Beginning of 3D adventure
Chase Me is the first fully 3D printed film created by Gilles-Alexandre. He has always been fascinated by the mix of 3D and other media. His passion for 3D printing began with the release of the 2009 Laika film Coraline. All facial expressions were made using a 3D printer.
Then the idea of creating a short animated film was born. The film Chase Me begins with a girl walking through a magical forest. While walking, her shadow turns into a monster that chases her through the forest.
"Catch Me is a story about how to embrace your fears and turn them into something beautiful" , - Gilles-Alexandre Deschaux - 3D artist and director.
Manufacturing
He started the film not knowing if it was possible, but thinking he would find a solution along the way. So it was with some details that needed to be printed, for example, with a growing tree (photo below), which had to be specially designed for printing.
All leaves were not located at the ends of the thinnest branches, but were grouped on secondary branches. It also took several 3D printing attempts because the branches were too thin. The barrel was also separated from the rest so that it could be printed additionally.
All footage of the film was first designed by the artist in CG and then processed into a 3D model.
The scenery was then re-created with animation (15 frames per second) to give the final result of the film.

Some of the parts were almost 1.5 m long. In order to be able to print them, the set had to be cut into several pieces and then assembled and glued together. For example, a tree required 22 different parts.
When it came to characters, a lot of attention was paid to their size. For example, the height of the main character ranged on average from less than 1 cm to 3 cm depending on the shot.
About the movie
It may seem like a small thing, but it took 10 months to produce the 2,500 parts needed to make the entire film. And the size greatly affects the printing time. For close-ups, the girl could be up to 7 cm, which is quite small considering that in a classic stop-motion film, the characters are about 20 cm.
This rather small size was a challenge to find the right framing with the camera.
