Puzzles Dynamics Launches Robotic Arm Windows 3D Printer "ARMBOT" on Kickstarter - 3DPrint.com

A group of Brazilian and Hong Kong entrepreneurs, focused on sharing the practical benefits of 3D printers all over the world, makes up Puzzles Dynamics. They already offer several options meant to facilitate the realization of creative projects and ideas, such as this Longboard electric skateboard, available on their website. Headquartered in Sao Paulo, with high quality standards and a low-cost culture, they’ve been working on popularizing Delta 3D printers in Brazil, but now they’re starting something new. They’re launching a campaign on popular crowdfunding site Kickstarter for their affordable ARMBOT, a robotic arm 3D printer that runs Windows.

The ARMBOT joins the ranks of popular Kickstarter robotic arms, including the Dobot M1, the LittleArm and ShopArm robots from Slant Concepts, and the FLX.ARM from Flux Integration LLC, which launched a Kickstarter campaign back in 2014. As you can see on the ARMBOT Kickstarter campaign page, it was inspired by industrial robots, which is clear in the precision and utility of the ARMBOT’s features. You’re able to download, or create, a 3D file directly from the ARMBOT, and then print that object using highly precise robotic arm technology.

Printed 100mm/second, using nozzle 0.4 PLA and 45% wood

The ARMBOT has an articulated arm layout that is not unlike our human arms. This layout lets the ARMBOT expand the print area, and enhance the speed of printing, without losing any of the print quality. It features precision drawing, and can even draw on a PCB board or a pad of paper! According to this video on the Kickstarter page, it looks like anything can be a print bed for the ARMBOT! Just create a 3D file directly from the ARMBOT, export the STL, and print away, using the robot arm’s fast print option.

The ARMBOT features a standalone Windows 10 operating system, with an Intel Cherry Trail X5 processor 1. 84 GHz, 2G Ram and 32G ROM, and 8th generation Intel HD graphics. You can create, download, and slice right from the 3D printer! It has a parallel-axis joint layout: the arm is smooth in the ‘X-Y’ direction, but rigid in the ‘Z’ direction. Another plus: you have remote access to your ARMBOT from your smartphone, tablet, or another computer, by using the integrated remote control software or any other third party remote software. It uses fused filament fabrication, and can print at speeds of up to 150 mm per second. The only visible drawback I can see is that they are still working on improving the laser engraving of the ARMBOT.

Several of the early bird special rewards are no longer available, but there is still one left. For a lucky 21 more backers, if you pay HK $3,100 ($399 USD), you can get the ARMBOT with Windows 10 completely installed and calibrated, plus 500g of PLA filament, by this coming April! The regular price of the Windows 1-enabled ARMBOT, plus 1kg of PLA filament, is HK $3,900 ($449 USD). If you’re looking for a smaller way to contribute to the ARMBOT, you can pledge HK $80 ($10 USD) and get a key chain with your name 3D printed on it. A Kickstarter has been launched for a robotic arm 3D printer called Armbot, which is hoping to become the new standard for filament-based 3D printing.

Taking inspiration from the robotic arm commonly found in car manufacturing plants, the team behind Armbot has developed an articulated arm that is able to move freely in three dimensional space and deposit filament for 3D printing across a larger area. The Armbot team claims its product can offer high-precision 3D printing at 100 micron layer height, with a roughly 10” x 10” x 8” build volume, at speeds of up to 150mm/sec. The 3D printer also has remote control features for smartphone and tablet.

As I delved into the Armbot project page a little further, I began to wonder if they were trying to reinvent the wheel—something that works fine the way it is. But the Armbot does have advantages, especially thanks to its articulated arm. The articulated 3D printing arm means the extruder is able to extend into confined areas and then retract or fold. It’s also equipped with a parallel-axis joint layout for smooth X-Y movement as well as a rigid Z-axis direction shift.

The Armbot 3D printing system comes at a low price of roughly $399 for remaining early-bird backers, and $499 afterwards. When considering what you get with that price, specifically the 3D printer components, a Windows 10 box, and 500g of PLA plastic, it's a great deal providing the team is able to deliver on its promises.

For those wondering just how well the Armbot will actually work, the company has provided some examples of decent-looking completed 3D prints, proving that their prototype unit is at least functional. And with updates already posted about laser engraving upgrades, the device does seem to have a lot of potential, especially at this price point.

Of course, just like any Kickstarter, there are risks and challenges involved for all of its backers. The campaign page goes into detail about how critical the fine-tuning process is to making their machine able to 3D print cleanly. Having built my own 3D printer, I can attest to the frustrations involved in calibrating a kit machine. 

Finding manufacturing partners that can deliver on time is also something for the Armbot team to consider, and so far it seems they are relying on scaling up production using a 3D print farm for faster output. A lot can go wrong there, but the company has promised total transparency.

In the end, while this isn’t the first time inspiration has been drawn from automotive robots for 3D printing (Autodesk and others are doing something similar), it might be one of the first crowd-sourced efforts of its kind. Backers can expect their rewards from February to March 2017.
