3D Printing for Pets - Print Your Companion a Better Life!

Have you ever noticed just how expensive buying for your pet can get? There’s something off about paying upwards of $40 for what’s effectively a giant cushion they call a bed, or filling a shopping cart with assorted toys that you know aren’t worth the weight of the cheap plastic from which they’re made.

3D printing your own pet toys and accessories is not only a much cheaper alternative to purchasing them, it’s also a really fun way to spice up the life of your furry (or not so furry) friend.

There are a lot of ways to use your 3D printer to enhance the lives of your pets, and here we’re going to look at a few of my favorites. Don’t worry, though, I won’t just be sticking to cats and dogs. There’s something here for just about any kind of pet owner!

3D Printing for Dogs

Dogs are man’s best friend for a few reasons. They’re loyal, they’re social, and they’re adorable as anything. Dog owners the world over have found a lot of ways 3D printing can enhance the lives of our furry friends.

Anyone can print a food bowl or toy, so I’m going to show you some of the more unique and cool options for 3D printing awesome new things for your trusty companion.

As someone who grew up with both a dalmador and a border collie, I can tell you firsthand that the depth of a dog’s energy reserves is not to be underestimated.

While they’re mostly just happy for the company and exercise, sometimes it’s just impossible for the average person to keep up.

This ball scoop and launcher is a great way to make sure your dog gets the most distance in their run without tiring out your arm! When you get home you’ll have your pet napping peacefully while you still have the arm strength to wield the remote.

Have you ever wanted to see through your dog’s eyes? While now you can (more or less) with this 3D printed camera mount to fit onto your dog’s harness.

Not only is this a cool way to experience the world as your dog sees it – except with more colors – and you can fit your camera with a wireless uplink to easily locate your pet if they get lost in the park.

Speaking of the park, dogs can go for hours without running out of steam, but they still need a drink of water and a nice snack every now and then. This portable water and food bowl is the best way to make sure you keep your pet hydrated while on particularly long walks.

What sets this print aside from your standard dish is that it even fits a standard size water bottle so you won’t need to carry it separately.

Honorable Mention: Accessibility Prints for Dogs

All dogs love fun and adventure, but sometimes we rely on dogs to look after people who can’t easily take care of themselves.

Service dogs are well-trained and extremely capable creatures, but their work to become professionals isn’t easy. These accessibility 3D prints are designed to be rubbed with various scents to help a dog associate smells with colors to help blind people.

There’s even a small mechanism to help them easily open handled doors or toggle light switches to aid their trusting wards.

3D Printing for Cats

Cats may not be as dependent or reliable as dogs, but that doesn’t make them any less of a great pet. They’re playful, fun, and aren’t so reliant on us that they take up our whole lives (unless we want them to, of course.)

Cats love to bat things, and if you don’t distract them enough, they’ll be batting the last of your favorite glasses off the table before you know it. To keep them occupied and your beverages safe, there are lots of cool toys you can 3D print for your feline friend.

These sphere toys are easy to print and can be made large enough to fit anything inside, be it catnip or even a treat. Your cat will have a great time throwing them around your floor to get at what’s inside or simply just to see them roll.

If you prefer to be a little more hands-on with your kitty’s playtime, then I recommend printing out this classic fake fishing line to bounce around and watch them go nuts trying to catch it.

If you want your cat to go truly crazy and just want to watch and get a few laughs, those of you who are more mechanically inclined will love this automatic laser pointer, that moves that little dot around the wall to keep your cat – and you – entertained for quite a while.

3D Printing for Hamsters and Gerbils

Hamsters and gerbils are surprisingly active creatures. They like to run, play, climb, and generally tire themselves out. A hamster in an empty cage will lose its zest for life quite quickly, so it’s a good idea to fill their homes with an assortment of toys and ornaments to keep them entertained.

As an all-in-one, I really like these ‘Hamster Land’ 3D printed hamster toys. This little set includes a few things to keep your little friend occupied like a castle, a customizable house, and even a working hamster wheel!

