3D printed weapons take on a serious look with a metal-barreled pistol

News

Another horror story has appeared in the arsenal of 3D-printed gunsmiths in the form of a 3D-printed gun "Songbird", almost entirely suitable for manufacturing on a 3D printer.

An interesting feature of the new pistol is a separate barrel that can be customized to the desired caliber, and most importantly, modified with metal tabs. It's no secret that simple 3D printed weapons pose more of a threat to users than to anyone or anything else. FDM-printed models somehow suffer from reduced tensile strength due to the layered structure, and therefore a 3D-printed barrel can simply break right in your hands.

The metal liner allows not only to increase strength and, as a result, safety, but also to improve shooting accuracy, because nothing prevents a metal rifled barrel from being inserted into the 3D printed module. On the other hand, if you already use real weapon components, then it is easier and more reliable to make a whole metal gun without resorting to 3D printing. In other words, the project is of purely academic interest.

Nevertheless, even such ideas are met with disapproval from the vigilant public and law enforcement agencies. In the videos below, the maker under the nickname Guy in a Garage did not neglect the metal inserts to comply with the law - the inserts are needed so that the weapon can be detected by conventional metal detector frames.

The body of the gun is printed in ABS plastic, but the barrel in the first version is made of nylon. A version with a fully polymer rifled barrel withstood about 200 rounds of small-bore . 22 rounds. For more powerful ammunition, a barrel with a smooth metal tab was made. Interestingly, the barrel with the liner withstood several rounds of .38 and .357 Magnum cartridges, but the ABS plastic frame still cracked, although the barrel itself was not damaged.

Original full nylon barrel:

upgrade up with a trunk made of ABS-plastic and a metal tab for fine-caliber cartridges:

APAGE with a metal tab under the caliber .357 magnum: 9000 9000

and, of course, not, not forgotten in the Russian Federation, the unlicensed manufacture of firearms is punishable by law.

Electron beam melting (EBM)

EBM Technology

Electron Beam Melting is used to produce titanium implants

Electron Beam Melting (“Electron Beam Melting” or EBM) is a metal additive manufacturing method. This technology is often classified as a fast production method. Electron beam melting (EBM) is similar to selective laser melting (SLM) - the main difference is the use of electron emitters (so-called electron guns) instead of lasers as energy sources for melting. The technology is based on the use of high-power electron beams to fuse metal powder in a vacuum chamber with the formation of successive layers that follow the contours of a digital model. Unlike sintering technologies, electron beam melting allows you to create parts of particularly high density and strength.

Technology

Arcam AB industrial EBM machine

This method of producing free-form parts allows you to create high-density metal models from metal powder. Finished products practically do not differ from cast parts in terms of mechanical properties. The device reads data from a file containing a three-dimensional digital model and applies successive layers of powder material. The contours of the layers of the model are drawn by an electron beam that melts the powder at the points of contact. Melting is carried out in vacuum working chambers, which makes it possible to work with materials that are sensitive to oxidation, such as pure titanium.

Consumables consist of pure metal powder without binder filler, and finished models are not porous. Thus, firing of the printed model is not required to achieve the required mechanical strength. This aspect categorizes EBM alongside selective laser melting (SLM) and separate from selective laser sintering (SLS) and direct metal laser sintering (DMLS), which often require post-printing firing to achieve maximum strength characteristics. Compared to SLS, SLM and DMLS, EBM has a faster construction speed due to higher emitter power and electronic rather than electromechanical beam deflection.

Electron beam melting is carried out at elevated background temperatures of the order of 700-1000°C, which makes it possible to create parts that do not suffer from residual mechanical stress caused by the temperature gradient between the already cooled and still hot layers. In addition, the complete melting of the consumable powder allows the production of monolithic products - hence the maximum strength and no need for firing.

The technology was developed and pioneered by the Swedish company Arcam AB.

Application

Craniofacial implant made with EBM technology

The use of titanium alloys as consumables allows the use of EBM technology for the production of medical implants.

Since 2007, two European companies, Adler Ortho and Lima Corporate, and the American company Exactech have been using EBM technology to manufacture acetabular cups (hip joint implants).

The technology has found its way into the aerospace industry: Boeing, Lockheed Martin and NASA use EBM to manufacture jet and rocket engine parts and aircraft structural components.
