MolToys turns 3D amino acids into jewelry

On our website, we often talk about the contribution of 3D printing technology has made to science and design. But it is not every day that we see such a close intertwining of these two spheres.
MolToys, a company known for making molecular 3D models, gave us this opportunity by recently 3D-printing bead models that resemble the molecular structure of amino acids.
MolToys was founded in 2008 by John Huntoon and Graham Johnson who wanted to get students interested in science by developing an essentially more hands-on approach to the study of molecules. Their molecular models are used in different ways: for educational purposes at school and universities in the departments of natural sciences, for training personnel in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, doctors use them to explain and clearly show the patient what he is sick with, and scientists use them to showcasing their new discoveries. However, now it is possible not only to study and use molecular 3D models of as visual aids, but also to decorate yourself with them.
Amino acid beads, which can be used to make necklaces, bracelets, earrings and other jewelry, have been scaled up to 1-2 centimeters in diameter, that is, the size of a real amino acid molecule has been increased by 20 million times. In addition, it should be noted that amino acids have single-letter abbreviations (for example, proline is denoted by the English letter P), so that secret messages, initials or names can be laid out from the beads.
When MolToys was just starting out, molecular models were made on the 3D printer of its own production, but after the expansion of the company, an agreement was made with Shapeways, which provides 3D printing services.
The MolToys website states: “Our models are made from X-ray crystallographic data taken from published scientific articles. These data entry points contain the XYZ coordinates of the various atoms that make up the structure and shape of the protein. We use this structural data and 3D printing software to build molecular models."
After the design process is completed, the models are sent to the 3D printer for printing.
MolToys provides other services, such as custom production of 3D models of . That is, if your favorite molecule or protein is not yet available in the MolToys online store, then the company will be able to make a 3D model of it for you based on data from the Protein Structure Database. The company also supports many 3D file formats, including vrml and stl, and can produce models in colored sandstone or plain polyamide.
