3D Printing Platform (Made in the USA)

PEI (Polyetherimide) is a great building surface for any 3D printer. The amber / yellow colored surface is commonly used to print a whole range of different filament types such as the two most commonly used ones, ABS and PLA. Depending on the filament type a heated build surface might still be required. PEI sheet as a build plate requires little to no surface preparation. Printed parts adhere extremely well to the build surface making the use of kapton tape, blue tape, hairspray, or glue sticks unnecessary. Typically, even printing brims or rafts is unnecessary. PEI is widely becoming the gold standard build surface because it is so convenient to use. Our PEI is Ultem 1000 grade.

Size Options

  • 4.7x4.7 inches
  • 5x5.5 inches (fits Monoprice Mini)
  • 8x8 inches

All sizes have a thickness of 1 mm.

If the size you are looking for does not perfectly match your build plate, you may purchase a bigger size and score / cut the PEI sheet down to the needed dimensions. PEI can be easily snapped off if you first score the surface. If there is a size that you need which isn't available, drop us a line, and we'll try our best to assist you.

Application

PEI can be applied a number of ways, but generally there are two easy methods. The first method is to simply put the PEI sheet on top of your existing bed platform and clamp it down with binder clips (alligator clips) or similar. The second method is applying the 3M 468MP adhesive in conjunction with the PEI sheet. First apply the 3M 468MP adhesive directly to the PEI sheet, and then affix the other side of the 3M 468MP adhesive to your build surface. Please note that depending on how many layers your build surface is the bed temperature that is set may not match the surface temperature of the PEI sheet. Additionally, it should be noted that 3M 468MP is a very sticky adhesive. The 3M adhesive will clump up after you touch it, so re-positioning the adhesive is not feasible. If you do not have the 3M 468MP adhesive, you may purchase it here or purchase one of the combo packs that come with a PEI sheet and 3M 468MP adhesive.

The application of adhesive to the 16 x 16 inch PEI sheet can be done by applying four separate 8 x 8 adhesive squares. Please do not overlap the adhesives to maintain a flat surface.

Additionally, the PEI sheet comes with blue protective film on each side that must be removed prior to use. It is very important to remove the blue protective film.

Care and Use

Before each print it helps to clean the surface of the PEI sheet with isopropyl alcohol (70-91%). Fingerprints or residue will build up on the surface and inhibit surface adhesion which the isopropyl alcohol will clean. After a good number of prints, PEI may lose it's surface adhesion. Please simply sand the PEI sheet down with 2000 grit sandpaper.

How to clean 3D printer beds: Glass, PEI, adhesive

In the world of FDM 3D printing, the first layer of printing is often the most important. Poor first-layer adhesion, which can be caused by incorrect calibration, too-fast print speeds, or a badly prepared build surface, is the cause of many failed prints.

One of the best ways to prevent bed adhesion problems is to maintain a clean build surface. By taking good care of the surface, the extruded thermoplastic has a better chance of sticking to it, and the odds of print failure are significantly reduced.

However, it’s not always clear how to clean a 3D printer bed or its build surface. Different print surfaces are made from different materials, which react in different ways to certain cleaning solutions. This article goes over the basics of cleaning your 3D print bed, looking at the supplies you’ll need and the different methods you can use.

An FDM 3D printer is made of many parts, but the (literal) foundation of a good print is the print bed.

Usually made of glass or aluminum, the print bed is a solid, flat surface upon which the printed part gets made. In Cartesian-style printers, these beds are square or rectangular, while on Delta-style printers they are circular. Sometimes called a build plate, the print bed can be heated or unheated: a heated bed helps improve first-layer adhesion and makes it easier to remove the finished print.[1]

A clean bed results in better first-layer adhesion

Somewhat confusingly, not all FDM users use their built-in print bed as their build surface. The build surface is whatever substrate the nozzle deposits the first layer of plastic onto; it can be the print bed itself, or it can be something else like a removable glass plate, a rigid plastic sheet, or strips of masking tape. Furthermore, printer users often treat their build surface with additives like glue stick or hairspray to improve adhesion.

When we talk about 3D printer bed cleaning, we may be talking about cleaning the print bed or cleaning the build surface — or both! Cleaning the build surface is important because a dirty surface with filament buildup can negatively affect adhesion and lead to failed prints. But it is also important to clean the print bed even if it is not used as the build surface, as it will ensure a longer lifespan and better adhesion to removable surfaces like tape and BuildTak.

    Isopropyl alcohol

Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is a colorless chemical compound that is often found in antiseptics, detergents, and disinfectants. It is sometimes called “rubbing alcohol” due to its former use as a topical preparation for massages.

FDM users can use IPA (containing 70–90% alcohol) as a cleaning product on print surfaces like glass and PEI. The chemical substance is strong enough to remove grease and residue but is unlikely to damage these surfaces.

