3D Printing Conventions and Conferences

General tech events, like CES in Las Vegas or GITEX in Dubai, are essentially global conventions. They draw together businessmen, engineers and the curious from all over the world. At such conventions and associated conferences, the real-life experience exchange in technology innovation takes place.

With the 3D printing industry going strong in the past two decades, we see more and more AM manufacturers taking part in such conventions and conferences.

Meetups at 3D Printing Events

Every community has its own leaders and celebrities. So does 3D printing community. It is a good chance to meet a YouTuber, for example, whose channel you are subscribed to and following most of the tutorials, reviews or other entertaining videos. In some cases, you can get a sticker or a selfy picture with them.

(Image: 3DWithUs)

What to do if you are unable to visit an event? No worries, the dedicated 3D printing community members often share their experience with others. You can follow them on social media such as Twitter or YouTube where they often share it live.

If you are unable to watch a video but want to be updated live, then we would recommend following a particular hashtag on Twitter on Instagram like #CES22, #TCT21, #ERRF21, etc.

A year of radical change: what awaits 3D printing in 2021

3D printing is a clear competitive advantage

No matter what industry you're in, 3D printing is a real competitive advantage. Thus, 93% of respondents consider 3D printing as a competitive advantage, and this figure continues to grow from year to year. nine0003

Do you see 3D printing as a competitive advantage?

It can also be noted that, as 3D printing is now beginning to be used in a variety of industries, it is becoming an increasingly important condition for remaining competitive. So, the majority of respondents noted that their competitors also use 3D printing - in 2018 the number of such answers was 74% against 59% in 2017.

This once again confirms that more and more companies include additive manufacturing in their strategy; in many industries, this is already a reliable and common manufacturing or prototyping process. nine0003

Do your competitors use 3D printing?

In terms of companies' ROI in 3D printing, 46% of respondents noted that ROI increased in 2018, while for 49% of respondents it remained almost the same as the previous year. This is a stable result, professional additive manufacturing users are satisfied with their investment in 3D printing.

nine0022 What is the return on investment in 3D printing in your company?

Harnessing the full potential of 3D printing for a variety of purposes

In 2018, companies were more likely to invest in 3D printing. Professionals, in fact, are beginning to use this technology to solve a wider range of problems, expanding the number of areas in which additive manufacturing is being introduced.

3D printing applications

As in 2017, 3D printing is mainly used for prototyping, manufacturing and prototyping. There are no big changes here, but at the same time, companies around the world are more inclined to use 3D printing for several purposes at once. It can be noted a higher degree of integration of 3D printing in various fields of activity of companies. Thus, the share of enterprises operating on the principle of "first - 3D printing" has grown from 15% to 22%! nine0003

Integration

Businesses are taking full advantage of this cutting-edge technology and applying it without hesitation in a variety of applications.

Which departments benefit the most from additive manufacturing?

As in 2017, 3D printing is mainly used for R&D, design and manufacturing purposes. The share of 3D printing used by R&D departments is 46%, by design departments - 43%, and the share of using additive technologies directly in production is 41%. nine0003

As for the advantages of 3D printing, (although respondents cite cost reduction and reduction of production time among the main reasons for using additive manufacturing), a significant role for 48% of them also plays the ability to create products of complex geometry.

Benefits of 3D printing

Businesses buy more 3D printers but still use 3D printing services

We clearly see that more and more companies are making the decision to purchase 3D printers. Thus, the majority of respondents have their own 3D printer (66%), and 44% have more than one. In 2017, 53% did not own a single printer, and only 28% owned two or more printers.

Does your company have its own 3D printer?

The majority of respondents have FDM printers (75% of those who own a 3D printer), which is quite justified since this is the cheapest type of 3D printer. Additive plants of this type are also easier to use. SLA printers take second place (29%), and only 15% of respondents have printers using SLS technology.

