3D printing is just made for cosplay, and we have already seen how game and movie fans make themselves for cosplay more than once using new technology. Among the latest such projects, it is impossible not to notice the steampunk Alien costume, posted by James Bruton on the XRobots website. James designed it himself and printed all of its elements on the Lulzbot TAZ 3D printer.

Alien costumes in films are usually made of fiberglass and latex. However, Bruton came up with a costume specifically for himself, and it turned out to be completely individual.

The costume was printed from hard ABS plastic and flexible NinjaFlex on a Lulzbot TAZ 3 3D printer with two extruders.

Bruton designed all parts of the costume in the free Autodesk123D Design program. First, he exported each part to a separate STL file, and then using the "combine STL files of models from different materials" function in Slic3r, he generated a common GCode. After that, you could go directly to printing.

James printed the joints and connectors on a Lulzbot TAZ 3 3D printer with two extruders, mixing two different materials. For example, in the example below, thin strips of ABS are encased in Ninjaflex rubber. “In the future, this option can be used to create prostheses and robotics. It can be tailored to the needs of each individual patient,” says Bruton.

Fingers attached to rings on black gloves. “The fingers are attached to the rings on the back of the hand, forming an exoskeleton,” explains Bruton. “The rings are filled with acetone to strengthen the connection.”


Now you need to collect your hands. The parts below were printed in ABS and Ninjaflex at the same time.

The red areas in the drawing below indicate areas that can bend, while the blue areas are made of hard plastic. Thus, the red areas are folded around the arm and closed with strong latches on each side. All of them are printed in black.


The upper arm and shoulder consist of several pieces that need to be joined together. After assembly, you can see what a grandiose goal James Bruton set for himself.

The project is still under development. However, it is already amazing. We are 100% sure that you too can't wait to see the final result. You can follow the progress of the work on Bruton's website. If you want to make your own costume, access to all stl files can be found on the downloads page.
