Normandy sr2 in isolation.

Hello everyone!

A friend wanted his own Normandy for a long time, and being a fan of the Mass Effect trilogy, I agreed to make such a ship a reality. But that was back in February, and I didn’t have time to print and post-process such a colossus. I was able to start being in self-isolation at the end of March, and after discussing all the details with a friend, I began to create.

On 3DToday, I already found a post about the creation of this ship, which helped me in my search for a model for printing, and I also realized that there is no need to rush, there is time. As a result, I chose this model, minus one, there was no ship stand model included with the files, only holes of different diameters were provided in the center of the fuselage (for the stand), I chose a part without holes (this option was also there), estimating that I can model the stand myself. After printing out a few details and imagining how long the ship would be on such a scale, I realized that it was not right, it was necessary to increase the scale. Stopped at 150% of the original. Printed for about a week, in fact the total printing time is somewhere around ~ 30 hours. PLA plastic manufacturer Flashforge. For large parts, such as the fuselage, I set the layer height to 0.22, for all other small parts, impellers, etc. 0.15-0.18, all walls in 3 layers, infill 10-15%, some parts were printed with supports, print speed 70mm / s, temperature heads 205, table 50.

Next, I removed all the supports and sanded their traces. Actually, while I was sanding from supports, I was sanding the entire ship quietly. I used sandpaper with a grain size of 500 (from supports and rough jambs) and 1200 (final). Then gluing everything together, for some reason I like this process the most. I glued it with dichloromethane, a great thing for plastic. I took 2 liters at a price of 250r per liter. Right here. Not advertising, just prices in specialized stores for 3D printing on methylene are several times higher, but many people already know this. Here is the process and result of gluing:

I also puttied difficult gluing places, where there is a small contact area, for strength and "solidity of the ship". If anything, I used tamiya putty as a putty. After drying it was still sanded. And he went to primer:

The primer is also tamiya.

Then more work with sandpaper, at that time fed up, but necessary)

But then the hardest part was waiting for me, this is painting. The first color that had to be applied was white, I glued everything that was not white with masking tape and masking tape 5 mm wide, I had to cut a lot, figure it out, re-glue it, achieve symmetry by eye:

I painted with an airbrush and a little brush, my girlfriend helped me with painting) If not for her, I would have finished much later being distracted by the witcher, self-isolation is the same) Yes, and with fine work she is better than me, so work with a brush and she did the work on the mistakes) In general, many thanks to her) I will say right away that it seemed to me a bad idea to paint the ship completely with brushes, it would not have worked out smoothly, as an option if there is no airbrush - this is spray cans.

Airbrush itself - tnt air bd130 nozzle 0.3, compressor Jas 1203. Vallejo model air paints, special for airbrushing. Airbrush purchased not so long ago, and in fact used it 3 times before painting Normandy, so far from being a professional.

We go further, black, the scheme is the same, I glue everything that I can not black and fill it with an airbrush:

It's time for the inscriptions, and I decided to simulate stencils, downloaded a font from the Mass effect universe, called Slider. Modeled in Autodesk Inventor 2020:

I chose 1mm thickness for them and 100% infill, layer height 0.1, to be more precise:

After the stencils, the letters need to be finished with a brush.

There were only small details left and it was time to think about the stand.

Turning the ship over, I used my 3D eye scanner and ruler and started to model the surface of the base for perfect contact with the ship. It turned out like this:

Divided the stand into 2 parts for ease of printing:

The detail on the right was reprinted in order to fit it perfectly to the surface of the ship)

The ship decided to connect the stand to the stand with 3m 2-sided adhesive tape, did not want to stick tightly. It's just nice to know that you can always carefully remove the ship from the pedestal and run around the apartment with it)

It remains to varnish.