Thus, consumers are clearly less inclined to purchase professional 3D printers such as SLS printers due to their higher price and complexity. However, this type of printer has a much larger number of enterprises than in 2017 (8%), while the share of FDM printers has decreased (85% in 2017), which indicates an increase in the professional level of this market, even in terms of view of the acquired technologies. nine0003

As for metal 3D printing, DMLS printers are the most common (16%). Only 4% of respondents have additive installations based on SLM technology. At the same time, the share of enterprises with metal 3D printers has increased significantly (2017 figures: 1% for DMLS printers and 2% for SLM printers).

What type of 3D printer do you use?

Do you use other digital production technologies? nine0024

What about 3D printing services?

For example, 38% of respondents use SLS technology, but only 15% of them have their own SLS printer. This suggests that companies are making extensive use of professional 3D printing services, giving themselves access to additive manufacturing technologies that they do not have.

Top 8 changes companies need to make to get the most out of 3D printing

  1. Raising the level of qualifications and training of employees.
  2. Marketing and communications.
  3. Investments in 3D printers.
  4. Reducing the cost of 3D printing.
  5. Increased sales.
  6. Increasing the integration of 3D printing in the company's areas of activity.
  7. Attraction of financing.
  8. Improving corporate culture and organization.

According to survey participants, in order to get the maximum benefit from 3D printing, they first need to improve the skills and training of their employees. Indeed, it is often the lack of training in additive manufacturing technologies that is the factor that prevents enterprises from fully using 3D printing. Many point to the need to change the corporate culture and organization. nine0003

There are also many changes that need to be made in marketing, sales, and profits. Respondents say that in order to get the most out of the use of additive technologies, it is important to invest more in marketing activities related to 3D printing, as well as look for new ways to generate income, either by increasing sales or by attracting financing.

Top 7 trends that will have a significant impact on 3D printing

  1. Cost reduction.
  2. Innovations in the field of materials.
  3. Metal 3D printing.
  4. Speed.
  5. Medical 3D printing and bioprinting.
  6. Quality and precision.
  7. 3D printed for mass production.

The trend, which is mentioned much more often than others, from year to year remains the reduction in costs. This is understandable, as reducing the cost of 3D printing means making the technology easier to use. Also, metal 3D printing is still among the most influential trends. nine0003

Compared to 2017, respondents were much more likely to emphasize the need for material innovation, due to the growing importance of material supply and cost.

Another trend mentioned more frequently was the use of 3D printing for mass production, as it is increasingly becoming a full-fledged manufacturing process used to make final products. This also leads to the fact that speed and quality of workmanship begin to play an increasingly important role. nine0003

The significant decline in the role of personal 3D printing is also understandable, as this confirms the upward trend in the professional level of this market.

Industry statistics: aviation industry

Among the enterprises of the aviation industry, there are practically no newcomers to the field of 3D printing (unlike other industries). For example, 59% of respondents working in the aviation industry have qualifications at the specialist level and 38% have an average level of knowledge in 3D printing. Obviously, these companies have mastered additive technologies quite well and are more capable of implementing technical projects in their industry. nine0003

How do you rate your skill level in 3D printing?

While other industries use AM more for prototyping and prototypes, the aviation industry uses 3D printing primarily for manufacturing, with 64% of respondents using 3D printing for this purpose, far more than other industries.

For what purpose do you use 3D printing? nine0024

This shows that the technology is developing and already allows you to create technical details for similar industries.

54% of respondents working in the aviation industry increased their revenues by 1-50%, while the overall share of companies that increased their revenues was 71%. This looks quite promising and suggests that 3D printing provides real financial benefits for such companies using additive manufacturing technologies. nine0003

In 2018, 37% of aviation enterprises spent more than $100,000 on 3D printing.

How much do you spend on 3D printing?

Since these companies use additive manufacturing for manufacturing, it can be assumed that such a high level of costs is due to the fact that they have to use expensive materials and technologies. This assumption is supported by the fact that 61% of respondents use metal 3D printing versus 30% of the total sample. This level of spending also shows that companies have confidence in this production technology and are not afraid to invest heavily in it. And since, as we can see, respondents are talking about increasing their income, we can conclude that they are satisfied with their investments. nine0003

What materials do you use for 3D printing?