If you have gerbils who are more on the more energetic side, then you’d do well to print this playground. It has enough variety to keep them interested with all the physical challenge they could want.

Don’t think I’m forgetting our littlest friends. Dwarf hamsters are adorable little creatures that like to tucker out just as much as their bigger cousins. This dwarf hamster house is a fantastic, and amazingly cute, way to keep any dwarf hamster occupied, and give them a nicer view while they’re at it.

3D Printing for Ferrets

Ferrets are a popular pet. They’re cuddly, they’re energetic, and they’re a bit of a handful. As social creatures, they thrive well in pairs or small groups, so you’ll want to keep them occupied so you’re not chasing after them all day.

As burrowing creatures, ferrets like to be in tight spaces whether they’re sleeping or playing. So this 3D printed ferret tunnel is a great way to keep them happy and give them a way around their ferret cage that isn’t always underfoot.

Because it’s designed to be long, the files are for interlocking parts. This means you can print as many as you need to create a ferret tube in whatever length you need.

Ferrets like to sleep curled up and surrounded on all sides, which is why the ideal bed for them is a hammock. If you’ve made one yourself, then you may have trouble attaching it securely to the top of their enclosure, or just fret that your knots will come undone and send your sleeping slinkers to the ground.

This 3D printed ferret hammock bracket is a safe and easy way to keep their bed aloft and secure. No more ferret tears, only a good night’s rest.

Speaking of nighttime activities, ferrets never seem to be able to decide if they’re nocturnal or diurnal, and so can be alert and active at any given time of day or night. Of course, if you need your rest, you won’t want to have your ferrets roaming around unsupervised when you’re trying to sleep.

Of course, any pet owner is going to be paranoid about locking the right gates or securing the right doors, so this handy Locked-For-Sure indicator will tell you at a glance that your ferrets’ enclosure is sealed tight for the night. Peace of mind was never so simple.

3D Printing for Snakes

Snakes are popular pets. They don’t need (or particularly want) a lot of attention, and they’re an arguably cool addition to any home. Ball pythons (or royal pythons) are particularly common in any reptile lover’s life.

As they’re not social creatures, snakes like to be alone and hidden. Anyone who’s ever looked in a friend’s enclosure and wondered if there really is a snake in there will know that their predatory nature means they’re most comfortable in solitude and shadow.

Because of this, any snake enclosure will need at least one hiding spot for them to curl up and be at peace.

Snake hiding spots are simple to print, they don’t need to be any particular shape as long as they’re hollow and baseless. This easy 3D print is designed to look like a common rock and can be painted and decorated in natural colors to mimic a natural environment.

It can be used in any reptile enclosure, so it’s not just ball python owners who could use this in their ball python enclosure, if you own an iguana or other lizards, you’ll find this to be a fitting addition to their enclosure too.

If you prefer to view your snake more easily, this fake log provides them with a space to curl up and be alone while also being open enough to not obstruct your view. It’s pretty well detailed and wouldn’t look out of place in any reptilian pal’s home.

If the natural look isn’t for you, though, then why not print out this hollow house for your python to retire to? Don’t worry, snakes aren’t as fussy about their environment as many other pets, so the unnatural setting of a modern home won’t be an issue.

3D printed toys for children (mostly) / Sudo Null IT News

I want to share a small selection of 3d printed toys.

I am the proud father of a one and a half year old girl. In the presence of a 3d printer, the question does not arise whether it is necessary, the question arises “what?” print toys. In the future, there are ideas for my own projects in this topic, but so far I have only worked with ready-made models from Thingiverse. Friends for the daughter were selected quite meticulously, including the most printable options were selected on a simple self-assembled Prusa i3, if possible without supports, the degree of cuteness and mobility (for example, arms and legs) was also taken into account. This 3d printed zoo is constantly updated and is no longer quite a zoo and partly no longer just 3d printed. Just in case: links to 3d models right on the titles of the toys.
I started with a truck:

I used the machine team to assemble self-tapping screws 3x15 - 4 pcs.
Not to say that it is a favorite toy, but it is periodically remembered and used for riding passengers. The daughter carries all sorts of pussies, dogs and butterflies in the back.

