Cube Companion made of plastic.
Small but true friend =) Hello Stopgame. I've been working with 3D printers for a while now and decided to treat myself and maybe someone else a little with a couple of fun toys.
I love Portal very much and have deep feelings for the Companion Cube. He is loyal, not intrusive and will always substitute his strong, weighted shoulder. A true friend, but those who have played already know what he is. There is a catch - it is virtual. And I found on the very famous site Thingiverse.com a kit for self-assembly of a friend and companion. nine0003
Based on one of the projects and after a very tiny modification (slightly added thickness to some details).
To turn zeros and ones into pieces of plastic, I used the services of the Makerbot Replicator 2 printer, which I have at work in 4 copies. In total, it takes about 6-7 hours to print spare parts, if you print in turn on one, all spare parts. But on 4 machines, I printed two and a half sets of parts in 4 hours. 4 hours require the most corner sections, so during this time I managed to print a backlog for 2 more cubes. nine0003
Assembly is quite simple, the main thing is to prepare for the fact that wire cutters and a knife will be needed very often - a lot of snot after printing, support for overhanging elements and other printing flaws.
Those big parts are the tops of the cube and they take 4 hours to print. It can be faster, but then it will look disgustingly disgusting, and even break during assembly.
Closer details. You can clearly see why a knife and wire cutters are needed here. I am glad that the preparation takes at least 10 minutes. We are careful when working with sharp objects =)
And now the assembly. I am working in stages. First I put gray sections on the corners. They serve as an imitation of the wall of the cube and a kind of retainer that holds all the parts in place.
In my case, they required effort to assemble. Although, looking ahead, I’ll say that here the whole “power” assembly and the model carpet in my pictures are not only for the entourage - it’s better to rest against it than against the table.
Inserting hearts is a rather interesting step. On the one hand - what is difficult to put one thing into another? But the minimum gaps and nifigovye errors in size after printing. In general, I made considerable efforts to shove almost shove. But there is a plus in this - it is held super-reliably, it is impossible to separate these two figulins without damaging them. Probably it was worth slightly increasing the gaps, but ... how to make a companion without sweating at least a little? (Yes, I justify my laziness). nine0003
Next, we begin to collect the corners of the cube. We take a small white edge and insert it with latches into the holes in the corners / tops of the cube. A little more brute physical strength and the faces of the cube are assembled.
The next step is to add small faces to the already assembled large face. Yes, power is also needed. And then, we start assembling the side. We insert the heart into the larger half, fill the pink pins into the grooves on the edges and snap the edge with force. The lid is ready. For further assembly, repeat this step. nine0003
Finishing stage, important and responsible. Installing small_edges on one of the covers. Then you need to insert hearts and gain strength and patience. Next, the crucial moment is to collect the cube. This is a difficult moment, because you need to carefully monitor that all the pink pins fall into the grooves. Well, then press hard, swear a little and the Companion Cube is ready!
That's all. It takes me about 20-40 minutes to assemble. I have accumulated a few cubes, some have a slightly different color and plastic manufacturer, others have different print settings or even the printer itself (one cube was printed on Witbox2, but I don’t remember which =) ). nine0005

Ruslan Prisekin 3310 models for 3D printer calibration. Set up your printer
Before you start printing on a 3D printer, you need to test it. For this, special models are most often used to diagnose and calibrate the device. Next, we will list the top 10 models for calibration, in our opinion. nine0005
3D Benchy
Among all 3D printing tests, the flagship is 3D Benchy. This model is a boat that can test everything from protrusions to extrusion. If you want to test your 3D printer, then the benches will help you determine the optimal settings for the ideal result. On Thingiverse, more than three thousand users posted photos with their samples, and the boat itself was printed by more than a hundred machines and no fewer materials.

All-In-One
A very interesting model, which is called “all-in-one”. Everything is presented in the model: canopy, bridge, string, temperature and belt tension test, extrusion. This is an ideal model for testing the device at several levels at once. A manual is included with the model to help you troubleshoot any issues you find. On Thingiverse, more than 75 users have posted test results on different 3D printers and different materials. nine0005

NEW model Autodesk
This is a new model, or rather not even a model, but a whole procedure that will allow 3D printer manufacturers to show all the capabilities of devices to Kickstarter supporters. And of course, calibrate. The test was developed by Andreas Bastian and is a consolidated STL file that is able to test the system for the following indicators:
- authorization;
- alignment;
- precision;
- bridge, etc.
The model has it all. For example, if the 3D printer is set up well, then the horizontal function will be performed with a minimum of problems.

PolyPearl Tower
If you want to test curves, cuts, bridges, cuts, then this model can be a great solution. In the description for this test model, the name "torture tower with a twist" appears. It is worth trying to use it for calibration. nine0005
