Zortrax M300 Dual 3D Printed Pistol Grip Goes to the European Shooting Championships
Céline Gauberville, a top level athlete representing the French team, will compete in the 10m Air Pistol at the European Championships using a custom made pistol grip printed on a Zortrax M300 Dual 3D printer. The structure was designed and manufactured by Athletics 3D, a manufacturer of personal sports equipment for professional athletes. The company uses Zortrax 3D printers for the vast majority of its projects.
Shooting Through the Generations
Celine Gauberville is one of the most decorated female shooters. She is an Olympic silver medalist, three-time World Cup winner and three-time European champion. Together with their sister Sandrine, who is also a professional shooter and French national champion, Celine and Céline have been training since childhood. The parents of the champions were part of the French shooting team. The father, who now became their coach, competed in rifle shooting, the mother specialized in a pistol.
Celine started competing very early. Qualifying for the European Championship was the first major event in which the athlete participated when she was a junior. This competition meant a lot to Celine and she won it three times: in 2010, 2014 and 2018.
The importance of technology
For women, the Olympic shooting program calls for 40 shots in 50 minutes. In the 10m air pistol competition, Celine shoots a 4.5mm model. Both she and Sandrine use CM 162el pistols from the Swiss company Morini.

This model is based on the design presented by the arms company back in 1992 and is produced unchanged until today. The weapon proved to be flawless and was used by several Olympic champions in 10m shooting. Morini makes pistols with standard walnut grips that are great for most shooters. However, nearly all top-level athletes have custom-made grips modeled after their own hand, as the weight of the pistol, its balance, and how it rests in the palm of your hand can greatly affect aiming accuracy and therefore results.

According to professional athletes, the quality of sports equipment has an impact of 30 to 40% on the final result, so the product must fit perfectly and work properly at all times.
Reliability and comfort are of paramount importance, as the athlete spends 1 hour and 15 minutes with a pistol in his hand in 10m shooting competitions. An ill-fitting grip tires the shooter's shooting hand, and this, in turn, affects the accuracy of shooting.
Custom 3D Printed Shooting Pen
To 3D print a custom Celine pistol grip, Athletics 3D, a French custom equipment company for professional athletes, created a replica of the original Morini walnut grip. A 3D scanner was used to digitize the original design of the wooden handle, accurately conveying the shape and all dimensions. This step helped to get the handle geometry. The designers of Athletics 3D then considered possible optimizations:
• Make some parts of the handles thicker to adjust the balance;
• Change certain angles to improve grip;
• Optimize the degree of tactile sensation from the surface according to the preferences of the athletes.

In addition to external features such as ergonomics, the internal layout also had to be considered. The Morini grip must contain the electronics and batteries that operate and power the pistol.
To achieve the required internal architecture, the Athletics 3D team used an M300 Dual with two extruders to 3D print a sport shooting handle. In this way, the supporting structures could be dissolved and washed out from the inside of the model. Z-ULTRAT was used to make the final cut. The goal was to repeat the design of the handle but make it lighter.
The Athletics 3D team had to print several copies, each slightly different from the others, so Celine and Sandrine could try out the samples. 3D printing has become the most cost-effective manufacturing technology for this job. In one of the workouts with the new grip, Celine scored 391 out of 400 possible points and reached the current Olympic record.
Aiming for Olympic gold
The European Shooting Championships, which will take place in Croatia from May 22 to June 5, 2021, will be the last major shooting competition before the Summer Olympics, which are due to start in Tokyo on July 23, 2021.

Celine Gauberville is aiming for gold in both competitions, and Athletics 3D and Zortrax 3D printers continue to work to help her.
STL File Nintendo Switch - Ergo Grip (Original + OLED)・3D Print and Download Model・Cults
Update 07/28/22:
I added a modified version that fits Switch OLED. Because the OLED doesn't have the screw holes my original design relies on, the upgraded version is held in place with a screw hole on the joystick itself. The disadvantage of this solution is that now the joystick is not so easy to remove after being put in place, now the handle must be removed before removing the joystick. Be aware that this puts more stress on the gripper itself when it is removed. With that in mind, I would caution against taking the handles off and on too often, and it might be a good idea to print them in a less brittle material like PETG.
Update 17/07/19: .
I've been wanting to print and paint myself a new pair of grips for a long time, and based on my experience with the originals, as well as some new ideas, I also wanted to improve a couple of things about the design itself.
The most notable change is the extended brace that now spans more of the rear of the console, improving the less-than-reliable connection between the Switch and the Joy-Cons. Accordingly, the stand can no longer be unfolded to access the SD card without first removing the handle. Personally, I don't see this as a problem, but be careful nonetheless.
It's also worth noting that, compared to the original, the grips now print at an angle, which may seem a bit odd, but I've found this improves the printing of the horizontal overhang a lot, especially if you're using Curas' 'Support Interface' feature, which I really like. I recommend (you can read about it here: https://ultimaker.com/en/resources/52663-support ).
The only changes that have been made are some minor tweaks and refinements to help with a better fit and some more accurate model of the building board itself.
The last thing I added besides the models for the handles is a test piece for adjusting the support parameters, which saved time and material.
Update 06/22/18: .
Upon request, I have included a slightly larger version of the handle.
Original text:
My last and greatest creation. Not much to say, I wanted a grip for my switch, and since most of the ones available are somewhat flimsy, I decided to build my own. I have to give credit, I was influenced by the design of Toshi_TNEs.
https://cults3d.com/ru/3d-model/igra/nintendo-switch-portable-mode-grips although I would say my design is more complete. Unlike their design, my design snaps onto the main body of the switch prior to attaching the joycons, providing a nice snug fit. The grips themselves are also pretty substantial, although they aren't as big as the xbox controller's.
Gripper is available in two versions; version 1.1 is the one in the photos and has an extra piece sticking out to better support the switch when held with one hand. Both options work great, but I personally wanted more support.
For those who are worried about scuff marks on joycons, this design is meant to be sanded and preferably painted. If you're not going to be painting, apply thin masking tape along the sides and bottom that the joycon will rub against when it's in place. If you're painting, keep in mind that the thicker the tape, the less wiggle room the joycon will have. In the photo, I overdid it a little, hence the scuffs.
Printer: Ultimaker Original+ & Ultimaker 2+ & Ender 5
Suggested material:
The OLED version may benefit from printing in a less brittle material such as PETG, as it requires a little more flexibility when removed from the console than the original version.
General settings:
Layer thickness: 0.1 mm
Wall thickness: 1.6 mm (4 lines with .4 mm nozzle)
Fill: 5% - 10% (number of lines 15)
Top/bottom layer thickness: 8 - 12 layers
Top/Bottom Pattern: Concentric
Support: This will probably depend on the printer, but below are my settings for UM2+ other than the default settings
Support Density: 10%
Enable Support Interface: True
Support Z Distance: 0.1mm or 0.2mm (This is the most important setting when printing with the support interface and I highly recommend experimenting with the included test pattern to get the right result.