Dog

The most cute among the representatives of the canine that I found. True, painting skills were also needed for the dog to get expressive devoted eyes (permanent black marker to help). My daughter hardly parted for several days and then often remembered until she lost it somewhere. Everyone likes it. I gave it to all my friends children, everyone is delighted. By cuteness, only 9 compete with a dog0009

pussy

Post-processed in an acetone bath, then dried, ventilated for several days, now it does not smell. Looks and sounds like porcelain when tapped. The girl likes it, in terms of frequency, perhaps, in second place in the top. I also used a permanent marker.

Horse

Glued model, but without supports. It turned out to be not very in demand, perhaps because it often fails and goes to the balcony to treat fractures of too thin legs with acetone-ABS glue. Now I try to choose more durable models, such as the following one.

Elephant

Of those that are printed at one time immediately assembled with movable legs. Nyashnost also rolls over. I gave it to one adult girl - she was more than happy with her one and a half year old daughter - and immediately began to play with him.

Small robot

It is convenient that it is printed in one assembly. Unfortunately, my printer had problems, because. without supports, printing is not very correct, but with insoluble supports it is impossible - nodes that should be movable will not be. However, he joined the team and is sometimes in demand.

Mark II Large Robot

I really wanted this (for myself). Printing - without problems without support everything. Only for a long time, a set of parts, I didn’t exactly time it, but for about a whole day. Weight total about 250g at 25% filling. With dimensions, though everything is not very simple, I had to customize. Fingers are not especially thought out. As a result, they were redone and still easily disassembled, fly off. Pins are easiest to hammer in with a hammer and sometimes work best with a vise. To summarize: a lot of patience is needed, and still, in some places, not everything is well fastened. All this, however, concerns ABS, with PLA, perhaps there will be fewer problems. For a small child - not very much because of the small details, and even his daughter was even a little afraid at first, in my opinion, because Mark-2 was too similar to a living creature - she can stand, sit, take difficult poses, hold something in hand. For a big one, like, for example, your obedient servant, have fun for a few days!
small pictures:

Plowed Hare

Multifunctional device: plow-box-for-little-garbage-and just Zaya. Assembly, eyes and nose are made separately, for printing in different colors. It is used medium, by me as a plowing machine, as I remember that it exists - it is sometimes nice to use your creations in everyday life. What a warm and proud pleasant feeling arises.

Butterflies

Butterflies, despite the lightest and shortest (less than 15 minutes) printing, invariably evoke the most positive emotions in a child. Made to be worn around the neck, but we use it without strings directly for admiration, adoration and loud joyful exclamations of “Baba!”. The downside is in case of breakage, and, given the thickness of the original model of 0.8 mm, this happens often, an irresistible sadness of the baby occurs, which, however, is easily stopped by printing the next copy. Top by a wide margin.

To summarize:
-3d printing of toys is a source of joy for: 1) Your children 2) You and 3) Your loved ones
-There are some that are not closely present in stores
-If you have 3d modeling skills, any modification is possible.
-You can print a spare part to replace the broken one
-Due to the soft requirements for accuracy and quality, the printing of 3d toys can be used for the final adjustment of the printer, to identify the optimal modes for working with new plastic, etc.
-In the vast majority of cases, 3d printed toys win in value

P.S. Just in case. Links to 3d models right on the titles of the toys.

Today, 3D printing is developing and spreading very rapidly, gaining more and more popularity. And no wonder, because 3D printing is an invaluable tool for prototyping designs, creating mockups, fabricating parts, and more. At the same time, it is no longer difficult to buy a 3D printer at an affordable price even for home use. However, a 3D printer is not only a tool, it is also a kind of toy. A toy capable of creating other toys! Using a 3D printer to make toys gives you control over the material, color, size and other components, so the models you create with 3D printing will be unique!

