3D printed first class cockpit model for Airbus A380

Some orders can be challenging even for experienced modellers such as Modellbau Robert Hofmann.
Modellbau Robert Hofmann, a division of the Hofmann Innovation Group in Lichtenfels, Germany, received a special assignment. She was commissioned to design 28 business class seats, 6 private cabins and a 1:1 first class lounge for the Airbus showroom in Toulouse, France.
The seating and sleeping units have been made to life size. With their help, the airline wants to impress its customers with the luxury that awaits them on a long-haul flight aboard a wide-body aircraft like the A380.

During the course of the project, many individual elements had to be fastened together. Airbus set not only tight deadlines, but also required designers to comply with the aesthetic component.
Passenger seats had to meet criteria for light construction. There are also many very high safety requirements that can only be met by using high quality, high temperature resistant plastics such as PEEK or PEI. nine0006
Proper engineering design and selection of materials can save a lot of money during aircraft production.
Additive Manufacturing
In addition to using different molds to produce all of these parts, Hofmann also produces high quality titanium components for highly stressed components. Parts are made from metal powder using LaserCusing laser melting technology.

In 2004, LaserCusing technology was introduced by Concept Laser GmbH, part of the Hofmann Innovation Group.
In the course of work, the laser melts the powder of almost any metal and grows the details layer by layer. Finished products are smooth and neat, with no signs of deformation. The use of this unique laser, coupled with single-component metal defects, fundamentally distinguishes LaserCUSING from other technologies. nine0006
The process of laser melting of metal powders allows developers from the Hofmann Group to give the future product almost any shape and ensure functional integration. Examples include bionic holders that connect the outer skin of an aircraft to the cockpit, or filling fittings for an oxygen supply system.
« LaserCUSING technology sets a completely new benchmark in component development. Technologies such as 3D printing should not be viewed in terms of tools and molds. We now have opportunities that were previously only dreamed of and that could hardly be achieved with traditional casting methods,” says Jens Henzler, CEO of Robert Hofmann GmbH.
