While sci-fi fans get ready for the premiere of Ghost in the Shell, DIYers can check out these gorgeous animatronic robogeisha masks!
A new film adaptation based on the classic manga was directed by Rupert Sanders, who wanted to make the atmosphere of the digital dystopia as tangible as possible.
Although there will be a lot of CGI in the film, great attention was paid to the creation of colorful and - let's not be afraid of this word - high-tech props.
One of the most striking examples is the robo-geisha masks made by the New Zealand studio Weta Workshop, which previously worked on the Lord of the Rings trilogy. According to co-founder and CEO Richard Taylor, various technologies have been used in the manufacture of masks, including 3D printing.
Many of the components were modeled from the actress's scans for maximum convenience, and some were either printed off the shelf or as master patterns for mold making.
Japanese actress Raila Fukushima with a very expressive appearance will portray the cyber killer. The actress's face was scanned, and the digital model served as the basis for a 3D model of the props. A prototype mask was printed for fitting, but some 3D printed details, such as hair, were included in the finished props.
One of the robotic geisha masks is also equipped with a characteristic opening face that hides the “mechanical stuffing”.