But what if you don't have your own 3D printer and you need to print a toy or some part of it? It doesn't matter, in this case our 3D printing studio will help you! You only need to place an order by uploading the file of the desired finished model, after which our specialists will contact you to calculate the cost and resolve other possible issues.

Why 3D print toys?

This is probably the first question that comes to mind, and it is not surprising, because often 3D printing can cost you more than the cost of such a toy in the store. But there are also a number of advantages of 3D printing, as well as cases when it would be more profitable and appropriate to turn to creating models on a 3D printer.

  • As already mentioned, a toy printed on a 3D printer can be absolutely unique due to the ability to set exactly the shapes, sizes and colors that you and your child want.
  • Some toys can be difficult to find in the store, and their cost may exceed the cost of their printed copy.
  • Sometimes you only need to replace one or a few broken or missing parts of a toy, such as a building toy. In this case, it will be much more profitable and more expedient to use a 3d printer than to buy a whole set for a high price.
  • An important factor is, of course, the impressions of the 3d printing process itself, which will captivate both a child and an adult. And the positive emotions of your child from the toy you created will be the best reward!
  • And for those who are just getting acquainted with their printer and 3d printing in general, the process of creating toys will be an excellent, exciting simulator to improve their skills and gain experience.

Which toys can be 3D printed?

In the context of constant development and increase in the possibilities of 3D printing technology, you can create almost any toy on a 3D printer, but the result largely depends on the capabilities of your device, your abilities, as well as the time, resources and effort that you are willing to devote to this process. Therefore, more or less simple projects are most often created on a 3D printer. But the relative ease of manufacture does not mean boring finished products! Below we will give you a list of 20 interesting 3D printed toys that are not particularly difficult to create. Among these crafts you will find toys for children of all ages, including the smallest: mechanical products, motion figures, building blocks and even rattles! For each toy from the list, we leave a link to the finished model so that you can try them yourself. So let's get to know them better!

1. Mini monster truck

Two monster trucks. Source: Thingiverse

Not everyone can afford a monster truck, but if you have a 3D printer, you can print yourself a mini copy of it... which is almost as cool. Thanks to the all-printed suspension and removable discs that attach easily and without the aid of glue to the body, this truck is perfect straight from the printed surface.

You can even choose from a variety of body styles and wheels. And for a two-tone tire, stop printing the wheel at 19.8 mm and replace the filament.

Model files for download can be found here.

2. Surprise eggs

Surprise! Source: Twitter

Bigger is not always better. And often the most interesting thing is just a small size, and these 3D printed eggs with a surprise are an example of this.

These tiny cars with moving wheels and other accessories are amazing! Plus, you have plenty to choose from, as you can print surprise eggs with just about anything inside, be it a fire truck or even a fighter plane!

Support not required for these models. We advise you to use at least 40% infill to make sure that small elements are both beautiful and durable. Given the number of such tiny parts these machines have, be prepared that printing them can be a real challenge for you, but with good calibration and fine tuning of your machine, everything will work out in the best way!

3. Elastic Gliders

Get ready to take off! Source: Thingiverse

With 3D printed gliders, you can "pull" even more fun out of ordinary rubber band ! Just 3 simple steps, and your glider will take off: hook it with an elastic band, pull it towards you and release it.

With this model on Thingiverse, you and your friends can take to the skies a whole flotilla of these rubber gliders!

100% infill and a layer height of 0.1 mm are recommended for greater aircraft strength and longer life for thin wings.

4. Folding sword

Telescopic pirate sword. Source: Thingiverse

This toy may not be best given to a child when there are breakable items nearby. But in the right environment, telescopic swords will bring tons of fun and enjoyment to kids! From the designer of this folding pirate sword, you can also find models of telescopic katana, daggers and even lightsabers!

This Telescopic Pirate Sword is designed for printing at low speed using a 0.4mm nozzle. Also, successful printing requires a printer with a good retract and precise settings for Coast (turning off extrusion at the end of the layer print) and Wipe (“wiping” the nozzle at the end of the layer).

