Each cartoon produced by the animation studio Aardman is recognizable almost from the first frame, with the exception of the animated film "Santa's Secret Service". The fact is that the production of the studio is distinguished by its original graphic style and painstaking work during the creation of each frame. Almost all the creations of Aardman Animations are made exclusively from plasticine and then filmed in stop motion. Usually, for the release of one cartoon, artists are engaged in preparatory work for more than six months: sculpting scenery and assembling models.
Beginning
Entrepreneurial and bold lamb Sean appeared on the screen in 1995. This character was born thanks to the "plasticine" British animator Nick Park, who invented him for the third short film about the adventures of Gromit and Wallace called "Haircut" to zero ". Only 12 years later, the character turned from a minor into a main one and got his own television series Shaun the Sheep, the 1st episode of which was released in 2007.
Successful and long-lasting
In addition to a decent list of full-length works, the studio has television series: the unconventional "Angry Boy" and the bold "In the Animal World" with Lip Sync. However, the most successful and long-playing project of Aardman is the Shaun the Sheep cartoon. More than 130 episodes were combined into four seasons, each 7 minutes long. And so, as a continuation of the beloved project, a full-length film was released for hire, the screenwriter and director of which was the brilliant Mark Burton. Like Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the Sheep was called a wacky but touching family comedy. One of the reasons for its wild popularity is that all the characters, without exception, express themselves only with the help of gestures, facial expressions, all kinds of sounds: grunting, bleating, and so on. A funny, cheerful and uncomplicated cartoon is understandable to both adults and the smallest viewers, so it is not surprising that the British decided to release a full-length series of a long-loved hit.
Plot
Shaun the Sheep in Russian retains its original mentality and originality. Its plot is not distorted at all by the translation. The plasticine cartoon begins with the fact that the inhabitants of the Happy Farmer, unable to endure the regime established by the owner, put the unfortunate man to sleep, stuff him into a food truck and send him to the city. There, the farmer ends up in a psychiatric hospital, but after that he becomes the most famous and popular hairdresser, although he cuts his clients with a machine, like sheep that are familiar to him. Soon, his image adorns all the billboards of the metropolis, and Banksy dedicates graffiti to him on unpainted brick walls (this moment is highlighted by audience reviews). Shaun the lamb, having freed himself from the master's dictatorship along with his entire herd, together with other animals, settles in the farmer's house. Animals have fun to the fullest: arrange seances and violent parties with damage to property. But the fun cannot go on forever, and having drunk enough, the inhabitants of the farm begin to miss their owner. They decide to go looking for him. Under the leadership of Sean and the dog Bitzer, the animals resolutely head to Big City, where danger and adversity lie in wait for the team at every turn, among which is a determined service for catching stray animals.
Incredibly funny
Shaun the Sheep 5 is original, funny, outstanding and sentimentally charming. The plot of the animated tape is very dynamic, every minute something happens. Every detail is carefully sculpted and lovingly put in its place. Character gestures are characteristic. All together it is funny, touching, and sometimes dramatic. It is noticeable how Mark Burton wittily sneers at a significant number of episodes of the original. After all, according to the scenario, all the inhabitants of the farm are terribly tired of the routine, the repetitive everyday life categorically bored everyone without exception. Attempts to leave their native land were observed in some episodes of the animated series Shaun the Sheep (Season 3), but after a series of comic adventures, the animals returned before they had gone far.
Innovation is impossible
At this stage of development, the animation industry has reached a level high enough to make innovation impossible. All animation tapes use tried and tested techniques, standard scenario moves, and computer graphics in the projects of leading studios never cease to amaze. However, at the same time, nothing completely new, "roaring" like "Monsters Corporation" or the cult "Lion King" has not been released for a long time. Pixar's sequels City of Heroes and How to Train Your Dragon 2 didn't turn the industry upside down. Aardman, which previously had one flagship - "Wallace and Gromit", released a masterpiece of British humor. According to audience reviews, Shaun the Sheep is a cartoon that you want to watch over and over again. Funny gags, appropriate jokes, comical antics of the characters encourage the viewer to sincerely burst into happy laughter from the first minutes of timing to an extremely sentimental climax and a somewhat tense denouement. "Shaun the Sheep" in Russian has preserved current jokes about Internet fashion, trends that have spread like a virus, and promo shots. It really pleases.
Calculation of success
The Shaun the Sheep cartoon as a comedy takes a lot from the origins of cinema - silent films in which all the actors had to convey the meaning of what is happening and the emotions of the characters with body movements and facial expressions. Although the animators of the project had an even harder time: instead of plastic and textured actors, they had to work with sheep, whose figures are generally rather inexpressive. Moreover, most animals do not have eyebrows, and, as you know, it is with them that it is easiest to show emotions. But the result of the work is amazing - all the characters are convincing, and at the climax they manage to play an impressive dramatic scene in front of the viewer (reviews testify to this). Shaun the Sheep is considered a calculated success by many critics, as the plot is simplistic, the plot moves are far from new, and the whole narrative structure is similar to an anthology of previous Aardman creations for children of primary school age. So nothing new, no opus magnum happened. It is a pity, but the feature film did not become the next milestone in the development of the industry and the genre.
Seal of Authenticity
The full-length version has been noted to have several references to Shaun the Sheep Season 3. Namely: it is not burdened with various kinds of "literary" and from the first to the last frame is built using cinematic resources (montage, gags, plastic - everything is filled with "Aardman" meaning). By the way, all plasticine characters and decorations are made so smoothly and evenly that a modern child may well mistake them for computer 3D. Although, if you look closely, in some places the fingerprints of the creators appear, like symbolic seals of authenticity.
Musical accompaniment
The feeling of miracle and happiness is doubled in the cartoon "Shaun the Sheep" by the songs of composer Ilan Eshkeri. The title soundtrack appears as if by accident, and then quickly and unexpectedly disappears. At the same time, Eshkeri remarkably managed to emphasize and beat everything for which the musical accompaniment appears in the frame. Along with the release of the animated film, an entire album of musical compositions was released under the name Shaun the Sheep by VA. "Shaun the Sheep" songs are uniquely decorated, their number is 11, and the total playing time is more than 32 minutes.

"Shaun the Sheep" is a joyful and solid animated series that claims that life is happiness! Let the most uncomplicated, daily routine, that's it, it is a small, but such a real happiness.
