Your own factory, or how to create a model for 3D printing”

In previous articles, we have already talked about 3D printers and even introduced the best services and applications for their owners. Today we will talk about how to create your own models for printing.

Yes, there are a huge number of ready-made models on the Internet - useful and beautiful items that you can freely print on your printer. So the ability to create them yourself seems superfluous. But it's like with texts and photographs - you can learn how to perfectly print Harry Potter sequels or full-length posters ***. But it won't help you if you have to turn in a typed thesis or take a photo of your parents for their anniversary. It is the same with 3D printers: the ability to perfectly print existing templates will not help if you need a part whose model is not available on any of the services. In this case, you will need at least a basic understanding of how to create 3D models.

So, as an example, we will make a cookie cutter out of our logo. The first step is to prepare the image itself so that it is convenient to work with it later. First, remove the background - we do not need it.

Next, select the logo and in a new layer add a border to it. In the 3D model, this will be the outer perimeter of the mold, cutting out the cookie itself from the rolled out dough.

Since our logo is quite detailed, and the dough eats up details during baking, we deliberately leave only large elements and strokes that form the basis of the image.

Typically, there are no more than two levels of punching through on a cookie, so we break the elements into two groups and paint them in different colors.

Everything, the blank for transferring the image into a three-dimensional format is ready.

To create a 3D model, we will take a relatively easy to use, but at the same time functional application. We chose SketchUp Make as a not very complex, but at the same time not a primitive program.

First of all, with the help of a line and an arc, we outline the outline of the logo.

Select the resulting line and use the Offset tool to create two larger takes. One slightly larger - to create an outer perimeter. The second one is much larger - to form a ledge, for which it will be convenient to pick up the mold.

Due to the complex shape of the contour, we get the intersection of the lines of the outer perimeter. Here you have to remove the crawled out lines - "lightning" and replace them with a simple stroke line.

The resulting part of the form is grouped and saved as a component. In a new layer, we begin to outline the details highlighted on the workpiece with the second color.

At the end, we also group them and begin to circle the elements highlighted in the third color. There is a nuance here - in the largest contour there should be a gap, "drawing" the muzzle of a squirrel. In order to get this clearance, you need to start tracing this detail just from it. Otherwise, we simply will not see the background image on which it needs to be stroked.

After tracing this contour, the "filling" of the lumen can be selected and simply deleted.

As a result, we get such a picture.

Now, with the help of the Push/Pull tool, we add volume to the drawn paths.

First, we “raise” the small details located in the middle of the larger contours. So that all elements of one layer are at the same height, when adding volume, we hover over the upper surface of the already “raised” details of the logo.