5. Micro Catapult

Hit all your enemies (or at least your deskmates). Source: Thingiverse

This little catapult is a great toy for kids and bored office workers alike. She can throw small crumpled pieces of paper and any other small things that will fit in her. Selected ammunition can fly about 2 meters, which is enough to hit unsuspecting victims at another table!

This model is an all-printed prefabricated assembly that does not require any supports or special adjustments. A minimum filling and layer height of 0.25 mm is sufficient.

Despite the fact that many catapults are made from PLA plastic, the author of the design still insists that this model is not for PLA, but for ABS plastic. We can also recommend PETG filament for this printing, which has the best qualities of PLA and ABS.

6. Top

The oldest toy for the whole family. Source: Thingiverse

As far as we know, the spinning top is one of the oldest toys in the world. In ancient times, tops were made from almost any material: from stone and wood to fruits and nuts. And now additive technologies allow you to make your own spinning top using a 3D printer! All you have to do is print this model, glue the pieces together and have fun with this simple yet fun toy!

Offered 0.2 mm layer height and 20% infill.

7. Moveable animals

Cute articulated octopuses. Source: Thingiverse

Making flexible prints on a 3D printer has become completely affordable and common practice thanks to special filaments such as TPU. But what if we said that you don't have to use flexible plastics to create flex parts?

Using excellent hinges that are printed in one piece with the entire model, you can create movable flex toys even from plastics such as PLA, ABS and PETG, without any additional settings and adjustments.

The standard specifies a layer height of 0.2 mm and an infill of at least 15%.

Most popular models:

  • Octopus
  • T-Rex
  • Lizard

8. Spirograph

Convenient case for creativity at any time. Source: Thingiverse

Everyone knows such a children's toy as a spirograph, which allows you to easily draw masterpieces with repeating geometric patterns. But this model has gone a little further and is a whole case containing a platform for drawing and a compartment for storing gears and paper. It fits easily into your pocket, backpack and bag, so you can take it with you and paint whenever you want!

The case has several levels. The lower level holds slips of paper for notes, drawing gears and, if desired, a small pencil or pen, if, of course, you can find one. The next level provides a secure, flat drawing surface so you can make art while walking! The top level has fixed gear teeth and holds the piece of paper in place.

A layer height of 0.2 mm and an infill of 20% or more is recommended. As a loop, a regular straightened 1.75 mm filament thread is used.

9. Transformers

Toys from the planet Cybertron. Source: Thingiverse

Transformers are still a hugely popular children's toy, so these Optimus Prime and Megatron are sure to please your kids.

This printed Optimus Prime transforms from a classic Optimus truck into a fully functional standing robot. And it's amazing, considering that you immediately get a ready-to-use all-printed model right from the printing platform, which does not even require supports!

But, of course, every Optimus needs an opponent to fight. Therefore, you can also print Megatron, but it should be noted that his model is more difficult to print and consists of two parts.

10. Set of toy tools

The first tools for little craftsmen. Source: Thingiverse

The Toy Tool Set is a great way to introduce kids to basic tools, their look, purpose and how they work. Print your child's first hammer, screwdriver and pliers and he'll feel like a real craftsman!

The hammer is modeled to fit two pieces together with a screw, but some users simply glue them together, which is just as pretty. You can also use a hammer to assemble pliers: just lay the two pieces on a flat surface with the screw down and tap lightly a couple of times.

Model can be found here.

11. Castle

Build your own medieval world! Source: Thingiverse

This medieval castle playset is meticulously designed for 3D printing. Walls and towers are easily attached to each other with a simple connection. You can make as many details as you want to create a large or small original castle layout of your own! The set contains walls, towers, houses, characters, animals and a variety of props to add to the fun of this medieval set.

All parts are small enough to be printed comfortably even on 3D printers with a small printable area: 140x140x140mm. For such purposes, the Flashforge Creator Pro 2 3D printer is perfect, equipped with two independent extruders and has excellent printing accuracy. This printer will cope with the study of small details, and two extruders will help you print several parts at once or one part in two colors!