    Acetone

Another compound used to clean 3D printer beds and build surfaces is acetone, which is found in products like nail varnish remover and paint thinner. The solvent is also used as a smoothing agent for ABS prints, as it is able to dissolve the plastic (though it won’t cut through PLA).

Acetone can be used to clean glass beds, working well against dirt, grease, and some types of plastic filament residue. It may also be used to clean PEI and other surfaces, though it can damage a plastic surface if used too frequently.

    Window cleaner

Window cleaner can be used to clean a glass build surface

Spray-bottle window cleaners typically contain a form of alcohol such as ethanol or isopropanol, in addition to other grease-dissolving agents. They may also contain additives such as perfumes, though products with fewer additives are better for print bed cleaning.

Window cleaning sprays are formulated for the cleaning of glass and can therefore work well for cleaning glass print beds and surfaces.

    Soap

Ordinary dishwashing soap mixed with warm water is a cheap and effective solution for cleaning print surfaces of various kinds. Unscented products with minimal additives work best.

    Equipment

In addition to chemical substances, a few pieces of equipment are needed to clean a printing surface. It is useful to have the following on hand:

    • Scraper: A flat-blade scraper is used to remove residue without damaging the print bed or build surface

    • Sandpaper: More abrasive than a scraper or cloth, sandpaper can help maintain an even surface

    • Cloth: A soft microfiber cloth can be used to apply various substances to the print bed or build surface

    • Paper towels: Paper towels are suitable for applying mild cleaning agents like soapy water and window cleaner

    Glass

Glass is one of the most popular and effective build surfaces, since it distributes heat evenly and is relatively easy to clean. Some printers have glass print beds, while some users affix a removable glass sheet (usually borosilicate glass) to a metal print bed.

While glass provides a flat printing surface, its smoothness can actually prevent good first-layer adhesion. Because of this, users often apply glue or another adhesive to the glass surface before printing. This naturally creates a buildup of residue, which should be cleaned between prints.

How to clean glass 3D printing beds:

    1. If possible, remove the glass plate from the print bed to avoid getting cleaning solution in the printer’s mechanical parts.

    2. Scrape away any large pieces of glue or filament residue with a dry scraper, applying firm and even pressure.

    3. Use a cleaning cloth soaked with warm soapy water to clean grease and other residue from the glass about once a month or when required (but only if the surface can be removed from the printer). Alternatively, use window cleaner.

    4. While wearing protective gloves, soak a cloth with a small amount of IPA and wipe the surface before each print.

    5. Avoid getting fingerprints on the glass where possible.

    PEI

Polyetherimide (PEI) is a chemically stable thermoplastic that is used as a printing surface due to its good material characteristics such as heat resistance. Low-cost PEI sheets can be attached to a build plate and last many print cycles.

An advantage of using a PEI sheet over glass is its superior adhesion, particularly with materials like ABS. Typically, no extra adhesive like glue is used on the surface, which reduces buildup of residue. However, regular cleaning is required to maintain good adhesion.

How to clean PEI 3D printing beds:

    1. If possible, remove the PEI surface from the print bed to avoid getting cleaning solution in the printer’s mechanical parts.

    2. Soak a dry cloth in IPA and wipe the PEI bed surface to remove gunk and residue. Repeat this procedure between prints. Alternatively, use dish soap and warm water.

    3. Apply acetone with a cloth around once a month to smooth down and further clean the plastic surface.

    4. If the surface is scratched, use a fine-grit sandpaper to smooth it down. If the imperfections are too severe to be fixed, replace the PEI sheet.

    5. Avoid getting fingerprints on the PEI where possible.

    Adhesive tape

Blue painter’s tape — a kind of masking tape — and NASA-developed Kapton tape are common build surfaces for FDM 3D printers that do not have heated beds.[2] (A heated bed could melt the glue on the adhesive side of the tape.) Despite the improvised look of a taped print bed, the material works well and can easily be replaced.

The obvious disadvantage of using adhesive tape is that there will be small seams between each strip, which can leave a visible line on the base of a print. However, this problem can be mitigated to some extent by using thicker tape. Furthermore, the cleaning process for tape is trickier than with solid surfaces like glass, as tape cannot be treated with solvents or other wet cleaning solutions.

Blue painter's tape should be scraped clean and replaced when worn

How to clean adhesive tape 3D printing beds:

    1. Use a dry scraper to remove residue and leftover filament.

    2. Replace damaged sections of tape. If possible, try to keep the surface level and even to avoid issues with future prints.

    3. Avoid getting fingerprints on the tape where possible.

    4. Replace the entire tape bed when it is visibly worn, torn, or uneven. Clean the bed underneath with IPA or acetone to remove glue residue before applying the new layer.

