2. Terminator T-1000 3D Model

T-1000 was first introduced in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. This character was the antagonist of several other chapters as well, including Genisys and Battle Across Time.

I wanted a skull ashtray, but got a terminator ashtray. And it turned out much better than I imagined. With this project, I came to the conclusion that it is not necessary to puff on the Compass 3D program in an attempt to invent a unique model. Sometimes you can deviate from your ideas for the benefit of beauty and style. Although the original idea - to create a functional ashtray - was realized. I'll tell you more about everything.

Where did the idea for the ashtray come from

I don't smoke, but I decided to get into modeling the ashtray as it's the next step in complexity for me (after napkin holders and glasses). As a practical person, I invented a functional ashtray in my head. By design, they are all the same, and people who smoke now and then lose / leave / look for their packs, lighters, matches. I thought, why not make such an ashtray so that everything lies neatly in one place?

The task for modeling was complicated by the fact that the object will be with a skull - the topic seems to be relevant, although I myself do not burn with love for them. I don’t need such a thing at home, I’ll have to give it to someone, so I left my own taste preferences in the background. But the girlfriend really likes skulls and all that.

How I developed my own design

I already have experience in Compass 3D. Thinking through the frame part was not difficult. As usual, I drew a diagram, determined the dimensions. True, the dimensions were determined approximate, because there were no packs at hand to accurately measure their length, width, height.

But the idea was this: a round ashtray on top of the top of the skull. At the bottom there is a compartment for packs - it was assumed that it would even be possible to fit 2 there. Still need a place for a lighter. For her, she came up with the idea of making a compartment on the side in the form of a pocket, and preferably on both sides. Well, on the very cup of the ashtray there should be recesses in order to put an unextinguished or half-smoked cigarette. A lid would also be nice.

At first I thought of cutting the skull itself out of the drawing with a vector, attaching it to the front panel and squeezing out the volumes. Then I thought about it and decided that it would look too simple. It’s better to cut out the “face” of the skull from the finished model, since I’m still far from sculptural design figures. Yes, and I doubt whether it is possible to make such a thing in Compass at all. Birth of the terminator ashtray

While looking through suitable models, I came across a very cool and interesting terminator figure. And then I thought…why not? The skull is basically a hackneyed topic... and this terminator... it looks really cool.

Downloaded. I must say right away that the model is very complex and demanding on computer resources. I turned it over, looked - it’s just possible to cut out the “face”. But then I see - yes, this is an almost ready-made ashtray for my idea! And the dimensions are almost perfect! In the end, it was decided to simply redo this model. This experience is also useful, and to be honest, they helped me with this. In the process, I learned new tricks in Compass.

Stages of conversion :

1. Cut out the main volume, left the stand and the front part.

2. We lengthened the extrusion element to fit our dimensions so that in the final version nothing would go beyond the stand. Then we closed the area under the bowl with an element of rotation. We extended the extrusion to the desired size down at an angle so that the bowl does not fall through.

3. Drawn sides 10 mm high with a wall thickness of 2 mm.

4. Next in the assembly, we created the bowl part. It, unfortunately, is not round, but oval. Here, in principle, it is easy to model. The depth of the walls to the bottom = 1.5 cm. Then the lower part was lengthened to fit into the hole on the top of the terminator. I didn't even have to come up with any side supports. Well, they decided to make one notch, since the bowl turned out to be small and two cigarettes would not fit in there. Here's what happened in the end.

This model was printed for a long time. Main body - 16 hours (on PLA plastic at a speed of 30-45 mm / s), bowl - 3 hours (on ABS plastic). But the result is worth it. Forced supports were set in the slicer.

The ashtray-terminator looks very cool live, it's impossible to convey in the photo.

To get pictures in more or less normal quality, I took pictures on the front camera of the phone, I have it better. Therefore, the inscription “T-800” was reflected incorrectly.

Unexpectedly, there was even a place for a lighter. She fit into the hole perfectly.

I painted the eyes with acrylic paint in 2 layers.

In fairness, not forgetting my main task - to learn to model in 3D Compass, I nevertheless created the originally conceived design. But she didn’t even finish it - it can’t be compared with the beauty that turned out.

About security

The model certainly looks good, and I would even feel sorry for using it as an ashtray. Here the question is this - the plastic is fusible and it is unsafe to shake off the ashes there directly or leave cigarettes. You can solve the problem with the help of plaster, although the view, it seems to me, will no longer be the same. They promised me to print out the outline for the ebb with plastic (there is such a function in the slicer) and make exactly the same bowl from plaster. Then it can be sanded and painted with black paint. And then everything will be fine with security.

Results of the project

I will not hide it, not only I liked this model, but also everyone who saw it. Moreover, for the terminator they have already come up with a bunch of alterations. Someone in the office looked and said: “Yes, this is a pencil box!”. But the original is just made as an organizer. And my phone fits perfectly into this recess on the top of the head - a good stand.

The only thing was an unfortunate mistake was made during printing - they forgot to reduce the temperature, because of which the supports stuck tightly to the surface of the stand. Of course, I scraped it off with a clerical knife, but the trace remained. However, this is not a model error, but a print error.

What I learned from this experience… I used to think it was unfair to take other people's models and remake them. But if skills are not enough, and the idea is your own, then why not? At the same time, I consolidated the skills of working with downloaded models. Editing is also not very easy, since spatial understanding is needed (there were problems with this before, but now I more or less understand everything where to attach, what to extrude, etc.).

This terminator will soon migrate to a new place of residence, and I will continue to study Compass 3D. And now, where a beautiful design is required, I will not hesitate to borrow ready-made models, because they are available for free and laid out for that. But for now, further projects involve technical execution, and not artistic, so the developments and models will be completely their own. That's all for now, thank you for your attention!