12. Lego bricks

Your favorite constructor is now more accessible! Source: Pinterest

LEGO is one of the most popular toys for children. At the same time, the cubes of this designer are made of ordinary ABS plastic. So, having your own 3D printer, you can print the missing/lost Lego bricks yourself or even some of your author's design of the details of this amazing designer! At the same time, you can use not only ABS, but also other 3D plastics: PLA and PETG are also great.

Thingiverse has a lot of Lego models, and we'll take a look at one of them. It's customizable model of several different LEGO and LEGO DUPLO pieces. These bricks are not completely identical to real Lego, but they are compatible in every way.

13. Ballista

Fire! Source: Thingiverse

Introducing our fully printed ballista, ready to use right out of the box. One has only to set the string and load the projectile, and this ballista will impress you with its simplicity and good range of the arrow. As a bowstring, you can use several layers of thread or ordinary stationery gum.

Recommended to print in PLA or PETG with 90% coverage and 0.2mm layer height.

14. Edible toys

The Open Toys project turns ordinary vegetables into toys. Source: Thingiverse

The project was originally envisioned as a way to turn commonly discarded residual materials such as wood and cork into toys: helicopters, planes, cars and so on. But soon, wood and cork were replaced by more accessible and easily pierced materials: fruits and vegetables. With this project, you can turn ordinary food items into fun personalized toys.

15. Anti-stress keychain

Entertaining keychain. Source: Thingiverse

Add some flair to your keychain with this cool little toy. She will entertain you wherever you are!

This model is not the easiest, but try it and you will definitely succeed! Important print quality settings are "Outer Walls Before Inner Walls" and being extra careful with temperature. It is printed with supports and requires a certain, sometimes lengthy, post-processing. Remove not only supports, but also make sure that the surface of the part is smooth, otherwise it will cling and stutter. A scalpel or a 1 mm drill will do. Periodically rotate the gears to see where it still sticks, which is especially true when using PLA.

16. Chunky Trucks set

Two models from the fun and cute Chunky Trucks set. Source: Thingiverse

The adorable Chunky Trucks collection includes various unique models of small trucks, fun builders and even a movable barrier. The cars are specially designed so that even the smallest children can play with them. Unlike builders, who are not recommended to be printed for toddlers so that they do not try to put them in their mouths, but which will greatly amuse older children.

All models can be printed without supports. And for long truck life, at least 25% infill and three-wall use are recommended.

17. Rattleswords

Arm your warrior! Source: Thingiverse

Rattles are an integral part of all babies. But what if we move away from banal and boring designs and build a rattle in the form of a sword for your little warrior? This fun design will not only amuse your baby, but also you, as this rattle will be a lot of fun to print!

All corners of the model are rounded for safety. There are also two versions of the tip. Initially, a gem was attached to the tip, but after some concern that the stone could slip off the tip and be swallowed by a child, a second version was created that did not include a gem.

Print two sets of dots first. Then, while printing the sword, throw them inside the blade. This will ensure that the peas stay inside the rattle forever. After printing all the elements, simply fasten them with superglue.

As with any printed toy, parental guidance is required. Be sure to throw away the toy if it breaks.

18. Viking Squigglepeeps

20. Jumping turtles

The variety of these turtles is amazing! Source: Thingiverse

Last but not least, jumping turtles! Agree, even the name sounds fun! And a variety of shell designs will give each turtle its own uniqueness. This model uses the same flex concept as the Mini Monster Truck above, making the Turtles bounce when you tap on the body. Also in this turtle, the head can be drawn into the shell.

The model is assembled with printed H-clamps and requires no glue. All parts are printed without supports. Also note that using the raft (rafts) and brim (margins) options can have a negative effect on the results if you don't then take the time to sand and clean the edges at the base.

If you are having problems with head slip, you can try printing 1 of the 3 narrower shaft head files that the author uploaded specifically for this case.