    BuildTak

One of the most popular branded printing surfaces is BuildTak, a low-cost, heat-resistant adhesive sheet that is easy to clean and replace. Although its material is not disclosed, users suggest it may be a mixture of PEI and glass.

How to clean BuildTak 3D printing beds:

    1. Soak a dry cloth in IPA and wipe the BuildTak surface to remove gunk and residue. Repeat this procedure between prints.

    2. Try using warm water if the IPA is unsuccessful.[3]

    3. Avoid getting fingerprints on the BuildTak surface where possible.

    4. Replace the BuildTak surface when it is worn and parts no longer adhere to the bed.

There are many print bed surfaces to choose from, and different surfaces suit different print jobs. ABS filament works best on surfaces like PEI sheet or BuildTak, but struggles when printed onto a very smooth surface like glass. PLA offers more options, working well on a heated bed with a glass surface.

Whatever surface you choose for your 3D print bed, cleaning and maintenance is vitally important — both for the longevity of the surface and for ensuring good first-layer adhesion that will prevent failed prints.

To get the most out of your FDM printer, always have a selection of cleaning supplies on hand, always wipe down hard print surfaces between prints, and carry out a thorough deep clean every few weeks or months.

⇡#Tiko is a solid, reliable and cheap 3D printer

There are a lot of 3D printers on Kickstarter. Every week, a project starts that focuses on 3D printing and is ready to take one or another characteristic - compactness, accuracy, speed, ease of use, reliability - to a new level. Due to the number of such projects, sooner or later you stop paying attention to them. But this does not concern Tiko: the project raised almost $3 million against the stated goal of $100,000.

The question immediately arises: what is it about Tiko that other printers don't? The first thing the creators say is reliability. The body of the Tiko consists of a single piece, not many connected elements. This ensures that there are no problems with the calibration, adjustment and constant repair of the printer. In the rest of the 3D printers, according to the developers, something constantly leaves, disconnects, fails, or at least warps - and you have to spend almost as much time on printing as on developing a printed product. Tiko should not have such problems. All the insides of the printer are hidden under a one-piece housing that isolates the print area and the mechanism itself. The body is strong enough - it can even withstand the weight of a person.

The second key benefit is the price: $179. Complete with a printer for this money, the buyer receives a roll of plastic wire for printing. If you need a printer to print your products and, say, you sell collectible toys or figurines, then the price of the printer can be recouped for a couple of sales. To the question "Why is it so cheap?" the developers answered: because the materials are cheap, the creation of a one-piece body is not expensive and simply because they can do it, and let the competitors bite their elbows.

For direct printing, a mechanism is used that can move as desired during operation. The parallel arm arrangement exhibits exceptional repeatability without the use of precision guides and linear bearings. This means the Tiko is built using consumer grade tolerances and relatively simple parts, rather than the expensive CNC machined components found in other 3D printers. Most 3D printers use an arrangement of belts, pulleys, and idlers. Instead, Tiko's developers have created their own direct drive system, in which the engines are mounted on "wagons" that drive directly along the rails. The nozzle is made of titanium and is unique in its kind. The ventilation system does not interfere with printing and perfectly cools the part. Printing accuracy is not so great - 200 microns, but, according to the assurances of the creators, thanks to the print quality, Tiko is not inferior to printers with an accuracy of up to 50 microns.

    Specifications Tiko
    Accuracy 200 micron
    Materials Nylon, PLA, ABS, HIPS
    Weight 1.7 kg
    Dimensions 390 × 237 × 221 mm
    Interface WiFi
    Maximum temperature 250°C
    Working area diameter 125 mm
    Price $179

You can connect to Tiko via Wi-Fi, the printer even creates its own point specifically for printing. If the connection with the printer breaks, this will not stop printing - the information will already be stored locally on the printer. Well, the last nice feature of Tiko is that this printer is easy to move from place to place, because without taking into account the materials for printing it weighs only 1.7 kg.

As stated at the beginning, the project raised nearly $3 million. Over 16,000 Kickstarter users have ordered Tiko. The delivery of the first printers will be carried out in October, but if you order a printer now, you will definitely not see it before March next year - the order limits for October, November, December, January and February have already been exhausted. At the time of publication of the article, the Kickstarter campaign had just ended.

⇡#Aivvy Q - smart headphones that cache personalized music

One of the most interesting Kickstarter projects for the mass user is headphones that cache music. Even a little more: the headphones analyze what you listen to and cache the music that you will like.

Why is Aivvy Q interesting? They are a player and headphones in one device - however, few people are surprised by this now. But they also allow you to forget that you need to download music from the Internet or transfer from discs to the player. You don't even have to spend hours and days looking for really worthwhile tracks for your collection.

Headphones communicate directly with the cloud. To use them, you do not need a constant connection to the Web - all music is cached in the device's memory during recharging. Music starts playing as soon as you put on your headphones. All tracks will be stored in the cloud at a bit rate of at least 320 kbps, which will allow you to enjoy music in CD-like quality. Batteries should last for 40 hours. This is quite a lot, but not so much that the stock of music could become outdated.

