictment for two counts of conspiracy to gain access to a computer without authorization and fraud. Although his co-defendant, Daniel Spitler, was soon released on bail, he was initially refused bail due to his status as a job seeker and lack of family support, which could potentially lead to him. Hosta before finally fixed end up to $50,000. Weev will be incarcerated in federal prison (at) Oklahoma City at . He was released on bail at , but no indictment has yet been filed with the court.

Trial and imprisonment

In , a New Jersey federal court found Auernheimer guilty of identity theft and conspiracy to gain unauthorized access to a computer. At , he was sentenced to 41 months in prison. In addition, he and his co-defendant Daniel Spitler will have to pay $73,000 in damages to AT&T. Incarcerated at Allenwood Low, Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania, Auernheimer is appealing.

The trial and imprisonment of the man "considered by some to be the most famous of the trolls" (according to CNN) is receiving some media coverage in the United States, and he finds support from several individuals, associations, and the media in the field. technology. Thus, a movement is created on the Internet to demand his release, associated with the slogan "Free weev" (i.e. "Libérez weev" in French) and the website freeweev.info . He gives an interview to website HuffPost , Australian television channel SBS, and tech news site TechCrunch , which gives him an honorary Crunchie Award. Rapper Childish Gambino (a.k.a. Donald Glover) dedicates the track Life: The Biggest Troll [Andrew Auernheimer] to him at the conclusion of his album Because the Internet . In his appeal, Auernheimer is assisted by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, law professor Orin Kerr (in) and the Mozilla Foundation to ensure his defense.

Release

At , the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit overturns Auernheimer's conviction. Indeed, the appellate court held that the conviction of Auernheimer, a native of Arkansas, in New Jersey federal court on facts relating to data held on AT&T servers in Texas and Georgia constituted a flaw in the law. Auernheimer is released immediately.

Life after prison

Some time after his release from prison, Auernheimer left the United States. Since then he has lived in Lebanon, Ukraine and Transnistria. AT , he posts an article on The Daily Stormer , a white supremacy website, where he talks about his experience in federal prison. In particular, he shares his views of supremacists and neo-Nazism, illustrating the article with a photograph of him wearing an impressive swastika tattoo on his chest.

In 2015, he did about him by revealing on Twitter the personal information and sexual preferences of many people (including many US officials), this information from the dating site Adult FriendFinder database (in) . Auernheimer explains that he targeted US officials as a priority "because they are the easiest to be ashamed of."

Gradually he moved closer to the American far-right alt-right movement and strengthened his relationship with the Daily Stormer and its founder Andrew Anglin, becoming the website's webmaster and technical expert. He himself publishes several anti-Semitic articles on the site. In 2016, he used his hacking skills to hack into fax machines and printers at several universities in the United States, printing swastika-covered flyers remotely to promote The Daily Stormer . In the same year, he participated in a campaign of anti-Semitic persecution of a Jewish journalist.

Political opinions, criticism and controversy

Auernheimer in 2010.

Weevil's actions are sometimes described as an expression of hacktivism. Australian columnist Emma Jane (in) called him a "hacktivist celebrity". Auernheimer defended unpopular positions even when they met with strong resistance. He supported the highly satirical Encyclopedia Dramatica in an interview with Ninemsn , which was described as "quite brilliant" in the Register article on Australian Internet censorship.

Auernheimer has published a number of podcasts and blogs LiveJournal, where he discusses racial and cultural issues. Online, he was familiar with sexist, racist, and anti-Semitic rants that were long interpreted in the community as playful provocations or trolling , as Fox News called him "provocative and witty" and the editor of 9 magazine0009 Forbes compared it to Shakespeare's "Puck". This latter interpretation is the subject of controversy with the author of the monthly Atlantic who finds 's description of "Puck" "surprisingly generous". Also, in 2010, when the computer security world was rocked by the FBI's arrest of Auernheimer, Philip Elmer-DeWitt (in) called him "the worst of the hackers" in a column written for Fortune magazine, recalling that Auernheimer was the author of the podcast iProphet , a series of video sermons in which Auernheimer, known as "i-Prophet", was angry at blacks and the "Zionist media". Auernheimer then defended himself against any racism or antisemitism by justifying himself by trolling ; according to a Goatse Security employee and Gawker's portrait, , he could claim to be of Jewish origin (this claim would be repeated by his mother in an interview with Newsweek ).

In 2014, a few months after his release from prison, he published an article on the supremacist website The Daily Stormer, in which again demonstrated superiority and anti-Semitic stances by illustrating an article with a photo of himself with a swastika tattoo. . His lawyer, Thor Ekeland, believes that if he already showed signs of anti-Semitic beliefs, then it would be in prison that he would “radicalize”. Auernheimer then published other articles in Daily Stormer (of which he is the webmaster), in which he calls, among other things, for the killing of Jews and participation in far-right political computer attacks. He has since been called a "neo-Nazi" in publications such as The Atlantic , Newsweek or Le Monde , and American Anti-Racist Association Southern Poverty Law Center .
