Photons are among us. Or a budget photopolymer, which is SMOG
Greetings fellow 3D printers. I decided to write my first article on 3dtude, which will be related to the contest
'My 3D Printer' .
Foreword:
In February 2017, my friend and I decided to make my dream come true and get into 3D printing. On the advice of the Good Man, our first Tevo Black Widow printer was purchased, which, as a result, has established itself as one of the most reliable printers from the 'Celestial Empire'. As time went on, we studied FDM printing and all aspects related to it, while observing the possibilities of the 'photopolymer printing universe'. Unfortunately, the prices for DLP and SLA printers were and are, to put it mildly, biting, if we consider domestic and western options. About a few months ago, a kind person suggested to us that there is a Chinese analogue in terms of print quality that is almost as good as more expensive competitors. We were excited about the opportunity and placed an order for the Photon from Anycubic ($420) and within 3 weeks it was delivered directly to our office.
Delivered in this box.
The printer comes well packed in hard foam, you don't have to worry about transportation, who will order it. I didn’t take a lot of photos on the package, the most important thing is: instructions, a scraper for removing the printed model, a spare film for the bath, a wrench with spare bolts for installing the handle of the printer cover and the printed table, protective equipment (gloves and a mask) for working with photopolymer and 250 ml of green resin from Anycubic.
As for the assembly of the printer, I can say that even a child of 10 years old who knows how to use 'Google translator' can master it. It is enough to screw the cover to the printer, set the print table on a single Z-axis and calibrate the printer on a piece of paper. Using the display is convenient and quite simple, unlike FDM printers, where there are a lot of settings, everything is intuitive here.
Let's move on to the most interesting, to TESTS_)))
According to the instructions, the manufacturer recommends that we download the software (aka the Photon slicer) installed on the USB flash drive that came with the kit. From myself, I advise you to download a more recent version from the off site of the manufacturer link to it
I don't see the point in writing about the slicer from Anycubic, everything is as usual there: you load the model, set the size, install the raft and support if necessary. At the end of the cutting, it gives out the print time, you throw it off on a USB flash drive, you print it. The most interesting point is the settings of the printing itself, these settings are basic, they were originally in the slicer designed for the resin that came with the printer.
The print resolution is set to 50 microns, the main exposure is set to 10 sec per layer, the exposure time of the first layers is 50 sec and the number of the first layers is 8 (it is also a parasitic illumination).
The first test cube, which was also on a flash drive, was printed simply on Easy)))
After printing, put on protective equipment, unscrew the red screw (loosen the printing table to remove it), transfer it to the table (originally prepared for resin dripping) , in order not to stuff everything and everything with oily resin, separate the model with a scraper, then using a container, pour alcohol into it, we used medical alcohol, and thoroughly wash the printed model from resin residues, then put it on the light in a nail lamp, or in the sun,
. After the procedures, you can take off your gloves and enjoy the print quality.
We were very impressed with the print quality after almost 2 years of printing on FDM printers. To our surprise, even the arches in the small upper turrets were printed.
The deer amazed me with its elegance!
2 rings were also printed from Anycubic polymer.
Before ordering Photon, we were looking for affordable polymer options in our domestic market and came across the Novgorod manufacturer Gorky Liquid. We ordered a photopolymer called Simple.
By trial and advice of kind people, we have selected the appropriate print settings, if the print time is critical for anyone, try to place the model in the slicer as low (horizontally) as possible to the base of the printing table. You can also reduce the time of the main layer from 20 sec to 16 sec is selected individually, the time of parasitic illumination and the number of its layers can also be selected individually from 65 sec to 50 sec in this case and 8 layers to the first 3 layers.
And now to TEST_)))
The material is very interesting, the tactile sensations are very pleasant, the printed works have a soft-touch surface. The dragon's wings are springy, have rubber-like properties, but I don't recommend bending them at an angle of 90 degrees)))
Then they printed the T - 34 tank on a scale of 1:100 from two parts, the main body and the turret. We were very impressed with the detailing of small parts on the tank's armor. The tower is spinning.
Since we used to print a lot of characters of different complexity on FDM printers, we decided to print a mini diorama of Captain Marvel.
Diorama 10 cm high was printed in 2 parts, in this photo, due to poor focus, the face is not visible, but it was printed very clearly with all proportions. I would like to note an important fact that the supports must be removed immediately after washing the model, before the light in the lamp, otherwise you may fail and in
, as was in my case with one of the models))).
The Captain's model itself is 7 cm high and everything was printed amazingly, in places where supports were removed, I recommend using sandpaper 1000, 2000, 2500 grit.
A bit of the lightening process after printing.
Let's move on to more complex models:
Eiffel Tower 10 cm high.
All the railings and walls were printed well in my subjective opinion, maybe the DLP printing gurus will correct me_)))
In the middle there are places with a glossy surface, very similar to resin residues that did not go away after exposure to the lamp, maybe you need to tinker more with print settings, I will be glad to all criticism and advice _)))
The final chord of the models will be a test cube for DLP and SLA printers developed by Denis Vlasov.
Photo taken on a 10 kopeck coin.
We see that the turret is perfectly printed, but there is no X in the circle, instead of it there are 2 horizontal stripes, maybe this is the Photon limit or you need to shaman with the settings, I have not found the answer yet.
I was most impressed by the letters and numbers clearly printed (do not take into account the parasitic illumination of the first 8 layers, right wall). The zoom of the Xperia Z2 phone does not allow you to examine them in detail, if you take a magnifying glass and examine them in detail, all the numbers are readable, I'm afraid to even imagine how small they are.
Summing up, I can say the following:
Anycubic Photon is a godsend among the current market of DLP and SLA printers in the budget segment. For casual printers like us, this is a great solution to many of the challenges associated with miniature orders. The ease of setup and capabilities of this printer allow ordinary people who do not have experience in the additive industry to join the 'world of photopolymer printing'.