Forced recharge will update your playlist. The headphones also boast support for active noise cancellation.

    Specifications Aivvy Q
    Frequency response 20-20000 Hz
    Materials Plastic, leather, aluminum
Interface Ultra Low Power Wi-Fi 2. 4 GHz, Bluetooth LE
    Memory 32 GB
    Sensitivity 117 dB
Sizes FLAC, mp3, ape, wma, aac, wav
    Dimensions 163 x 137 x 82 mm, 255 grams
    Price $299

Playback is controlled by touching the headphones. You can mark a track as your favourite, scroll through tracks and change channels by switching between certain styles or sheets in your collection. Everything you do affects how your headphones see your taste in music. They marked a track as a favorite - they received a recommendation to listen to a similar one, they skipped a track - they cut off the excess from their future playlist. All the details about the recommendation mechanism are not known, but the system should take into account, among other things, when and where you performed a certain action.

Headphones seem like magic, but let's take a look at the whole system. How long does it take for a development company to get the rights to music to somehow match the level of iTunes and Google Play? And how much money would it take? If the creators opened a campaign to raise funds for the production of headphones, then where will they get the money for the content? Otherwise, users of the service will have to be content with mediocre music. The creators do not disclose any details in this area. The entire system of intelligent music recommendations can only be built on a sufficiently large sample. Not only should the number of users of the system be in the millions, it will also take some time to accumulate enough information to avoid the banal recommendations of AC/DC ↔ Metallica ↔ Slayer, Kino ↔ Grebenshchikov ↔ Time Machine. It took Last.FM many years to give really good recommendations that you don't want to spit on. In questions to the project, the topic of whether the headphones are relevant somewhere other than the USA (the homeland of the creators) was also raised. In response, the developers promised to give recommendations depending on the location of the listener. In general terms, if you are from Russia, you will be recommended music that is relevant for Russia, including our performers.

Overall, the Aivvy Q seems like a raw product, although the concept is great. It is a pity, but many aspects of the operation of the entire system as a whole are not disclosed. It doesn't look like the project will actually get a full life, rather than end up with first deliveries, as is often the case with Kickstarter projects. The price of the headphones is $300 (one and a half 3D printers) - and it will be justified only if the music recommendation service really works as it should. After all, Aivvy Q can be used as regular headphones, but for just headphones with such technical characteristics $ 300 is too high a price. At the time of this writing, the project was finishing a campaign that was successful, having collected more than 180 thousand dollars instead of 125. Delivery of the first headphones is scheduled for October this year.

    ⇡#Meld - creating a smart kitchen

A large number of Kickstarter devices offer not to buy something completely new, but to improve what you already have. This option almost always turns out to be cheaper and suitable for everyone, because not everyone is ready to immediately dive into the world of high technologies - many want to approach this gradually.

Let's say, what would be so technologically advanced in the kitchen? You can put Meld there. Meld is a cooker device. It doesn't matter if it's gas or electric. You install Meld instead of a temperature control knob - and now your mobile phone can control the temperature instead of you. Installation takes only half a minute, and, according to the video, almost everyone can handle it. Without changing anything drastically in the kitchen, without buying new appliances, you get a “smart” stove, which will be controlled by artificial intelligence.

Meld consists of a handle on the stove and a thermometer that is mounted on the pan. It is important to note that at the moment this whole system only works with pots - Meld will not be able to help you fry something, because it is simply not able to monitor the temperature in the pan. Such a limitation sharply reduces the relevance of the invention. The creators emphasize that you can cook the perfect soup or sauce, make stews, french fries (in oil) or caramel. Much attention was also paid to the problem of boiling eggs in a bag. Indeed, this is an intricate process that requires skill or a clear algorithm of actions related to the cooking temperature. But is it really worth buying a separate device for this?

The creators of Meld take the trick: a real chef can cook anything on anything - and the video shows how to cook a perfect pot-rare steak using Meld. The steak is simply brought to the desired state by cooking in a thermal bag, and then only browned in a pan. If you think in this way, then, of course, the possibilities of a “smart” stove are expanding.

    Specifications Meld
    Power 4 + 1 AAA batteries
Application platforms Android, iOS; later, possibly Windows Phone
    Interface Bluetooth 4.0 LE
Materials Handle - protected plastic, thermometer - metal
    Optional Water protection, auto-off
    Dimensions Pen - 62 x 45 mm, thermometer - 300 x 24 mm
    Price 129 dollars

The system is controlled using a smartphone or tablet and a special app. The application, of course, contains a lot of ready-made recipes - all that remains is to choose what to cook, collect the ingredients, put the pan on the fire and fix the thermometer.