To what extent is 3D printing integrated into your company's business areas?

nine0000 Ultimaker Cura. Exact print time

More than once I met on the net the statement that Cura is lying - it does not show the exact print time. I propose to deal with this statement, because Cura can calculate the print time quite accurately, it just needs to be prepared correctly.

In life we often come across the word EXACTLY. In different areas, the concept of accuracy may vary, but absolute accuracy is, in fact, a complete coincidence of the desired and the actual. nine0003

In most cases, absolute accuracy is achievable mainly in the computer or financial world, but in the engineering world, absolute accuracy is a utopia. And since the 3D printer and slicer are part of the engineering world, then within the framework of the “engineering universe” we will consider the problem of accuracy.

In the engineering world there is a concept of ERROR, or an acceptable positive/negative deviation from an absolute value. For example, if we want to print a cube with a side of 20 mm, while we allow an error of 0.5 mm, then all cubes whose side size will fall within the limit of 19.5 to 20.5 mm will meet the stated requirements.

The Ultimaker Cura slicer is a computer program that, according to its logic and mathematical model, prepares a print job for a 3D printer according to the parameters that are loaded into it.

That's just the process of slicing the model (by slicing we mean the process of generating a gcode file for a 3D printer) and the process of predicting time are 2 different tasks.

When slicing, Cura builds and calculates the trajectory of the extruder, allowing the 3D printer to grow a model, and after that, based on the generated data, the slicer calculates the estimated print time. nine0003

Cura operates with absolute values and, in accordance with the print parameters (line width, print parameters for walls, cover, bottom, filling) and the values of the specified speeds (see the “speed” and “displacement” settings sections), is able to calculate how long it will take to print parts in ideal conditions.

But, our world is not ideal and nobody canceled the physical processes. All 3D printers are different, each has its own settings, which the slicer often does not even know about. By default, Cura does not know at what speed the nozzle and table of the 3D printer heat up and cool down (you must agree, these are non-linear processes), what accelerations and jerks are set in the firmware of your 3D printer. So it turns out that the print time that the slicer predicts turns out to be much less than the actual print time. Sometimes at times. nine0003

But not everything is so bad. There is a way to "teach" the slicer to more accurately predict the print time and reduce the error to acceptable values. I managed to reduce the error to 15-20 minutes with long prints. Well, with short prints, the error generally becomes invisible.

A very useful plugin will help in this matter - Printer Settings

Install it in ultimaker cura through the plugin store.

Now you need to get all the printer settings specified in the firmware, for this you need to do the following:

Close the Cura slicer and restart the computer.

Download and run the Pronterface program You can also use Repiter Host, but Pronterface is more convenient.

Install the drivers for your 3D printer if not already installed.

Turn on the 3D printer and connect the cable to the computer.

Launch the Pronterface software and connect to the 3D printer. To do this, select the COM port on which the 3D printer was detected, select the connection speed and press the button CONNECT

In our case, this is COM5 speed 250 000

- something krakozyabry, it means you have chosen the wrong connection speed. Pick it up experimentally.

If nothing appears in the window on the right except for the text Connecting…, then the computer cannot communicate with the printer for some reason (the port is incorrectly selected, there is no driver, problems with the cable, etc.)

After we have successfully connected to the 3D printer, in the command line you need to enter the command

M501

Enter the command in the line to enter commands, press the SEND button.

This command displays all the settings that are stored in the 3D printer's memory.

Now, we know all its parameters and we can move on to setting up the slicer.

Launch Cura

Select the desired print profile and at the very bottom of the settings window we see a new section “ Printer Settings

This section stores all conceivable and inconceivable parameters of your 3D printer. Some of them may be hidden, but this does not mean that they do not affect the calculation of print time.

By moving the mouse cursor over the section name, you can open the list of parameters and display the parameters you need

In my case, the list of parameters looks like this: , we will be interested in the following parameters:

Heating parameters.

the process of heating and cooling of the table and nozzle is non-linear, they only add errors. You can try to calculate them for some average table and nozzle temperature yourself.
