How I got into 3D printing when I wanted to create a board game
Hello everyone!
In this article I will describe my experience in designing a desktop, as well as show the results so far.
So, in 2018, I, young and naive, just left the team that was developing my own wargame with miniatures. In my head there were developments on my own project, but for now the wind was walking in my wallet.
From 2018 to 2019, he was actively working on updating hardware for the computer, so that it was comfortable to draw and 3dash, otherwise the old laptop could no longer pull out.
In parallel with this out of the corner of my eye and out of the corner of my ear, I heard that the first Photons from Enikubik had appeared somewhere. However, my first printer was Sparkmaker, not even bought on Aliexpress. nine0003

Matrix resolution 720p, the first calibrations, the first screen fill, the first interchangeable matrix... I do not regret anything, in fact, all the beginner's jambs were worked out on it. And the desire to know the world of 3D printing better helped me get a job at a company that was engaged in this 3D printing, although I did not work there for a long time.
After that I bought a Photon S and then, as they say, it started. I printed miniatures, a lot, master-deli for casting into silicone, only mastered 3D modeling indirectly. Bought an Ender 3Pro in July 2020. After minor modifications (installing a direct extruder, a second Z axis, changing the board, switching to glass), we can say that the fleet of printers for prototyping the board game was ready.

In parallel with the described processes, I was thinking about the setting of my game.
In short: fantasy post-apocalypse with a world that crumbled into fragments hanging in the air in the Void. The few survivors in the two (so far) factions, master the new world, moving on void ships.
Initially did character design.
And then ships.
At the beginning of 2021, I met a person who was inspired by the concepts and wrote the first iteration of the rules. A little later, a friend joined us, who now took over the testing of the rules. With this composition, we appeared in Belgorod at the festival of board games. I made the very first models for the presentation about a week before the trip, and separated from the supports and assembled in less than a day. nine0003

Further - more. During several waves of alpha testing, the size of hexes has changed (as it turns out later - one to one with BattleTech), the rules of the factions have changed, and most importantly, the models have changed!
All figurines and supports were printed and reprinted by myself.
Here, Ender 3Pro, in conjunction with Photon, worked out 120%, prototyped what was needed and how it was needed. The shoals of modeling could be corrected very quickly, as well as the missing ones could be printed. Problems with logistics? No, have not heard. nine0003
By the end of the summer, we arrived at Gakko 13 with an almost finished prototype, however, taking into account the criticism of the appearance of one of the factions, a series of alterations began.

In the winter of 2021-22, we roll out the latest versions of the ships.

And then, looking at the prices, I thought that it would be nice to transfer the printing of ships from photopolymer to plastic, it would be cheaper. It used to be that I had white resin, which I got for 1 kopeck, but now that's it, the freebie is over.
At the same time, two fractions can be distinguished by color.
All ship and translucent support models were printed with eSun PLA, nozzle 0.2, layer 0.1 table 60, nozzle 190 on Ender 3Pro. Green hexes - PETG, nozzle 0.4, layer 0.2 temp. 210\70, black PLA SEM. For conditionally mass production of 10 test kits (according to the plan), 3D printing looks very cheap and attractive. nine0003
What next? Firstly, I managed to get Anycubic Photon Mono 4k at a good price for printing master models of ships and infantry miniatures in casting. When I used to print master models of miniatures, I realized that 3D printing can replace cast resin in terms of price / quality ratio is very conditional - the viscosity is not the same, the strength of the resin is higher than that of the photopolymer (perhaps I made a mistake in the polymerization processes, but when ever fired from a technologist’s cannon at a printed miniature?). Secondly, elements such as hexes accompanying ships will be printed on a 3D printer, which will potentially reduce the cost of producing one set and positively affect the final price for the consumer.
Unless, as a result, it turns out that cutting the same hexes from wood will not be even cheaper. There are also plans to master the normal 3D sculpture of infantry miniatures, so far the progress in this direction is modest. nine0003
In summary: the desire to create a board game and make its development/prototyping as cheap as possible pushed me into the world of 3D printing and artistic 3D modeling. So far, full-fledged expenses for the project are hiring a 3D modeler for Unia ships and tickets to Belgorod and back to Moscow. Plastic paid off due to orders from outside, I printed already on its remnants. The ship models of Chronograd are all on me. Print design is also on me, profile education graphic designer. Why the price of the prototyping issue turned out to be a key factor: in the past board game project, with investments greater than I spent on the purchase of all printers, as a result, they were not even able to assemble a coherent prototype - each edit of the 3D model ate a significant part of the modest budget, at some point we were thinking of switching to ordering hand-sculpted miniatures.
