The Daniels Digital Fabrication 3D Print Lab is equipped with a variety of 3D Printing technology: Binderjet 3D Printers, along with various FDM printers. The 3D Print Lab houses two Stratasys F120 3D printers, a Makerbot Method FDM 3D printer, a 3D Systems Projet 660pro 3D printer, a 3D Systems Projet 650pro 3Dprinter, and a 3D Systems Projet 360 printer. The Printing Lab is located on the 1st floor in the Digital Fabrication Office. Currently due to COVID the print lab is functioning as a service bureau for submission. Files are submitted and then collected once complete.

Stratasys F120 FDM 3D printer

The Stratasys F120 extrudes ABS plastic, a production-grade thermoplastic that gives printed models the ability to perform just like production parts in real-world applications. Two materials — one for models, one for support — are heated in an extrusion head and deposited in thin layers on a modeling base. The model is precisely built layer upon layer. When the model is complete, the support material is removed, leaving an accurate, durable, functional 3D model.

Material cost for the Stratasys F120 is charged at $2.70 per cubic inch for model material and $4.70 per cubic inch for support material.

Makerbot Method FDM 3D Printer

The Makerbot Method FDM 3D Printer extrudes PLA or Tough PLA plastic, allowing for rapid prototyping of production grade parts and models. The printer utilizes a dual extrusion system with two materials — one for models, one for support. This allows are support free model building, support material is washed away postproduction in a water bath, leaving an accurate, durable, functional 3D model.

Material cost for the Makerbot Method is charged at $0.10 per gram for PLA, $0.20 per gram for Tough PLA and $0. 35 per gram for PVA (support material).

The 3D Systems Projet 650pro / 660pro uses a composite starch material to produce physical monochromatic or full color models quickly, easily, and inexpensively from computer-aided design (CAD) and other digital data. Students can 3D print concept models, functional prototypes, and presentation models, which are key tools in evaluating and refining design ideas.

Whether you work in R&D, or you are a software, mechanical or electrical engineer, there are some reasons for which you cannot ignore 3D printing. Here are three of the reasons, but you will eventually tell us more!

Rapid Prototyping is one of the first areas that 3D Printing has impacted immensely. In fact, making a prototype in a short time and at a reduced cost is a doubtless advantage. 3D printed prototypes allow testing shapes, materials, size and functionality of engineering parts. Therefore, 3D printing highlights potential flaws and promptly gives guidelines for eventual correction. Moreover, the flexibility of 3D printing offers the possibility to change shapes in short times and at low costs. For example, Volkswagen declares that thanks to the additive manufacturing technology, compared to more traditional engineering methods, they can test innovative solutions without relying on third parties. This will save them a lot of time and costs. However, 3D printing is now moving beyond just prototyping, finding further applications in all types of industries and being used from low to medium scale production. May 3D printing be ready for mass production soon, too?
