How does 3D printing work?

Every 3D printer builds parts based on the same main principle: a digital model is turned into a physical three-dimensional object by adding material a layer at a time. This where the alternative term Additive Manufacturing comes from.

3D printing is a fundamentally different way of producing parts compared to traditional subtractive (CNC machining) or formative (Injection molding) manufacturing technologies.

In 3D printing, no special tools are required (for example, a cutting tool with certain geometry or a mold). Instead the part is manufactured directly onto the built platform layer-by-layer, which leads to a unique set of benefits and limitations

From here, the way a 3D printer works varies by process. For example, desktop FDM printers melt plastic filaments and lay it down onto the print platform through a nozzle (like a high-precision, computer-controlled glue gun). Large industrial SLS machines use a laser to melt (or sinter) thin layers of metal or plastic powders.

The available materials also vary by process. Plastics are by far the most common, but metals can also be 3D printed. The produced parts can also have a wide range of specific physical properties, ranging from optically clear to rubber-like objects.

Depending on the size of the part and the type of printer, a print usually takes about 4 to 18 hours to complete. 3D printed parts are rarely ready-to-use out of the machine though. They often require some post-processing to achieve the desired level of surface finish. These steps take additional time and (usually manual) effort.

Fan remote control battery cover. 3D printing.

Another micro-project for one evening took place. This is the battery cover for the remote control (RC). Today, every second device is controlled by a remote control. And one in five devices has a broken or lost battery cover. I'll try to reduce the statistics of broken caps and restore one of them. We repair the cover from the remote control of a household electric fan.

The cover has one of the standard failures. Lid latch broken.

Model development.

First, I create a bar with dimensions of 60 x 23.5 x 8 mm.

Next, I round off the lid on one side.

And I also add a rounding of the lower part of the cover along the rounding radius.

Now you need to select the cavity of the cover, thereby creating a thin-walled element from it.

On the inside of the rounding I make guide clips in the form of two rectangles.

The next item is the lid latch post. It is this rack that is broken in the original cover.

At the top of the rack I pull out the latch itself.

In order for the cover to click into place in the remote control housing, the latch must be embossed at the bottom.

Now I add fillets to the corners of the lid because there are fillets of the same radius in the body.

I also reinforce the latch post with several thickenings. Perhaps this time the rack will be more powerful and will not break so easily.

This is the end result of the lid model.

Preparing and printing the model.

Uploading the *.stl file to the Repetier-Host program to prepare for printing. Thus, I get a preliminary estimate of plastic consumption, and also get the opportunity to evaluate the quality of cutting the model into layers in layers.

A video of the printing process was also filmed, and in order not to get bored while watching it, I increased the speed by 2 times.

Lid is printed and ready for use.

Old and new cover for comparison.

Why black, you ask? Yes, because I had black plastic in my printer and was too lazy to change it.
